Red Hair

I just colored my hair dark burgundy from the Garnier brand. I had to get rid of my black dye with Color Fix and then colored it red. It turned out pretty good!

I dyed my hair bright bright copper over my bleached white blonde. Any tips on how to make it stay, after one wash it's horrible and faded!

Is this the first time you've dyed it? Because I find that with reds, it takes 2 or 3 times dying it over a hand full of months before the colour sticks without fading out really fast. It seems to need to build up some layers of the colour. (does that make any sense?)
Also, I really recommend a super gentle shampoo like bumble and bumble and a conditioner that will protect colour. (I've been using the Burt's Bees colour protect and it has stuff that even protects it from uv rays in it)
Also, try not to use hot water when washing it.

Yes, it's the first time. Well, I put a semi on, and then put a permanent on, and that didn't stick well so I've put another semi over that.

My hair is pretty knackered from the bleach, will moisturising shampoos damage the color intensity? Thanks so much for the advice btw, I shall continue on my quest to be ginger!

Yes, don't give up! Red sometimes just takes a while, especially if you're doing it yourself. I always use something moisturizing on my hair (deep treatments and such) although I also use hairdryers and straighteners, it doesn't seem to affect the colour. I find what strips the colour out the fastest is the sun and hot water :P

It's funny, because red always fades quickly at first, but then it's the hardest color to get rid of! I still have red undertones though I got my blonde/brown hair dyed cooler

 Yes, red. the most difficult! As goregeous says - the sun is the worst for red hair. It really strips the color out. Love that shot of Amy Adams - I've been compared to her before (though my hair is not as orange/red as hers). From True Blood - I just love her look/color, Deborah Ann Woll (she plays Jessica).

This is my red hair. I was blonde but there are way too many bleached blonde girls in clubland so I fancied going a bit vivienne westwood!

I've heard that this has something to do with the actual dye molecules being a different size than other colours. My sister was trying to explain it to me but she was talking so fast ha ha.

I've been trying to get to a bold copper shade too, something like yours Mindbear. I had a darker crimson red and for some reason the copper dyes keep going more of a rust colour, even though I had the colour stripped out. So frustrating.

I've found the way forward is going for the proper bright semi permanent dyes on top of a permanent copper color. Fudge paintbox and stargazer do some intense copper colors. I've gone even brighter now....it's quite insane, but I love being a red head!

any tips for dying reddish hair back to a light/medium brown colour? these red tones are stubborn..:o i naturally have reddish tones in my hair and coloured my hair a reddish brown to accentuate them.. but i want to try going lighter and am having trouble getting the red out, or at least lessening them. thanks!

best to seek a professional but if its DIY then i would go for Ash brown dyes that helps neutralize the red tones more but its still tough. avoid 'Golden' Browns

i dont know much about DIY toners but im thinking those could help as well

The Redhead Hair Thread

I saw a thread on blondes and on brunettes, but couldn't find one on us redheads. Thought I'd have a go, see how many firecrotches crawl out of the woodwork. :innocent:
