^ I love her hair and the top she's wearing. I'm not accustomed to seeing her wearing vertical stripes; it flatters her figure so well.

THEY say that football is the beautiful game – and when Euro 2008 kicks off today it will certainly have some of the most stunning spectators.

While football's European championship will have to do without the renowned WAGs (wives and girlfriends) of England's stars – or indeed those from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, who also failed to qualify – the tournament in Austria and Switzerland looks certain to provide supporters with as much glamour as it will goals.

TD
DOMINIC UTTON reports on the Euro-WAGs who have scored with some of the continent's biggest football stars and who are sure to provide a distraction to whatever is happening on the pitch...

NEREIDA GALLARDO The Spanish girlfriend of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nereida, 24, is said to be a factor in the player's reported desire to move to Real Madrid next season.

She gave up a job in a state-run nursing home to concentrate on her modelling career.

ANINE BING Sweden midfield star Anders Svensson is the envy of motorists in Birmingham for having Anine, 25, as his girlfriend. The model was featured on a billboard for Ellesse sportswear which was taken down because councillors considered it was too distracting for drivers.

HELENA SEGER Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic's other half Helena, 28, stands out for her CV, which includes stints as account manager at Swatch Group Nordic, marketing manager for airline FlyMe and a position on the board of the biggest publicity company in Scandinavia.

ALENA SEREDOVA Girlfriend of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, Alena, 30, has also represented her country – she was the Miss World contestant for the Czech Republic in 1998. The couple celebrated the birth of their first son last December.

SYLVIE VAN DER VAART The TV presenter and the midfield star are known as the "Dutch Posh and Becks". Their marriage was even broadcast live on TV there. Sylvie, 30, revealed that Rafael refuses to sleep in the same bed as her.

"It's just as well, " she says. "His legs are heavy. If I get under them I can't get out."

EVA GONZALEZ The former Miss Spain met Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas in 2006 and has been with him ever since. She is best known as the presenter of a leading reality TV show. Pictures of the couple "showing intense displays of affection" on the beach in Mexico were a sensation when published recently.

JANA KOCUROVA Jana, 27, will have to watch games which don't involve her Arsenal and Czech star husband Tomas Rosicky – an injury rules him out. The former Miss Czech Republic last year had to endure stories that Tomas and his international team-mates had thrown a party which included some call girls after one particular match.

SARAH BRANDNER The 19-year-old model is dating Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger and is reported to be his fifth girlfriend in less than two years, even though he's no Beckham in the looks department.

Perhaps he should be careful – Sarah's ex is former world heavyweight boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko.

NOEMIE LENOIR The wife of Chelsea and France player Claude Makelele, Noémie, 28, is a successful model and actress, best known for starring in those Marks & Spencer's ads. They met in 2004 and remain together, despite the fact that Makalele has cheated on her – causing Noémie to tell friends:

"He has disgraced himself, his family and Chelsea football club." The boy's a fool.

ENGLAND won the World Cup in 2006. No, not the football World Cup, let's not be silly now. England's footballers couldn't win a raffle in 2006. But the nation did take home the WAGs' World Cup.

The Wives And Girlfriends of England's flops topped the world's WAGs. They got four times more media coverage than any other nation, according to Carma, an international media analysis company.

TD
The English WAGs boasted good engines, real bar-to- bar players and were happy to attack new party territory before dropping back to help out a teammate still vomiting at a previous pub.

Always the first names on any (nightclub) manager's line-up, Cheryl Tweedy (Ashley Cole's singing missus), Carly Zucker (Joe Cole), Coleen McLoughlin (Wayne Rooney) and skipper Victoria Beckham (LA circus performer) were the greatest team of 2006.

No other nation could dribble in a bar like these girls.

Often found singing 'We Shall Not Be Moved', they lived up to the chant by staying in some German bars longer than their partners stayed in the actual tournament.

When they returned to England, some of the national heroes presented a TV show called WAGs Boutique, offering life-affirming tips on how to look orange throughout an English winter and demonstrating the priceless value of a push-up bra.

Some believe the push-up bra is a matter of life and death. WAGs assure us it is more important than that.

For a couple of years now, Euro 2008 organisers in Switzerland and Austria were laying the groundwork for England's WAGs by allocating more bar-top dancing space, stocking up on Spice Girls CDs and learning elementary Scouse.

But, with England failing to qualify for the tournament, the hosts have been left with mostly attractive, elegant, refined women who barely qualify for WAG status.

