Are we now just not doing clothes anymore?

I don't know him personally, but we run in the same circle. From what I heard, he's much more happy mentally because he's no longer under the pressure of creating collections to sell. He just makes what he wants now and produces what his clients order (Peter Do Club).

It's sad he didn't make it far with Helmut Lang (as I'm a fellow Asian American), but you know, maybe being happy is what we all thrive for in life.

So, the industry chewed in up and spat him out in less than 6 years? f*ck me.

^ Now in the case Peter Do, are we that surprised?

He was constantly touted as a iykyk kind of designer from the start but it never really went far. Shame his Lang didn’t work out, but his vernacular is just corporate fashion ninjas and the Brenda Hashtags of the world. It was too limited from the beginning, no matter how many years at Celine he did with Philo.

I sound like a hater, and I am. He’s just part of that conceited crowd of designers and creatives that are all about “redefining classics” with a grey scale instagram grid. There was no true longevity with it, nor conviction.

I'm going to be a bit tough on this one but I find that attitude utterly naive and irresponsible. Why take the job in the first place if you're unable to understand the expectations and implications of the position? Helmut Lang is not an art gallery, the brand belongs to the same group that owns Uniqlo. Let's be real for a second. He was given the chance to take on an incredible house and he failed at turning it into an interesting chapter.

I too was disappointed by his HL, but in his defence (somehow), it feels like there's a generational problem with reviving the great minimalists of the 90s. Do at Lang, the Meiers at Sander, Leoni at Calvin Klein, Gallici at Demeulemeester seem to be willingly ignoring their houses' respective archives. They had clear POV's, and were able to mould characters that you would want to embrace and/or embody. Unfortunately Do and Gallici went for the gimmicks of the respective founders while ignoring the bigger picture: making desirable, simple yet edgy clothes for a cultured audience. On their part, Leoni and the Meiers just went for Philo-redux, while I wouldn't even qualify her as a minimalist.
Looking at the offerings of these four brands in their mid-to-late 90s heydays make me desperately wish that someone would just basically reissue their old collections. I'd be willing to sacrify a fair deal of my income for those. And quite surprisingly, it feels like no brand is able to fill the gap they left in the market, except for Lemaire, maybe. Either you go for boring Uniqlo for the 1% like Loro Piana, or for something like the Row, which is well-executed but pretty soulless and lacks creativity, at least to me. Both options being, obviously, obscenely overpriced.

^ I'm so with you re: reediting the archives. That's what they should do at Helmut Lang. I too would pay a fair share for it!

I purchased a pair of jeans from the Uniqlo x Helmut Lang capsule. Since Fast Retailing owns HL, they should just reissue the denim range via Uniqlo. Best fitting and best quality jeans I've bought in a while.
