"UPS is proud to support this talented group of new designers at such an important industry event," said David Abney, president, UPS International. "We're helping them focus on what they do best - designing, showing and selling their collections, while UPS can ensure their business is prepared behind the scenes."

Carefully chosen by an industry committee from Vogue, 7th on Sixth, the CFDA, Parsons and Fashion Group International, these designers will present their Spring 2006 collections in the "UPS Hub," a fourth venue in the famed Bryant Park tents. As part of UPS's commitment to supporting new talent in the fashion industry, UPS has underwritten the cost of constructing and renting the venue.

The 10 presenting designers are:

Abaete: Designer Laura Poretzky presents her ready-to-wear collection with a South American flair.

Ashish N Soni: Well known in India, Ashish N Soni will present his first collection in the United States of black and white, Indian-inspired menswear and womenswear.

Doo.Ri: Winner of the 1995 Parson's Designer of the Year award, Doo Ri Chung presents a collection using minimalist design and simple, elegant materials.

Gary Graham: A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Gary Graham will present romantic, deconstructive menswear and womenswear using innovative textiles for modern, wearable collections.

Kit Willow: Hailing from Australia, Kit Willow is known for her signature, tailored corsets, jackets and dresses detailed with hand-worked metal and glass appliques.

Mary Ping: A New York native, Mary Ping draws from her training in fine art and sculpture to create a collection for women with an artistic and elegant sensibility.

Matthew Earnest: New York newcomer Matthew Earnest designs a balanced collection of light and fresh women's and menswear.

Project Alabama: Drawing from more than 150 artisans, Alabama-based designer Natalie Chanin presents a unique and individual collection of womenswear.

Sandoval: Academy of Art University graduate Michael Carbaugh uses his eye for textile design to put new twists on classic design.

Tomer: Menswear designer Tomer Gendler's collections intend to change the direction of men's fashion.

"This is a fantastic roster of talented designers and we couldn't be more pleased to help each of them get the exposure that showing during Olympus Fashion Week can provide," said Fern Mallis, Executive Director of 7th on Sixth and Vice-President of IMG. "While we continue to present collections of the best known names in America, the buzz and interest is always about who's next and new, and with an inspired partner like UPS, we are able to deliver this as well!"

The UPS Hub also will feature "Inside Fashion's Future," an event where New York fashion design students will gather at the UPS Hub for an interactive panel discussion with the designers to reveal insights about the craft and business of fashion. This "real-world" discussion will be moderated by Sass Brown, associate professor in Fashion Design at FIT.

The UPS Hub can accommodate approximately 300 guests, seated and standing, and includes all of the state-of-the-art professional services and amenities offered in all of the 7th on Sixth venues. In addition, each of these emerging designers will receive benefits including a fully equipped backstage area, an expert design team for lighting, sound, stage and production, inclusion on signage, on the official website, acknowledgement in the Olympus Fashion Week agenda, and in the registered press and industry list.

A UPS Moment

A UPS Moment:
Abaeté's Laura Poretzky

Thursday, August 25, 2005

Abaeté's Laura Poretzsky

(NEW YORK) Thanks to UPS Delivers Fashion’s Future, 10 young designers are about to debut at Olympus Fashion Week. They’re ready to face the style-obsessed masses—so shouldn’t you know their faces? The Daily is bringing you a series of UPS profiles to show you the best of what’s next.

First up, Laura Poretzky and her ready-to-wear line Abaeté, named after her family’s ancient Portuguese crest. In between fittings for her September 14 show, the Ralph Lauren refugee and RISD graduate dishes to on her show and latest obsession: The UPS uniform.

Did you always know your line’s name would be Abaeté?
“No, actually I just recently found out that my mother’s maiden name and title is Abaeté! She called me out of the blue and said, ‘You know, our family name has a title and crest,’ and I thought that was really suitable for a fashion company and beautiful.”

You beat about 300 designers for a UPS sponsorship—do you remember when you found out?
“I stayed at the office late. I was stressing about where I was going to show and how to show and where to get the money. Everything seemed terrible and I was completely upset and then Fern Mallis called me. I was so ecstatic; I couldn’t believe it. I called my partners screaming.”

Are you friends with any of the other UPS designers?
“I just met Matthew Earnest and he’s really nice and great.”

Can you tell us about your upcoming collection?
“Everything is inspired by an old Brazilian movie from the ‘50s called Black Orpheus and it’s very elegant, black , easy, and we’re accentuating everything around the waist—loose linen blouses and form fitting dresses, it’s very accentuated there.”

There's a rumor you’re obsessed with re-designing the UPS uniform…
“I’ve been interviewing the UPS people whenever they come in to see how their uniform fits—I’m obsessed! I’d make it more comfortable and more modern.* But brown is the color of dependability so I’d keep the brown.”

Is there anyone you really want at your show?
“ANNA!”

Anna Wintour?
“Yes, that would be nice.”

What if she can’t make it?* Is Bee okay?
“Bee would be nice too...or Carine."

6:00 pm CLOAK - Place to be announced
Going to be good.

See you there. ;D

I had a daydream that there was a Helmut Lang esque fashion revolt and all the "real" NYC designers staged their own fashion week and left all the mass market and celebrity lines to themselves. How sweet would that be?

