Ah, my only skinny pants is ruined...now I only own one pair of pants.
I'm actually thinking about banning pants from my wardrobe and resolve to wear skirts and dresses. But that's so freaking cold in winter.

yeah thats what I would like too, just wear skirts and dresses. But at the moment i dont really have a nice dress to wear in the winter, just two skirts. I will go shopping for dresses soon.

Wow, I have the exact opposite problem. I almost never wear pants, as I have no idea how to build an outfit around them. Plus I never seem to find affordable pants that look good on me. The thing is, I'm tired of wearing skirts and dresses all the time, I feel it's gotten too girly.

^ Maybe you can try investing in a good pair of pants that fit you well. I find it hard to find well-fitting pants as well, so when I do find a pair that flatters me, I buy it even if the price makes me cringe a bit.

You're right, I actually did that a few years ago. I got the pants tailored smaller after I lost weight, but they're just not as nice anymore. I ought to invest in a good pair of pants or two again.

This always happens when I go to Denver:

I walk into Urban Outfitters, and all I want to dress like the employees and people that shop there. I can't always drive to U.O. because it's about a 30-35 drive away, and I can't think of any other way to obtain that style.

Does anyone know what I could call it? Maybe if I had a name to it, I could ID pieces in other stores that would fit the style.

^^ i have no idea what to call it, but like you i had a similar fascination with the UO-style, especially when i'd just moved to seattle and felt hopelessly out of place. UO seemed like just the thing that would help me fit in, which was important to me then.

and i do think the store's aesthetic can help a person jumpstart their style in that direction if they're so inclined.

for me, it helped to collect the catalogs (there's always a stack at the front door) and study them. it seems like just your average thrift store goods, but with very of-the-moment accessories. for this moment, the accessories would be headbands, pointy kitten heels, and buffalo plaid. i think.

I want to turn glamour style like Marilyn Monroe had into casual, and I need an inspiration. I haven't got any idea how can I do this. I love jeans and little 'scruffy' stuff, but I want to be glamour, classy and feminine, too. totally dont know how to dress glamour an stay me - maybe jeans with a silk top and nice jewelry? maybe I should mix these two styles - scruffy and glamour (is it possible?) or look at stars which have "old hollywood" style (aguilera?)

You're in luck, because that mix of high/low style is totally in fashion right now, and there are plenty of editorials, ads, fashion shows, celebrities, and streetstyle to get inspiration from.

I would start by focusing on glamourous or ladylike accessories and hair/makeup, and incorporate those into a casual jeans/scruffy style. You could nix the idea that casual has to mean scruffy, and wear very refined casual clothes. Like replace hoodies with blazers, jeans with trousers, t shirts with button-front shirts etc.

Or you could play up the contrast between a "scruffy" outfit paired with, for example, red lipstick and nails, polished hair, and fancy jewellery. Look at the model streetstyle thread - I adore those pictures of models outside of fashion show venues, where they often have super-polished hair and makeup from a previous show, but have changed into their everyday clothes.

For classic inspiration, take a look at Grace Kelly's thread - she always looked glamourous in jeans and a tshirt. Also look for screen shots of The Misfits with Marilyn Monroe.

Personal style for me has meant different things over the years. My origional vision as a young girl was 40's inspired femme fatales, which changed to full on Victorian Gothic splendour in university.

For the past few years most looks I wear have a basis of sci-fi noir. (elements of fetish, cyber, gothic and metal) I know this may sound 'dress- up' for many people but for my 5 foot petite hourglass figure, naturally alabaster skin, big round green eyes and raven black straight bobbed hair- the graphic coloures and sleek lines really compliment me (I love crimson red, violet or cobalt blue with my blacks) . My wardrobe contains lots of stompy boots, Deadly girlz corsets, vinyl, leather, rubber and graphic futuristic design.

Recently I've been missing a softer femininity and have been wearing some softer more gothic styles- but I have to be careful as ruffles and bows make me look like a Victorian doll and as I've always been the 'cute (as in sweet) liitle one' I have an aversion to anything which makes me look 'girlie'.

Well, that's me.

i think i know what you're getting at - wanting to be casual but still look and feel elegant. i always turn to the casual looks that women wore in the fifties and sixties for inspiration - try watching episodes of the old Dick Van **** show (you can rent them on DVD) and take a look at how Mary Tyler Moore was dressed as Laura Petrie. The show aired from '61 to '66, and Laura was a suburban housewife who still made sure she looked chic, even when doing the dishes. She wore a lot of skinny capris in place of jeans, and often a boxy top which gave the look great proportions. (it didn't hurt that she was stick thin.) i love her look. sometimes when i dress that way, people will say - "that look... i can't quite place it..." and i'll just say, "Laura Petrie." also, a similar inspiration for me is Audrey Hepburn in the movie Sabrina. She is dressed quite casually in many scenes, but always very smart - blacks and white, etc. she also wore a lot of skinny capris! anyway, i would suggest taking a look at the casual styles of that time for some ideas.

You could mix the styles if you want, but you could also emulate the casual styles Marilyn Monroe actually wore. This would be more like pastel or bright capris instead of jeans, and cotton halters and blouses, not silk. So it wouldn't be mixing high and low pieces, but rather wearing pieces that are themselves casual but polished.

I just think the "nice top and jeans" look is a bit overdone and therefore hard to do well...
