Ticket: Do you attribute getting the role to your good looks?
Pattinson: There were quite a few candidates and for a long time I thought the decision who would get the part would never be made. I’m sure the fact that they chose me has to do with Kristen. We complement each other and aren’t your good-looking couple, we both have rough edges (?).
But you are aware of being an attractive young man…
The fact that it’s already eternalized in the book that Edward is an irresistible vampire detained me at first to even go to the audition. I didn’t want to be presented as a model and I didn’t want to go to the gym to get a six-pack. But in the end I was happy that the movie isn’t so much about that but rather about the uncommon relationship between a human and a vampire.
How does Edward differ from the usual picture of a vampire?
The vampires in “Twilight” are different from the bloodsuckers we know from many movies. Edward and his family neither sleep in coffins nor decay when they step into sunlight. In this movie it’s about the moral question whether a vampire should give into his destiny and kill people or fight against it and try to live in peaceful harmony with humans, which means to live off of animals only, something which mere mortals do as well.
Did you have to explore your own dark side to be able to play a vampire?
In some way I had to, but maybe not like one would expect. Edward was a human himself before he was bitten. How helpless must he have felt when he woke from the dead and got the abnormal urge to drink blood!
You could become a teen-idol with this role…
I rather concentrate on the freedom that comes with the success of the book and movie. As an actor I will be able to choose my future projects.
Since “Harry Potter” you’re being adored by girls. How soon does one enjoy that?
It was weird to be looked at differently by girls after “HP”. Before that I had only played in small tv-series and I never wanted to be a heartthrob. I guess “Twilight” will get me further into that direction but I myself see the movie rather as a test to see how my career could go on and if I can exist as an actor any longer.
Are you scared you won’t be able to deal with the success that “Twilight” will initiate?
I believe everyone can make that decision himself. People who became megastars wanted it. I don’t find it desirable to lead the lifestyle of a megastar. On top of that I believe that cinema will change. It’s not enough anymore for you to appear as the only star in a movie, there have to be at least three.
Wherever you go there are fans. How do you cope with that?
It’s really crazy. I will never get used to people wanting me to turn into my vampire-role and bite them in the neck. Once I almost wanted to introduce myself as Edward because so many fans address me with my characters name.
That proves: a lot has changed for you since “Twilight”
Indeed! To be honest: by now I don’t even like to leave my house anymore (laughs). Who likes to be photographed at the airport when you’re looking really bad…
In the movie you always look great, you spent hours in hair and make-up. How long do you need to get ready in your private time?
Kristen: I pretty much don’t do anything in the morning, I need maybe five minutes in the bathroom. I brush my teeth but that’s about it.
Robert: I don’t even need five minutes…
At least you go to the bathroom, Robert! After all you once admitted to sometimes not washing your hair for weeks!
That’s true (laughs). Washing your hair is annoying. Actually I only go to the bathroom when I need to go to the toilet.
Now be honest. Do you think you’re sexy yourself?
Not really!
What’s sexy to you?
Even if it sounds strange: personal/inner qualities. Basically I think self-confidence is very sexy. It’s really strange because normally I feel drawn to strong girls. But those are the ones you end up having the biggest problems with. It’s a vicious circle!
Bella and Edward are rather outsiders at school. Was it the same with you?
My time at school was rather boring. I was average, neither popular nor hated.
Did you play pranks?
Kristen: Every time we got a substitute-teacher I would act like I was ********. I know it sounds awful – but back then I thought it was funny to make fun of the teachers. And that way I didn’t have to do any homework.
Robert: I was way too scared of the teachers to do something like that – and I was scared someone would rat on me(?) (tell the teacher it was him…). No joke: Anytime I got into trouble in school I instantly started crying.
What’s the biggest difference between you and your film-roles?
I’m not similar to Edward at all.
So you can’t run very fast…
Oh yes I can. But I’m not as stiff as Edward, I’m just not the kind of person to always behave well. Edward is very grown up with his 108 years. Intellectually I’m stuck at being a six-year-old. On top of that Edward isn’t as scared as I am…
What are you scared of?
Darkness. Most of the time I sleep with the lights on. Actually I’m always scared, when I’m in a cab, when I drive myself…I’m a real wimp.
