Olivier Lapidus Joins Lanvin Amid Plans to Make Brand ‘A French Michael Kors’
Lapidus joined Lanvin as artistic director on Monday, replacing Bouchra Jarrar, who exited the company last week.

PARIS, France — Olivier Lapidus has replaced Bouchra Jarrar as artistic director at Lanvin, amid plans to revamp the brand as “a French Michael Kors,” sources have told BoF.

The company, which experienced a 23 percent fall in revenue in 2016, is also understood to be leaving its Boissy d’Anglas headquarters, where founder Jeanne Lanvin founded her atelier in 1889, and moving to the suburban Levallois area at the end of the year. Sources have described the changes as “the end of an era.”

The company’s strategic overhaul follows a report in January that it appointed advisory firm Long Term Partners to conduct an audit and recommend ways to reduce the company's costs.

Lapidus, who started his new role on Monday, was creative director of Balmain Homme from 1985-86 before joining Maison Lapidus, and is the son of the late Ted Lapidus, who designed clothing for The Beatles. Following the closure of Maison Lapidus in 2000, Lapidus worked on capsule collections with a variety of partners, and designed the décor for Paris’s Hotel Felicien. Most recently, he founded his own maison, “Creation Olivier Lapidus,” which he describes as an e-couture house.

If a “French Michael Kors” is indeed Lanvin’s new strategy, Lapidus would be well placed, given his desire to develop a lifestyle brand. “You don’t create a product, you create a universe, “ he told Bonjour Paris in 2014. “Lifestyle is the last link in the chain of fashion design.”

His appointment follows Jarrar’s departure from the label on Thursday, after just 16 months in the role. Jarrar, a talented couturier who was last week made an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, one of France’s highest honours, was unable to single-handedly revive the brand, which has suffered from falling revenues amidst a lack of investment since the days of her predecessor.

“I have pressure,” she admitted in a March interview with the South China Morning Post. “I wanted to dedicate my whole self to Lanvin, to relaunch the maison and brand, so I shut my own label down… But I need the whole house’s support; alone it’s impossible.”

Jarrar succeeded Alber Elbaz, who left the brand after 14 years in October 2015 following disagreements with its Taiwan-based Chinese owner, Shaw-Lan Wang.

In June, Lanvin reported a 23 percent fall in revenue for 2016, down to €162 million after a net loss of €18.3 million. By comparison, in 2015 it reported a profit of €6.3 million, and in 2012, at the label’s peak, revenues were reported at €235 million.

Lanvin is one of France's last major independent fashion brands. Wang, who became the brand’s controlling shareholder in 2001, has been reluctant to invest in the brand for many years. According to reports, she would not let her associate Swiss investor Ralph Bartel, who owns 25 percent of Lanvin, inject more cash into the business to support the brand as it would dilute her stake.

Representatives for Lanvin and Lapidus did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Cool, so they want to make the oldest couture house a French version of a brand that nobody wants anymore because it's literally everywhere and it's so cheap. But actually nobody wants Lanvin now so what's the point?

I read that entire article with my jaw on the floor. No words.

Why compare themselves to MK? Yeah, i agree. So cheap.

how does the current lanvin menswear fit into this french michael kors picture?

very sad to witness such a level of mismanagement with a brand like lanvin.

We already know that this won't work at all. Just look what happened to Bouchra Jarrar - she was out after 16 months and her work was far more commercial than Alber's imho yet it wasn't strong enough to reach new clients. I'm pretty sure the same will happen to this guy. But on the other hand the image of the brand will be even more damaged than it is now.

So basically they want to revive the brand selling basic handbags with a JL logo in place of the MK logo...I already can feel the smell of bankruptcy!

"the French Michael Kors"?!!! :o:o
Would be better to close the label at this point than witness that....

And the ironic thing is that Michael Kors has financial problems and is closing a lot of stores in US...and this people from Lanvin want to emulate him! The executives don´t seem to be following the news!

Also, how insulting to Lanvin's history and the brand by comparing it to MK and idolizing it. It's gonna be a mess, but I hope not!

Oh my ...
Lanvin you goin down this in not going to work AT ALL "French Michael Kors" really ?!!

For example Parisians already seeing M Kors as a brand who's SO CHEAP : for the showy people and with no taste and fits for "boujee people" I don't even know how to say it properly in english but that is not good at all.
Especially if they try to do a huge investment in accessories and handbag customer won't buy it ! if they want "mid level luxe" they will go for a Lagerfeld or Zadig et Voltaire ... brands like that but no way for this "new asthetic Lanvin is going and I can't imagine how the old clientiele react to that drastic change ....
If they are seriously making those change all their products must be best seller or it will be a big fail

Michael Kor's business model is hardly something to follow , his brand over saturated the market with cheap quality bags and the brand is suffering from over kill. Tom Ford's Gucci is the business model to follow. Wow this guy is a F***g moron lol

Lol, Michael Kors? Please.

Lanvin was once my favourite brand. It just hurts to read this.

Disaster already underway, why not bury it right away. Sad story.

I looked up his designs and from what I could see through all the interior design pics, it looks like cheap balmain/zuhair mural clashes or crystals and stretch satin Who knows if he'll even stick to the archives but I don't see any good coming of this.

Terrible. Madame Lanvin's legacy deserves more than the "French Micheal Kors".

Just close the brand, bide your time and reopen with a new, talented designer and completely new management.
