focus interview (german translation)
and yeah, the coat is way too big...
Mr. Pattinson, these days ecstatic fans scream „Kiss me! Bite me!” at you. One can barely believe, that last year you got tons of hate-mail when you were cast as Edward.
Every “Twilight”-reader – especially the young female readers – had imagined their own Edward. Right from the beginning it was clear to me, that some people wouldn’t be happy about me being chosen. Since then I haven’t peeked into the fan-forums – where me being cast was a hot topic for weeks – anymore. On top of that I didn’t want to drift off into the cheesy-teen-romances with my interpretation of the character. Our story has a lot more depth. Everything constantly deals with life, death, true love, integrity, loyalty.
Is it true, that the audition literally took place on the casting couch?
Yes! I was at home in London and originally planned to simply send in a video tape. My then room-mate – a man – helped me at shooting it by reading Bellas part. Soon it was pretty clear that that wasn’t a good idea. I took a plane that same night over to LA. The next day I auditioned at Caths place. I was astounded to see that Kristen was there as well. Cath made us play four scenes among them Bellas and Edwards first lovescene. And that on her bed! She wanted to test our chemistry.
How did it go?
Great! Kristen and i worked right from the beginning although I was terrified of her.
Why?
She’s really tough and a great actress for just being 18. There are maybe one or two others like that in Hollywood. She knows exactly what she wants of a role and defends it vehemently (laughs). I on the other hand always get the feeling that I have absolutely no clue, what I’m doing.
How did you prepare for the part?
I already travelled to Portland 2 ½ months before we started shooting and slowly turned into a loner. I wanted to feel Edwards loneliness, his complete isolation. I’ve read the “Twilight” books over and over again, and of course the script. I stayed away from the sun and became paler and paler. On top of that I worked out 4 hours a day to work on a six-pack. But huge muscles didn’t fit to my image of the torn, desperate Edward so I kept on eating less and less (laughs). But the producers thought my interpretation of Edward was a little too depressive.
How do you play a character that is “so beautiful it hurts looking at him”?
It’s simply impossible, to play him like that. That would be a purely physical performance, like modelling. You always have to consider that Edward is only described from Bellas perspective who is desperately in love and sees him as the most attractive man in the universe. Fundamentally he is an emotionally absolutely empty „human“, who doesn’t even want to live but is damned to because he is immortal. Instead of playing the otherworldly perfect man of the books i concentrated on the tortured part of his character – the extreme loneliness, not to really know why you even exist. Edward didn’t choose to become a vampire. He woke up one day as a vampire and subsequently killed about 50 people because he couldn’t fight it. Finally he meets this human (Bella) who gives his life a reason – and he wants to kill her as well. The guy has serious issues!
