Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli’s nostalgia for California dreamscapes in the late Seventies yielded a charmingly offbeat pre-fall collection for Red Valentino. Full of sheer, high-neck prairie dresses, allover psychedelic floral prints, crocheted knitwear and other romantic frills, the lineup was full of throwback details done with an artisanal hand that nicely tied it back to Valentino’s main collection.
Decorative effects elevated the collection’s evening and casual looks alike: a black point d’esprit evening dress was covered in sequined floral appliqués, and a red-and-black ribbed cardigan came trimmed in striped rabbit fur. Particularly noteworthy was Chiuri and Piccioli’s use of fanciful details to distinguish and personalize utilitarian outerwear. Trenches and army jackets were embellished with studs and sequin-embroidered doves, and a cool camel suede shearling topper featured floral leather patchwork.