Helena Svedin, for example, is a stunning Swedish model, the face of H&M and the wife of Luis Figo, who should pop by to cheer on his old Portugal teammates.

But Svedin has never been known to jump on a bar and sing: 'There's only one Gary Neville.'

And Euro 2008 will be a poorer tournament for it.

Nevertheless, there will be a number of WAG wannabes cheering on their men from their executive boxes in the coming weeks.

Sylvie van der Vaart, wife of Dutch midfielder Rafael, is a beautiful actress who reportedly married Rafael live on Dutch TV back in 2005.

Cynics in Holland have suggested that was the last time Rafael scored on TV.

Gianluigi Buffon, on the other hand, clearly fancies himself as an Italian George Best.

The goalkeeper lives with Alena ?eredov?, who was once Miss Czech Republic runner-up and her country's representative at Miss World 1998.

For a 'keeper far too fond of punching crosses, Seredova is easily the best catch of Buffon's career (and the worst pun in this column).

Honourable mentions should also go to Marta Cecchetto (with Italy's Luca Toni), glamour model Anine Bing (frequently linked to Sweden's Anders Svensson), Spanish beauty Eva Gonz?lez (Spain's Iker Casillas) and the bloggers' favourite WAG, Noemie Lenoir (France's Claude Makelele).

Chelsea's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich will drop in on most matches, eager to buy up most of Europe's cream before Fifa's 6+5 foreign player ruling becomes reality.

He may be accompanied by wealthy Russian socialite Daria Zhukova.

When Abramovich grows tired of Zhukova, she will be told to leave by Peter Kenyon.

But the girlfriend with undoubtedly the greatest WAG potential is 24-year-old Spanish model Nereida Gallardo.

Cristiano Ronaldo's latest flame attended a Manchester United match recently sporting earrings with R7 spelt out in diamonds. How's that for branding?

Footballers love fancy cars with personalised number plates, more bling than P. Diddy and a model girlfriend. Gallardo's got the lot.

She's 'branded' like a Beckham. Posh would be so proud.

SIZZLING Noémie Lenoir and Myleene Klass have helped Marks & Spencer to make £1billion profit.

TD
A sterling effort by the sexy models on the advertising front means the firm's biggest annual profit for a decade.

Noémie, 28, and Myleene, 30, have pulled in the M&S shoppers by starring alongside the likes of Twiggy, 58, Lizzie Jagger, 24, Erin O'Connor, 30, and Laura Bailey, 35.

But in bad news for the firm, City experts predict bonuses for the 75,000 staff will only be a fraction of last year's £91million payout, as shoppers are hit by the credit crunch.

Chief executive Sir Stuart Rose, 59, has also missed out on a bonus of up to £3m, according to pundits.

Pre-tax profits were up 4% to just over £1bn, only the second time in the company's history it has hit the magic figure.

But M&S suffered a disappointing Christmas, and like-for-like sales fell 1.7% in the last three months of the financial year.

Shares have also fallen to almost half their value.

Sir Stuart, who is on a salary of £1.13m, said: "We did not meet the profit target and we did not deserve the bonus.

"At the end of the day, if you don't earn it you don't get it." A source said: "There's no doubt these girls helped the firm's profits.

"Women snapped up the clothes because they wanted to look as good as these models.

"Even though it's not as much as managers hoped, it is not to be sniffed at." M&S, which spent around £1bn modernising stores last year, is also reviewing its food business. It may decide to sell non-M&S-brand products for the first time.

THE STAR PLAYERS

TD
Sylvie van der Vaart,

wife of Rafael van der Vaart (Netherlands)

This Dutch VJ and her superstar midfielder hubby would surely be Holland's answer to Posh and Becks, had Posh taken the career path of Donna Air, and had Becks been blessed with what is known in the game as "Phil Neville jaw". Rafael's career path has been not dissimilar too, as he was stripped of the captaincy of Ajax Amsterdam in 2004 by a no-nonsense coach who seemed to resent his frequent appearances at parties with Sylvie. That didn't stop the couple marrying in a lavish ceremony broadcast live on Dutch TV in 2005. Despite his move to unglamorous Hamburg, they now pose for 24-page photoshoots, then claim to be "very private people". A Google image search will reveal them indulging in pillow fights, enjoying a woodland walk, and cuddling up in their sumptuous home. Yet they are national treasures, to the point where Dutch parliament discussed what should be done to tackle crude terrace chants aimed at Sylvie. What's the Dutch for "sticks and stones.
. ."?

