Red Hair

rite now my hair looks like this

i absolutely love the colour...the problem is, my roots are MASSIVE and i NEED to dye it...but its not even a proper colour...
ive had it coloured in March, i went from black to BRIGHT orange...obviously they had to bleach it first...when the colour faded i put a drug store do it yourself colour (i think it was Schwarzkopf Live 'Real Red') but it faded pretty quickly too so i just let it be and thats the result now...
i really dont know what do with my hair...whether to bleach it and go blonde, or stay a redhead...
i need help!!!!!!!! any suggestions?

Fairy: I'd bleach it, I love blonde hair.

I'm thinking about toying with some highlights, I'm a natural ginger so do you think blonde streaks would be too harsh? Or should I go for something a bit more subtle like a strawberry blonde?

I brought this up earlier but it looks like it got buried. What does everyone think of bleached eyebrows on a redhead? I saw a few models with this look and I'm only considering it because I overplucked my brows and they all grew back an ashy brown. Copper dye comes out every two weeks, so I'm looking for something a bit more permeant.

^ I know what you mean... I was blonde growing up, but as I've progressed into my twenties my hair has turned more towards a strawberry blonde.

Few years now I have had dark brown hair...is it impossible to have that kind of red hair?
any tips? Bleaching and then adding red colour, that´s it?

^^ how dark is your hair? red tones are definitely possible and it's possible to lighten your hair a few shades, and i find even having a very brilliant red glaze can give the illusion of a lighter/brighter red on dark hair. you should ask your stylist specifically how -- it'll be easier if your hair is dark brown and not black, but getting to a medium auburn like the one here shouldn't be impossible. might be pricey, but they can do it. if you hair is quite dark i would not recc trying to do that yourself though

to go from dark brown/black to red, you need to get colorzap (if dyed dark) or bleach if naturally dark. i went from black to red now...but thinking about going back to black. i dye it every few weeks with 'rosewood' by natural instincts and then feria red every few months. and shampoo with dove for color treated hair and john freda red head shampoo

^^shampooing with a redhead shampoo really does a LOT to keep your colour bright for weeks after the salon. i'm a blonde and my hair is a red that's the same darkness as my hair but copper-toned, and i find the slight red tone it deposits on my hair also makes my roots blend a lot better since the difference is in SHADE and not DARKNESS.

^^ am i the only one that's never had trouble getting the red i want??? granted i think my hair takes colour very easily and is naturally that dark ash blonde that lets you do anything, but i've always found it quite simple to get my colour the way i want it!! try going to a slightly better salon where you have a little colour 'consultation' first -- i find talking to a colorist for 10 minutes about what you want helps a lot, and often you'll find you are surprised as to what you 'actually' want.

i always think i want my hair a 'dark' red and it turns out that the tone i'm looking for is actually usually around a 6 or a 7 (the numbers always vary, but the few places i've been seem to do the 0 = black, 10 = platinum scale? i don't understand.) and much more of a strawberry-blonde than the deep auburn i always 'think' i want, because i am so pale. like i tell them i want 'auburn,' and then they show me swatches and i'm all, that one! and it's actually the lighter one, and it comes out looking great. good salons should have swatches or at least a book of photos of colours and the colorist should be able to talk to you about his/her technique + what/how they'll achieve the colour.

i had red hair for like few months, and the color would wash out after like 2 washings.... but then again it wasnt normal red hair

I have exactly the same problem, my hair is an intense orange color, not even ginger, just pure brightest orange, and it lasts three washes and goes dull, I hate it, my bathroom is always bright orange from the dye run, if I dance the dye runs over my face in my sweat....but I can't leave the orange behind!

Can someone darker(skin wise) do red hair without it being unflattering? I'm talking about the coppery,golden reds. Not the red reds or the burgundy reds. How about tanner east asians? Or people with more yellowish skin tones?

To be honest, I can't really think of a way copper-ish red hair would look good on someone with a darker tanned skin tone or yellow-under tones. For me, it just does not work. My mother has quite dark olive-colored skin and has very dark hair with sections colored burgundyish red which I think looks quite nice. I think those tones would perhaps work (as someone suggested above) as a kind of sheen or color overlay against dark hair. But that's just me imagining it in my head. I can't think of anyone at the moment who has a darker tanned complexion with copper-ish red hair.

Has anyone used Natural Instincts Caribbean Mahogany? Its supposed to be a bright auburn which is what I want. Has anyone tryed any other wash outs? I dont want permanant color. My hair is a medium brown right now with a reddish tone in the sun.

I find level 2 dyes to be kind of pointless -- they do wash out, but they don't ever deposit much colour for me and always seem to damage my hair an awful lot more than you'd expect.

If you want just more red tone with no roots + less committment, I'd probably actually go with a colour-depositing shampoo or get a glaze done at a salon -- you won't have roots, and instead of damaging your hair, glazes often condition it and will make it shinier/healthier. bumble and bumble's colour depositing shampoos work ok, and i've really liked the results of a lot of red glazes i've gotten at salons. i try to avoid dyeing my hair often, and generally i get a proper haircut + colour every 8 weeks but usually go in aroudn 4 weeks for a cheapy bang trim and quick glaze to keep things looking fresh.

If you want to totally genuinely change the colour of your hair to a different shade that is noticeably more red, you're going to have to go with permanent.

I always get my hair colored at the salon, my hair is medium-dark brown and I get it to a lighter red color no problem (without bleach). It does fade-mine usually turns to a light orangy-brown. It's not my ideal color, but it doesn't look too bad either. But be prepared for it to fade. I was told to wash my hair in cold water with a gentle shampoo....but who really wants to take an icy shower?

Haha ditto I have it all over my pillows, coats, everything. But the awesomeness of orange hair outweighs these tiny disadvantages!!
