NY Vs. LA style

LA is all about "I don't care" look, Major layers - LA girls would like to wear something that is from Stella M. And its all about the color. I think Joan from Girlfriends is perfect LA girl look. LA wants bags to make the statement

Tacky: Big t*ts, bimbo, heiress, "words" on shirts

NYC - from what I see at there. They are similar but do care what they look - lot of layers - hats are so popular during winters. It's about looking urban, sophisticated and they need to make statement. They might wear something from Chloe. NY would like the coat/shoes to make the statement.

Tacky: North face coats, North face everything , and oversize fur coat!!!!

Just putting my two cents

Yeah from what i have experienced in LA there aren't really a lot of fake t*ts flopping down the streets. (which is is a hillarious generalization and a comical mental image as well). I have noticed is that LA is about 3 distinct styles: Hipster chic via American apparel featuring super skinnys, lots of cheezy color blocking, and 70's machismo; Wannabe London streetsters with loads of gross neon, house of holland, and Jeremy Scott (with whom I am ashamed to share the same first name); and some kind of macabre obsessed refugee thanks to the styles of Mary-Kate and Maxfield.

What I have seen about NY is that everyone has great shoes, easy chic ensembles, and it looks like little or no effort was put into their simply amazing outfits. However that could just be the work of The Sartorialist only photographing the stylish folk.

i think its all due to the weather differences between the two cities lol.
LA is more about light layering and i guess a more relaxed or "breezy" style.
NY is more boots and coats.
yea i dont think i explained what i meant very well but anyway...

Exactly, and I have a feeling most people saying that haven't even visited for themselves. Take one visit to LA and you'll immediately change your mind, I guarantee it. What you see in pictures isn't necessarily true for the entire city.

It's like that rumor saying people from Seattle drink coffee and listen to grunge music for a living. Wait, that's partially true.

Also, I'm noticing a strong New York bias. Do we have a lot of members from there or something?

Basically what everyone is saying is true. New York is more sophisticated and dressier while LA is casual and laid-back. That's not to say that you can't find people with LA style in New York and people with New York style in LA.
As for the sartorialist...He's on the streets looking for people with great style. It's not like he's taking pictures of everyone, and everyone is looking great. I'm sure if he came to LA, he could find brilliant outfits as well. I see them all the time.
If you feel like you'd be more happy at FIT, then you should definitely go for it. But if you go there expecting everyone to be dressed well, then you'll be dissapointed.

i think it really just depends on the area that you go to in LA. if you go to Echo Park and places like that you will find chicks dressed like Cory Kennedy and that whole crowd. if you go to the Valley you will find Abercrombie chicks and suburban-gangsta kids. if you go to beverly hills area you will find the "old fashioned" rich LA. then melrose and Robertson is all the hip-rich kids and scenesters...
Venice beach and kind of Santa Monica are the hippie-boho-artsy-type people.

i think LA is really quite more diverse than NY. the fake tans and big t*ts usually come out at night during club time.

i think it's much easier to look "stylish" in colder climate. First of all, you can wear black & grey all the time - two easiest colours to wear and nobody would blame you that you're too glum. Second of all, when it's hot, there are all kinds of body malfunctions you have to fight / conceal like fat, cellulite, varicose veins, bodyhair, SWEAT. Nobody looks good with makeup running down their faces either.

I disagree w/ this 110%, lol, but that's just me. I don't see what's so stylish about being hidden under a coat or a bulky sweater all day, but I suppose that's just me.

LA style is different all around the city, but the girls on the Hills are probably a good example; that's how people dressed at my school and along Robertson, etc. I agree that in NY people probably dress with more structure and less flip flops Im guessing, lol.

I won't say much about NYC, I havent been there, but I doubt I'll be all that impressed when I go.

LA is completely tasteless. Nothing tasteful or chic has ever emerged from LA, it's always Ed Hardy, Christian Audiger...etc...

NYC is hotter than hell in the summers, which I think is why everyone is so well rounded. 10 degree winters 110 degree summers

NY-The Joneses
LA-Keeping up with the Joneses

Reminds me of Eastern Washington. (And how California is most of the time - around 110 degrees.)

Well, a lot of super chic items such as trench coat does not really befriend LA's climate...

great thread.i'm thinking of moving to the west coast as well, having lived all of my life on the east coast,ny,toronto now.
so what is the weather really like in winter in la?what do people wear in winter?

^ Hoodie's from Abercrombie or that brand Paris always wears w/ the anchors and some sort of Ugg x Miniskirt combo.