Alena Seredova,

girlfriend of Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)

Ever since George Best first breathed alcohol-scented sweet nothings into Miss World's ear, footballers and beauty queens have naturally gravitated towards each other. The 1998 winner of Miss Czech Republic, who holds the outsized hand of Italy's goalkeeper, also ticks another essential box for Euro WAGs in that she has made regular appearances on Italian television, invariably on game shows or "comedy" shows that make Benny Hill look like Jerry Seinfeld. To clinch the treble, she also models. During the 2006 World Cup, she took part in a football-themed fashion show for underwear manufacturer Triumph, sporting a bra with cups shaped like footballs bulging in

a goal net.

Nereida Gallardo, girlfriend of Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

The girlfriend of Manchester United's Madeiran wonderkid may be from humble stock, working part time in a nursing home (and modelling topless the rest of the time, as the tabloids recently felt duty bound to reveal along with full pictorial evidence) but Ronnie clearly values her enough to buy her a pounds 25,000 pair of earings in the shape of the legend R7 (in celebration of his initial and shirt number). Earlier this season, the Sun reported an Old Trafford onlooker making the convincing-sounding statement: "Her earrings sparkled under the floodlights and we all instantly realised they were dedicated to Ronaldo." Nereida (which, as you surely know, means water nymph) met Ronaldo in a nightclub (where else?) in Mallorca in January, and since then they are said to have been "inseparable". Apart from when he's on the pitch of course, that might hinder his famous step-overs slightly.

THE BAD GIRLS

Nuria Bermudez, girlfriend of Dani

Guiza (Spain)

A legend among WAGs.

A passionate Real Madrid

fan, Nuria once claimed to "know" the whole squad, and no one took that to mean she merely played the odd game of Scrabulous with them on Facebook. It was she who vowed, "I will bed David Beckham," on his arrival in the Spanish capital, and she even hid behind a bush on one occasion so she could spring up beside him and sell the pre-arranged photographs to the gossip magazines. However, more recently she seems to have put her talents to more constructive use, as a Uefa-licensed football agent. One of her clients, Daniel Gonzalez Guiza, became her lover; she helped broker a euros 5m move to Real Mallorca, and this previously erratic, underachieving striker became one of the Primera Liga's top scorers, something his manager put down to his settled domestic life. Back of the net!

Belen Rodriguez, girlfriend of Marco Borriello (Italy)

After her fiance, Genoa forward Marco Borriello, failed a drugs test in December 2006, she bravely sprung to his defence, and thenceforth into the gossip pages. His failed test, she claimed, was the result of him applying ointment to his privates for an STD which he had caught from her, which happened to contain the banned substance cortisone. "I advised him to use the ointment but forgot it contained cortisone. Our sex session proved fatal," she explained. We've all been there.

THE MODEL PROFESSIONALS

Noemie Lenoir, wife

of Claude Makelele (France)

Mrs Makelele is one WAG who should be a familiar face to anyone who has looked at the 30 per cent of UK billboard ads which don't feature Myleene bloody Klass. Noemie is one of the models photographed frolicking around in her underwear with Laura Bailey, Twiggy and Erin O'Connor. Oh and actually Myleene's in that one as well. Why? She is also keen to break into acting, and has had small parts in a couple of Hollywood films, including the critically acclaimed, impressionistic arthouse masterpiece Rush Hour 3.

Oksana Andersson,

fiance of Christian Wilhelmsson (Sweden)

Some would have you believe that WAGs have no talent of their own. Yet as Oksana points out on her website, she used to be a dancer with "international famous pop group Sunblock" who specialise in Bundes-house remixes of 1980s cheese such the Baywatch theme I'll Be Ready. After that hit, we are told, "her career increased in every direction". Thankfully, it's heading away from the UK charts - Sunblock's last effort only got to No 16 *

Real Euro stars: continental WAGs who more than make up for the absence of our English roses... except for die fraulein

By Ashley Gray Last updated at 6:53 PM on 02nd June 2008
Still don't know who to support at Euro 2008?

The horde of continental WAGs about to hit Austria and Switzerland might just help make your mind up.

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of England's failure to reach the Finals was the denial of Posh, Coleen, Cheryl, Abi Clancy, Alex Curran, Elen Rives and Melanie Slade their moment in the sun.

No wonder Ashley Cole's much better half is looking down at the moment. What else is she going to do this summer? Wistfully reminisce of happier times in Baden Baden?

But fear not. In the name of journalism, Sportsmail presents its Alpine WAGs to watch...
If one nation takes the team game as seriously as England, it's Germany.

