Marks & Spencer, the high street retailer, is hitting the tracks in its latest television advertising campaign promoting its autumn/winter collection that launches tonight.

In the latest campaign, developed by RKCR/Y&R, M&S has once again called on Twiggy, Laura Bailey, Erin O’Connor, Moemie Lenoir and Myleene Klass in an ad that features the quintet boarding the Orient Express train for Venice.

The Orient Express becomes a travelling catwalk as the women walk down the corridor showcasing M&S’s latest lingerie and accessories.

The opulent décor of the rooms on the Orient Express have been chosen to reflect the satin, velvet and rich wools featured in the collection.

‘Look-a-There, Ain’t She Pretty’ by The Charioteers provides the soundtrack to the ad, which ends with a shot of the group on a boat in one of the Venice canals.

The TV ad will be supported by a poster and print campaign.

M&S executive director of marketing Steve Sharp said: “The backdrop of both the Orient Express and the beautiful city of Venice has added a whole new dimension to the campaign, which oozes chic, timeless style and luxury and is a perfect way to showcase our amazing Autumn and Winter collections.”

In May M&S posted a 28.5 per cent rise in annual pre-tax profit to £965.2 million and attributed the rise to its aggressive advertising campaigns featuring 1960s model Twiggy, singers Myleene Klaas and Brian Ferry, which has seen M&S’s clothing market share jump 11.1 per cent.

M&S whistles up Banderas as Bogart

By Chris Hastings, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 12:17am BST 02/09/2007

It is one of the most memorable scenes in cinema history. A 19-year-old and still unknown Lauren Bacall utters an immortal line and wins her real-life future husband Humphrey Bogart:

Antonio Banderas will star in the M&S advertising campaign

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and… blow."

Now, more than 60 years later, the legendary scene from the 1944 film To Have and Have Not is to take centre stage again - but as part of the new Marks & Spencer Christmas advertising campaign for television.

The commercial features a series of scenes that pay tribute to films from Hollywood's golden era of the Forties and Fifties.

Antonio Banderas, the star of Evita, Zorro and two Shrek films, will play the male role in each shot, including Bogart. The female leads will be portrayed by M&S regulars Twiggy, Laura Bailey, Erin O'Connor, Noémie Lenoir and Lizzie Jagger.

The closely guarded multi-million pound production will also pay homage to the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which starred Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. It will feature the scene when Russell's character disrupts a courtroom when she disguises herself as the woman played by Monroe and performs a routine in the middle of a trial.

The M&S campaigns have been instrumental in reversing the fortunes of the store, which had fallen out of favour with shoppers. The ads have raised the profile of all involved, in particular Twiggy and Dame Shirley Bassey, who appeared in the last Christmas advert. But Banderas, who is due to star in the Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots and Sin City 2, is the campaign's biggest draw so far, and his participation is likely to generate international attention.

A source within the company said: "Everyone is delighted that Antonio has got involved. It's hard to think of something more fitting for Christmas than Hollywood glamour and glitz."

The line quoted by Bacall in To Have and Have Not has been rated the 34th most memorable line in American cinema history. The song, Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, sung by Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, has been celebrated by stars as diverse as Madonna, Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman. It is believed that it could be reprised in the campaign.

The Sunday Telegraph understands the commercials will begin appearing at the end of November.

A spokesman for Marks & Spencer last night declined to be drawn on the campaign. She said that talk of the Hollywood star's participation was speculation and that the finer details were still being decided on.

ears bald head scandal some how crept it's way into this movie. The gender stereotype exposed in this film, was that in order for a woman to be a real woman, she cannot be bald. After all, if a woman is bald, there is something seriously wrong with her. Everyone knows that if a woman is bald her entire gender is questionable (insert satire).
Noémie Lenoirrole's role in Rush Hour 3 was that of a martyr. From the time she was born until she became an adult her purpose in life was to serve a male dominated secret society. She was brainwashed into believing that her life is less valuable than exposing the names of certain high status men. Like in the movie 300, as in many other movies with fictional historical reenactments, there will typically be a woman (or women) who's sole purpose is to be sacrificed in order to preserve a patriarchal power structure.
Before Genevieve briefly became a man there were a few powerful moments for several female characters. She appeared to be a damsel in distress, but Soo Yung (Jingchu Zhang) quickly proved that she could kick some serious butt (at the end of the movie she went back to a damsel in distress). The female arch nemesis otherwise known as the "Dragon Lady" played by Youki Kudoh was rarely exposed in any disempowering situation. Writers Jeff Nathanson and Ross LaManna portrayed her as a strong independent female character. This did not spare her from being physically objectified. In fact, with the exception of Soo Yung, all of the women in Rush Hour 3 were physically and sexually objectified. It is possible that it would have been too socially unacceptable (taboo) for the writers to have portrayed Soo Yung to as sexually available. Carter and Lee (Jackie Chan) mentioned in the movie that the last time they had seen her was when she was a child. Carter even makes a remark about Soo Yung noting how she had grown up into a full figured woman. The expression on Carter's face read "awkward" since he knew he could not view Yung as sexually available. The relationship between Soo Yung and Carter was paternalistic.

How could this film be feminist friendly and still maintain it’s pop appeal?
1. Do not make camera shots that focus more on a woman's body (i.e., physical objectification) than on the words she speaks in the movie. Writers should write more memorable quotes for female actors.
2. Stop writing so many action / comedy movie like Rush Hour 3 into "Damsel in Distress" movies. The whole "Damsel in Distress" thing gets old real fast, and shows women in a powerless position.
3. Write more independent and powerful characters like the "Dragon Lady" who do not cater to a patriarchal agenda.

Key pieces Favours the North American denim brands 1921 and 7 For All Mankind, plus anything by Dolce & Gabbana. “It’s not too fussy and showy,” he says. “Not like Versace.”
