Red Hair

I always get my hair colored at the salon, my hair is medium-dark brown and I get it to a lighter red color no problem (without bleach). It does fade-mine usually turns to a light orangy-brown. It's not my ideal color, but it doesn't look too bad either. But be prepared for it to fade. I was told to wash my hair in cold water with a gentle shampoo....but who really wants to take an icy shower?

i usually just keep my head out of the water for most of my shower and then shampoo at the end (if at all) with a cooler water, and only shampoo twice a week at most

Haha ditto I have it all over my pillows, coats, everything. But the awesomeness of orange hair outweighs these tiny disadvantages!!

Haha! You should see my pillows, just a patch of insanely bright orange, my shirt collars and all my towels, orange. However, I love being stopped several times a day to be told that people love my hair color, it makes me feel better seeing as I'm a bit of a fatty at the moment from a bad sleeping pattern and always being ill. Ginger rules!

As an aside, the best orange hair dye that i've found is napalm orange by special effects. It's american though, which is a total pain in the bum!

I have dark brown hair, and I really want to dye it this shade red...would I have to bleach it first?

^ I think you probably would have to bleach it first, but I'm not a hairdresser, so I am not positive.

I am so tempted to dye my hair red at the moment. I have medium brown hair that I have dyed a copperish wash over anyway, but I really want to go red. I have been light brown and blonde before and it suited me, but when I dyed my hair black I looked really washed out, so I'm not sure if red will look good on me or not, as I obviously don't suit all hair shades. I sort of have reasonably tanned skin though, which is why I am thinking it might not. I am torn between these 3 shades though...

I think the 2nd or 3rd one would probably suit me best, but it's so hard to decide.

Oh me too, I have dark pillows for that very reason!

I've got natural red hair but I've had it like this for 3 years now, and love it, even if it is a hassle keeping it bright. I have to bleach before I dye it, and try not to wash it more than twice a week, dry shampoo in between is a godsend

gorgeous color! i wanted to do mine that color but my hairdresser said I'd need to bleach it first:shock:

You do really, otherwise it doesnt go that bright. But once it's done I just bleach my roots for 10 mins or so first, and keep it topped up like that. Its not that bad

I dyed my a hair a sort of dark brown with a reddish tint. Does this count? I hated it at first, but after a week I've started to really love it. Smokey eyes look great with red hair, and I love doing smokey eyes!

I have a question though - will my hair fade into an orange shade after a lot of washes? My natural hair color is dark brown.

I don't like bright red or artificially red at all. Natural redheads are great and they can enhance it or enrich the tone. Some brunettes can successfully go to a rich auburn color which is just about the best and most appealing color to me. Blondes can go a bit towards strawberry blonde without it looking fake. Beyond that, you might as well go bright purple or green because it just doesn't work.

Post 231 is great. Reminds me of Nikki Cox in her early days. The last two in 244 are good too.

i think those reddish tones look great on asian girls and i always wish i could get my hair to THAT red but i can't quite because i'm naturally blonde!

i doubt it will really 'fade to orange' but you probably will have some fading + it'll get a bit brassy -- glazes + colour shampoo help with this, and you can always use a rinse or wash-out-dye in between salon trips if it's getting especially nasty.

^What if you dye your hair black first, and then dye a reddish brown over it? I don't know if that'd work... Ooh, thank you. I think I should probably start using a color-friendly shampoo!

i find it really helps a LOT. stuff like clarifying shampoos are meant to strip out anything foreign from your hair... and in the case of dyed hair you want to make sure that all stays in there and doesn't get too chemically messed with

after all this talk about glazes and colour upkeep, just wanted to put it out there that i discovered davines products for redheads this week and they're by far my favourite ever -- my stylist used the finest pigments glaze on my hair and it's awesome and i also picked up the color-depositing conditioner -- might also work for those with hair wanting to just add a reddish tone? i hate sounding like a product advertisement here but i seriously just LOVE the colour it came out and am psyched abuot the conditioner to keep it up.

Two days ago I've dyed my dark brown hair red... I took a picture of Julianne Moore (in May 2008 issue of Vogue Paris, when I will understand how to post photos... I'll do it!) with me to the salon, but actually the result is a shade that is VERY similar to the Nicole Kidman's charachter in Moulin Rouge (yes, my avatar is a tribute! XD)... I'm sooo happy. I've always been fascinated by red hair, I'm so jealous of the lucky ones who are born with it. My eyes are deeply dark brown and my eybrows are pretty dark too, but my skin is extremely pale, with pink undertones. I will post a photo as soon as I can! I'm still not sure if it's better to dye my eyebrows too, I need opinions...

please provide a credit for your image - thanks!

Well, my shade of red is exactly like this...

**Please don't quote photos**

Credit: OhNoTheyDidnt - I took the picture from Kissablecake's post, in this thread, and that's what she reported...
