Naomi Campbell slams supermodels

I agree 100%, the last super was Gisele...

If you walk on the street and ask someone who is Daria or Natalia, they do not know... even Karolina they have no clue who she is even with VS...

That kind of recognition I see only with Gisele and the others...

I am watching Fox news one day and O Reiley is talking to a guy and the gay makes a comment with Gisele's name in it...

What other model after her is known outside of the fashion circle?

Google their names on the news tabs and you will see how little Gemma, Daria, Natalia, Carmen and the others are remembered.

Agyness is replacing Kate as the bad girl of England that is why she gets that much press...

Sorry the supers are at another level, stratosphere...

Gisele was the Supermodel of the 90's.

As of right now, the Supermodel of the 00's is still nowhere to be found :(

Oh God, now mediocre models are promoting themselves as supermodels (from nypost):

In "The Hearst Chronicles" in this Sunday's Page Six Magazine, Hearst writes about how her latest campaign for British lingerie line Myla has "spawned a bit of mudslinging . . . about how I'm Paris Hilton." The blond-again model would like to clear one thing up.Don't ever compare New York media heiress Lydia Hearst to Paris Hilton. "Remember: I am a supermodel and have the award to prove it, and she is a celebrity. There's no comparison." -Lydia Hearst

:ninja:

What exactly does it take to be acknowledged as a supermodel nowadays?
Do you have to get into trouble with the law? or beat on someone? or bone some half rate actor?
Is that what being a model is all about?

As if scoring tons of magazine covers, walking every runway and appearing in major campaigns wasn't enough.

It's that idea that everything before is better then now because it was here before.

And i'm sorry for that Naomi comment I made before, it's always love/hate for that woman.

Naomi was already a supermodel when her troubles with the public started! And I bet she is not guilty for any of those charges! They are humans after all and they can loose their temper! They can be under a lot of preasure sometimes and their actions are justified, even if they seem to be bad girls sometimes! What they have achieved in their work can never be taken away from them, no matter how many stupid laws they can break;))lol

I guess it all comes down to what people consider a "supermodel". imo, a model becomes super when people who don´t care for fashion know their name and face and they can work both in comercial and HF. Gisele was the last model to achieve that.
People like to call supermodels to a lot of models but ask a random person on the street if they know them, they probably don´t. But ask them if they know Claudia or Cindy...

Well, there are few super models now BUT I agree that they put supermodel tag for models too easily.
Sasha Pivovarova is most definedly supermodel but girls example Lara Stone are not supermodels yet.

ahaha that's the biggest question of the industry lol can we consider gemma, lily, heather, raquel, freja, lara, daria, irina, mariacarla, natasha, sasha, sessilee, chanel, jourdan, arlenis etc. like supermodels? Or does the status does no longer exist and only remain to be used for 90's girls like naomi, kate, tyra, linda, cindy, claudia etc... ???

Well somehow I want to believe the "top models" of today are on the verge of becoming "supermodels" but not just yet: ok YES I love them and find them indredible and they do the seasons' highest shows and campaigns and covers etc. but do the public really know them??? I'm not sure at all

Supermodels are, in my opinion, celebraties models (Kate, Claudia, Cindy, Naomi, Gisele, Amber, Christy, Linda, Carla) or long lasting models (Carolyn Murphy, Angela Lindvall, Karen Elson, Carmen Kass, Daria, Isabelli Fontana, Liya, etc.)

Top models are the flavor of the months: Toni Garrn, Catherine McNeil, etc.

I do not think that for random people who do not care for fashion and anything in general to know your name is a bug achievement at all!
Achieving a celebrity status means nothing and it is something very funny and meaningless.
People just love to abuse and play with different words and love to call things with names and give generalizations! Which is absurd most of the time.
We all know what a top model is and nobody can invent one, it speaks by the work they do and it is obvious to all of us who the real top models are!

it's not a personality that makes the supermodel it's the work she does in front of the camera and on the runways, naomi for me is the #1 supermodel of all time, #2 christy, #3 kirstin, #4 linda & #5 nadja. i agree with her too the word "supermodel" is used for the likes of miranda kerr, marissa miller, heidi or adriana lima and they amongst a lot more do not and probably never will come close to the supermodel status in their whole careers. it's a sad fact but it's true but it didn't end with gisele, i find mariacarla boscono a better model than gisele has ever been. mariacarla, liya and gisele were the ultimate. poly is the only model right now who has earned the supermodel label but she still has a long way to go. along with sasha, lara, daria, iris etc etc imho

Lara Stone is more of a supermodel, though IMO she isn't though she is my fave model ever, than Sasha is. Lara Stone has a celeb husband, thus people outside of the fashion world have a chance at knowing who she is. Plus, Lara got a cover of Interview, which is pretty much reserved for celebrities exclusively. As far as I know, MCB is the only other model to get an Interview cover. Lara has done a bit more commercial work as well, with H&M, she was in the VS fashion show. Sasha got H&M but it wasn't as publicized as Lara Stone's was, Sasha was never in a commercial. Lara had print and a commercial for H&M. But neither are supermodels. Lara has a shot at becoming one, though.

The last one was probably Liya, considering she has her own charity, has been on Time's 100 most influential people list, etc.

Old topic but still relevant.

I agree with Naomi. Supermodels barley exist nowadays. Supermodels are meant to be larger than life, they're meant to be beyond just modelling, they're an giant beauty powerhouse; models who are so super they practically destory anyone self-esteem. Lol I know that sounds terrible but it's true. That's what I think of when someone says Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Gisele Bundchen.
The so-called "supermodels" of today are ordinary girls. Their personalities are too ordinary, there's nothing other-worldly about them. Sure they're hot, cute, sexy etc but personality wise, they're just ordinary girls.....ahem...Lily Cole.
Naomi, Linda, Gisele, Eva Herzigova, Claudia, Christy, Kate, Stephanie, Elle...those were women were like hurricanes of personality and beautiful presence...that's why they're famous.

Lara is definitely more supermodel that a lot of "supermodels" these days. She's quite badas$ and I mean she practically looks like a walking orgasm. She has giant t*ts and she always just looks really.....raunchy lol.

Sasha....she's a fantastic model.

Wrong. It's both. Why is Cindy famous and not Doutzen? Because Cindy had a VERY vibrant personality. She had, and still has, a very exhubernat and colourful attitude. Sure, Doutzen is pretty and she walks sexy for VS but she's not exactly anything brand new. She's just an ordinary girl with very extraordinary looks.

Posing in front of the camera makes you a model, but personality makes you a supermodel.

I totally agree with the supermodel term getting slapped on anyone: Alessandra,Raquel,Chanel, ET ALL are not supermodels!

Nobody can be a supermodel by the standards set by 90`s supers, I´ve come to this conclusion. When I think the word supermodel, I see Naomi, Cindy and Linda. Whenever a model of this generation is called supermodel, I still see Naomi, Cindy or Linda. So, I guess the whole word is reserved for certain group, so it is difficult to associate other models for it, no matter what they have done in their career.

Poly, Pivovarova and Stone definitely are on the top, by professional achievements the may reach the point of supes, but still.. once I hear Supermodel, I expect to see Naomi & co. It is almost like calling Coldplay as the new Beatles. Yeees.... but no.
