What to wear when you're a tourist

looking like a tourist is one of my biggest pet peaves...i absolutly cant stand it. no maps, no big nikons hanging from your neck, no fanny packs, shorts with socks that go half way up your leg haha but i think those would all be obvious to anyone on this forum. i think my biggest piece of advice would be to get off the beaten path..go see the tourist attractions if you want but go exploring and see the real city, it will make your trip much more enjoyable.

um. casual.

maybe. before you go, you should google the city's fashion style.
unless, its japan. cuz... well. u dont wanna dress like a harajuku girl either.. well. then you should, dress like how you USUALLY dress.

In my experience London is such an eclectic mix of styles, cultures and looks, and there is so much to do,that as long as you are true to your own style you won't really stand out.

Avoid Bermuda shorts,Hawaiian shirts, cheap flip-flops and huge logos...

I agree that comfy flats are a must.huge trainers with socks,or shorts, scream 'tourist'.

And furthermore, enjoy your trip. No-one really cares what you look like at all in a city so huge, and it would be a shame to waste your good holiday time worrying about what other people think.

In fact,I don't know how it is for Americans, but the fact that one is foreign is often a good starting point for conversations with interesting new people .

When you go out, tailor your outfit to the place in question. Browse through some British fashion mags before you go. Don't watch Little Britain.

Good luck!!:flower:

heat and humidity in london?
the only place sensible to wear just a t-shirt is the tube
besides who cares if you look like a tourist? i mean you're gonna be taking photo's of stuff so no matter how you dress people will think you're a tourist

I know that NYC is the melting pot, etc... I'm going there for my senior trip and I need some guidance on what to wear. The main thing I want to know is what kind of shoes? I know I need some comfy ones (maybe flats or nike air rift?) because I plan to walk everywhere I can. Thanks for any help you can give:flower:

Great Topic!! What about Spain or France?

Does anyone honestly use those anymore? I mean, most people with any fashion sense wouldn't touch those things.

Leave the "fanny" pack at home. That's the worst.

I was thinking that today:lol: I hate those things... A good alternative would be like a messenger bag or something like that

Dress like you would normally dress. Why do people actually need to wear bermuda shorts/fannypacks when abroad?

At least some elder people still wear fannypacks---but they are the same ones who still wear bermudas, Hawaiian shirts & flip flops when outside their country.

It's funny that people keep wearing it, because it is just such a stereotyphe, and EVERYBODY knows it. There can't be anyone who wouldn't!

first thing i will say is that london is full of cobble stones...
so leave those heels at home..
a wedge, boot or flat is your best bet for walking the streets of london...
that is something that one wouldn't know unless one has spent some time there...

the london girls are a hearty bunch and seem to be able to walk for miles...

:flower:

Hardly, I rarely come across cobbled streets but my advice is dress how you want, people probably won't think that you are tourist unless you dress like a sterotypical one.

I think the most important thing is not to call it a 'fanny pack'. That's gonna be a pretty big giveaway in London.

In my experience, I have encounter three rules that should be followed:
  1. The weather dictates your wardrobe and dress.
  2. Do not carry a map around looking confused- no matter what you're wearing. Trust me, my mother's friend was born and raised in Australia, but while showing us around...
  3. And obviously don't dress in the usual tourist gear that's been mentioned by this forum.