^too sweet, my dear!! but i wish it was true.....all these celeb lines are really making me sick.

An Amorous UPS Moment:
Gary Graham shows some love for the uniform

Friday, August 26, 2005

(NEW YORK) UPS obviously is obsessing about emerging designer Gary Graham—they selected him as one of just 10 new talents to debut at UPS Delivers Fashion Future in the Tents. Now Graham is returning the compliment.

Are you ready for Olympus Fashion Week?
“I’m very excited!”

Do you remember when you learned you were a UPS designer?
“You know, it was an ordinary busy day and I think I had some food in my mouth...then Fern Mallis called. It was great! It was at a moment when we were trying to decide if we were going to do a show or not, and now we don’t have to decide. It’s a pretty big financial decision and that made it a lot easier.”

Can you tell us about your latest collection?
“It’s a continuation of last season. It’s the formative years of one of the women, but I don’t know which one yet. It’s this young woman and this transition in her life happens due to her mother.”

Maybe this would be a good time to explain to our readers that you design clothing for imaginary characters…
“I kind of make up women. It’s a lot of experiences of lots of different girls put together in one. But spring is always about the formative years for me.”

Are you still in your formative years?
“Absolutely! I’m still going through my formative years—every day the nervousness, learning, the anxiety and the love.”

What’s the best part of your design process?
“My favorite part isn’t the conception, it’s like two-thirds through when you’re putting it out there and you’re doing the research and it all starts coming together, that’s my favorite part. The tangible aspects, when the fabrics come in and you get to work with them and all that stuff.”

What’s the worst part?
“I think the most labor intensive part is shipping, but UPS makes it better, absolutely.”

Lauren Proetzky at Abaeté was talking about redesigning the UPS uniform.
"I always support change but I think with major companies like UPS, unless the fabric is really hot or something, I really like the uniform the way it is.”

L.A.M.B., which stands for Love, Angel, Music, Baby, makes its debut on the runway Sept. 16, the finale of eight days of fashion previews for spring 2006. It's the same slot that Jennifer Lopez's Sweetface collection filled last season.

Stefani says she's not jumping on the celebrity fashion designer bandwagon for a quick ride. (Others planning collections in the coming months are Beyonce, Jessica Simpson and possibly even Justin Timberlake. Granddaddy Diddy launched his Sean John line in 1998 and won a Council of Fashion Designers of America award last year.)

What she hopes sets her apart from the crowd is her attention to detail. "L.A.M.B. is a fashion line that — fingers crossed — will just get more and more sophisticated. What's different than what's out there is the way I put things together. And, if you look inside the pants, you'll find secret details in there."

Stefani says she's learning to navigate the bumps of the industry, including production delays and expensive fabrics, and that she's ready for some criticism — the constructive kind, she hopes — from fashion editors and retail buyers after her big show. She's getting help from designer Zaldy and creative consultant Andrea Lieberman.

"I don't expect to fit in right away but I do sense that the fashion world is rooting for me, too. I'm not being treated like a celebrity wannabe fashion designer. But even if I was, it doesn't really matter because I'm doing this for me ... but it does feel really good when you have a hit," Stefani says during a recent interview.

^Gwen IS a celebrity wannabe designer, whether she likes this term or not.......

Celebrity Designers...

Of all the celeb clothing I've seen, Gwen's is the nicest line, althiugh she doest really design hers...but DVF doesnt design her line either...The Karl Rubinstein (?) guy from Bloomingdales was interviewd last season i think after the sweetface show and talked a bit about what Bloomie's considers when evaluating wihci celeb lines to pick up...He said he was really excited about Beyonce's line bc B's mom was trained by her grandma who was a "seamstress from the south". That whole house of dereon name is ridiculous, all those fake accents in the names are ridiculuous, but at least I hope it'll be nice. Even if it sucks it'll probably make tons of cash anyway.

I'm reallly exited about Roland Mouret. His last collection was just too good for words.---Excited about Behnaz too

Doo Gooder
A moment with Ms. Ri

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

(NEW YORK) Designer Doo Ri is getting lots of attention. She’s got her first Olympus Fashion Week show in the UPS Hub next Sunday, and she’s getting her first Daily interview right now:

You seem a little calmer than some of the other designers. Were you already preparing to show during Fashion Week?
“Yes, we were already preparing to put together something spectacular for Fashion Week. You know, I was pulling together sketches, mood boards, blah blah blah, and then UPS called me and said I was already chosen! I was like, ‘Wow, great!’”

So what “something spectacular” were you putting together?
“It’s all jersey— the material, not the state. I’m bringing in some wovens, cottons and linens and sheers, chiffon— the big thing for me is to work the chiffon into a really crisp abstract. I want to go against the nature of what chiffon is, which is this gossamer, flighty, loose and light—I’m making it stiff and hard and creating structure. It offsets the jersey.”

Where did you get that idea? Sounds a little Tim Burton…
“I don’t look at anything. I work on the form and one idea leads to another leads to another.”

Is there a designer you’re dying to have at your show?
“I’m scared to invite anyone—I’m afraid they won’t like it! But okay, if one person could come and like it, it would definitely be Rei Kawakubo.”

Is there a designer whose show you’d like to crash?
“Jeffrey Chow. I love what he does. I think it’s very feminine and I thought last season was very beautiful.”
