CHINA: US magazine's swimsuit issue poses test for censors
Promoters of Chinese-language edition of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue hopes authorities won't consider it p*rn*gr*phy
South China Morning Post

By Bill Savadove
Shanghai --- Sports Illustrated magazine will bring its notorious swimsuit issue to the mainland in March for the first time, but the publishers of the Chinese-language edition are hoping photos of scantily clad models won't upset the authorities.
"This is the first time the swimsuit issue has come to China. But we will probably delete some unsuitable content to adapt to the tastes and customs of Chinese readers," editor-in-chief Lin Libo said.
The cover of the US edition, which goes on sale on February 13, shows eight topless models covering themselves.
Teasers promise "Heidi Klum wearing just paint" and "Tennis ace Maria Sharapova as you've never seen her".
China bans anything it considers p*rn*gr*ph*c. Amid growing commercialisation, state-run media frequently runs photos of fashion shows and beauty pageants, while local versions of foreign "lads' magazines" have also appeared.
Mr Lin believes the nation is ready for the racy photos from the US edition.
"This is a healthy magazine showing famous sports stars in swimwear, not p*rn*gr*phy."
The Chinese Sports Illustrated would vet the photos in-house, and Mr Lin denied there would be any additional censorship by the authorities.
The magazine was considering using famous Chinese models and sports stars in future editions.
The first run will go on sale across the mainland on March 2.

That was last year's-because last year had the 8 former cover models, Maria S., and Heidi in body paint.Atelier said:More news:

So add Heidi to the mix.
I would have to agree with you because in addition to that she CAN still do high fashion if she wants to-she did a few NY SS 07 shows-and she is very marketable.happycanadian said:definitely sounds like last year.
the SI magazine has gone SO downhill since probably 2000 or 2001. i remember when Rebecca Romijn was on the cover, that was the last "great" issue, IMO. they just have a dreadful model selection alot of the time.
i think that the smartest cover girl, for everyone involved, would be KK. this is because it would benefit all 3 sides:
1. Victoria's Secret -- now that Heidi Klum is virtually retired from the company, and Tyra is officially gone, their only big-name girl is Gisele (who, in the mainstream straight-male demographic, is not as popular as Tyra or Heidi). VS needs to have a new big-name, a new super popular supermodel. if Karolina gets the cover of SI, it will up her exposure 10x and bring even more attention to her work for VS. plus, they've invested millions of dollars in KK's contract, so they want her to get as much attention as possible.
2. Sport's Illustrated - They've basically had poor model selection for the past few years and while they used to be THE place for the most successful models to go (or THE place to launch a new supermodel), that hasn't happened since Rebecca Romijn, Laetitia Casta and Heidi Klum (or perhaps Petra Nemcova). Karolina Kurkova is one of the most recognizeable names and faces in the fashion world, and is becoming more and more well known by the general public. putting her on their cover would help draw people who recognize her face, while also piquing the interests of fashion-folk and not to mention the fact that she really has the perfect body for swimsuits. she suits the swimsuit issue perfectly.
3. Karolina Kurkova - not much to say here. it's really rather obvious. KK has her huge contract with VS and she's on her way to becoming as famous as the supermodels before her. landing a SI cover will bring her nothing but positive press and get her into all those men's magazines 100 Hottest lists, which is great publicity and exposure.

But that's just my opinion.