The hugely talented Bastian Schweinsteiger has an equally talented girlfriend, Sarah Brandner.

But although the Germans are one to follow for sheer weight of numbers, there are some weaknesses in the squad.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's squeeze: Sarah Brandner

The fitness level isn't quite as high as it could be. Nicola Valentina - Philipp Lahm's squeeze - can look plain scary, but then he does dress up in lederhosen to take her to Oktoberfest. What does he expect?

Departing Arsenal stopper Jens Lehmann hasn't done bad for himself for a middle-aged butter fingers. At least he's held on to wife Conny.

Others to look out for are Lena Borowski (wife of Tim Borowski), Sylwia Klose (Miroslav Klose), Petra Frings (Thorsten Frings) and Simone Lambe (Michael Ballack).
Italy are similarly taking a large squad, with a little more flair.

Fighting to be centre of attention are Alena Seredova (Gialuigi Buffon's WAG) and Belen Rodriguez, who is far more interesting than some guy called Marco Borriello.

Sonia Amoruso (Alessandro Del Piero) and Marta Cecchetto (Luca Toni) more than make up the numbers.

Manchester United, and Carlos Queiroz in particular, might be a little worried to see Spanish model Nereida Gallardo whispering in Cristiano Ronaldo's ear inside the Portugal camp. But she's never been on record disputing Christopher Columbus' nationality.

Nereida's nation have Nuria Bermudez - perhaps the best-looking football agent in the world. Certainly the perkiest. And currently stepping out with Spain striker Daniel Guiza.

Also, keep an eye on Eva Gonzalez, Iker Casillas's girl.

Holland have always been known for their attractive style, capably demonstrated by Sylvie van der Vaart. The wife of Hamburg's Rafael - a Chelsea target - was recently voted the Queen of the Bundesliga WAGs.

In marrying Bernadien, Arjen Robben hasn't done bad either, for a balding diver.
Sweden are true to form, even if those Scandinavians are a bit nutty.

Christian Wilhelmsson's model girlfriend is a self-confessed sunflower-seed addict. But you'd let her off.

Also look out for Anine Bing - former Southampton midfielder Anders Svensson's WAG - and the top-heavy Helena Seger (Zlatan Ibrahimovic).

Franck Ribery's wife Wahiba Belhami is worth a look, too. Holders Greece again look strong, with Gogo Mastrokosta leading the attack, even if her man Traianos Dellas is a centre back.

The joint hosts threaten to be a disappointment in more ways than one. Anja Ivanschitz, wife of midfielder Andreas, is about as good as it gets for Austria.

The highlight for Switzerland (admittedly a pretty good highlight) is Elena Bonzanni, who is going out with Lazio winger Valon Behrami.

Leading the eastern invasion, via Glasgow, is Poland's Katarzyna Boruc, wife of Poland and Celtic stopper Artur.

Hedvika Koller scrubs up better than her scary husband, giant Czech Republic striker Jan.

Anica Kovac, a Miss World runner-up, will be cheering on her husband, Croatia defender Robert, from the stands. Like the team, the Russians are a bit of an unknown quantity, though winger Yuri Zhirkov did marry the rarely photographed Inna in February. Dark horses Romania reveal a couple of hidden gems (or should that be four?) in Cristian Chivu's WAG Adelina Elisei and Consuelo Matos, the Latin American beauty who caught the eye of former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu.

Which leaves the Turks, who don't seem to have quite caught on to this WAG lark yet.

Still, Filiz Heilmann did come second for the country in the Miss Euro 2008 pageant last week. Could be an omen.

WAGs we'll miss... Apart from England's missing troupe, Austria and Switzerland will also be ruing the absence of some Continental heavyweights.

Injury rules Tomas Rosicky out of the Czech Republic squad and Jana Kocurova out of the boutiques. Raul's demise with Spain means no more Mamen Sanz sporting a bikini and Figo's retirement from the Portugal side results in the lovely Helen Svedin staying at home. Sad times, indeed.

This is Extra Time:

Our pick: Noemie Lenoir. Sure she's got hella bad judgment but the girl's so fine that even straight chicks can dig it. And she's doing a lesser baller, so we can deal.

Mirror. CO. UK

This is not just any WAG, this is a Marks and Spencers WAG. Mrs Makelele is one of the faces of M&S, appearing in ads alongside Twiggy and Erin O'Connor. Less a watercarrier like her husband, Noemie is more of a striker.