^hahaha maybe if you live in Orange County or The Valley. LA during winter you can wear light coats like a trench coat and it does actually get a bit nippy. light layering is good :) sometimes you can get away with layering a turtle neck long sleeve under a sundress and wear stockings and a light coat.

i think LA has a bad reputation around here! there are very stylish people here! don't rely on people like Paris or Britney or the kids in The Cobrasnake to represent LA style if anything they are an embarassment!

Wow, LA really isn't THAT bad...actually, it's not bad at all. And it's true, it really depends on the area one spends most of their time in. Beverly Hills, The Valley, Echo Park, Koreatown, Hollywood, Venice, Malibu...each area differs so much from one another. As for fake boobs - yes, there's a lot, but more so if you go into Beverly Hills, the West Side, West L.A., Hollywood...not so much if you go into Echo Park Silverlake Area. And don't even bring Orange County into this discussion cuz that's a whole nother WORLD.

And mind you, most people from LA are NOT from LA. They're from all over the country...all over the world. So you can't generalize and say this and that is LA style. Cuz it isn't. It's style people bring from all walks of life.

Plus the other factors:

1. We drive everywhere which means we can be a bit more lavish w/our clothes & shoes. We don't have to worry about comfort too much. We can wear our highest heels and not have to worry about running to catch the train home.

2. We have 1.5 seasons - Summer and a bit of winter. We show more skin throughout the year which makes us seem like we're always half naked (trust me, we're not).

3. Shows like Baywatch, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, etc made people all over the world assume that's how people in LA lived, dressed, ate, screwed...we're not like that (at least the majority isn't)

4. Celebretards (ie: Britney, Lindsay, Paris...) give LA a bad name. People assume that's how all the girls in LA are. Yeah, right...us normal people work and don't spend afternoons cavorting on Robertson (actually, true Angelenos will shudder at the thought of going to Robertson) and spending our hard earned money on Frappuccinos.

5. Hollywood is here. We can't help it if we draw fake, plastic-y, shallow people to our town. We never asked for them so don't blame us.

6. Again with the area thing - LA is very cliquish and people travel in groups. These groups are usually formed in the areas they live in or work in or where the majority of their friends live in. This group also dictates a person's taste in style...or I should say, influences it.

There are so many other points I can touch on. I really don't think it's fair to lump us people from LA into one big group. It's like saying all white people are the same - I don't think French, Brits, Germans, Scandinavians, etc can all be called the same.

And New Yorkers tend to group people, too - bridge and tunnel crowd, uptown, mid-town, upper east side, upper west side...God knows what else. And these groups have their own discernible qualities. LA is the same but for some reason we all get lumped in together.

Anyway, sorry for the LONG post. It's just that I'm sick of people ragging on LA's style. Me being from LA, I take it personally.

Oh, and to the person who started this thread:

I went to Otis, too. And I know what you mean by the school lacking style. But you have to understand that many students there aren't fashion students and could give a rat's a** about clothes. And it's an art school. Despite what people think of art schools, it is TOUGH. I remember being on campus for 40+ hrs a week then going home and working on projects til 4am, trying to squeeze in a few hrs of sleep, and rushing to my 8am class. The last thing on my mind then was my style. ;)

Personally, I do dress depending on the area I'll be in. If I'm having dinner in West Hollywood or Beverly Hills, I will dress nicely in clothes w/cleaner lines and some killer heels. If I'm hanging out in Echo Park, I'll wear my lovely vintage pieces. And if I'm spending the afternoon in Malibu during the summer, you can bet I'll be wearing my favorite flip flops. My closet will make no sense to most, it will seem like my style has no direction and is all over the place, but those from LA will understand it. Down to a perfect American Apparel tee. :p

Edit: Btw, we do put to use all our fabulous winter coats, scarves, and sweaters. The temp can drop to 30F in the evenings. Yes, we do consider this pretty chilly. And yes, we love wearing our winter clothes.

Wow...so much vile. What has LA ever done to you?

So you mean to tell me you don't like Juicy or C&C or Von Dutch? ;)

We might not have much "high end" fashion to speak of, but we are home to Seven For All Mankind, Rock & Republic, Earl Jeans, Frankie B, True Religion (I know some of you have a pair of one of these lines...fess up. haha), Guess, American Apparel, Lucky Brand, Splendid, BCBG, Paige Premium Denim, Modern Amusement, Saint Grace...and not to mention all the "surfer/skater" lines - Volcom, Quik Silver, Roxy, etc.

I'm not saying these are all fabulous clothes, but you can't deny their presence in the consumer market.

Very informative about LA from different point of view. Personally I find that TV Shows indeed give a very high impact on what other people ( especially people from other countries ) percieve the style on certain geographic area.
