Runner Thread (All About Running)

I've only just discovered this thread. There's lots of good tips here which I've found very interesting. :D

I never thought I'd say it but I love running. It not only helps my body but it clears the mind and does great things for ones mental well being too. I always feel fantastic when I'm done. I find my day doesn't feel complete if I haven't had a good running session.

If my treadmill died tomorrow, I'd invest in a new one right away.

^ There's no way I would be able to motivate myself to run for any serious period of time on a treadmill. I have to run outside or I get bored. You must have greater will power than me.

I felt a bit like that when I started on the treadmill too. I find listening to my ipod helps plus I like to let my mind wonder/daydream.... I end up thinking about anything from what I want to get shopping, to the grocery shopping list or what I'd buy if I won the lottery....lol. All sorts of stuff. :P
If none of that works, there is the option of putting the treadmill in front of the TV, if there is enough room.

i always run outside, i can't run on a treadmill. today i ran in the rain, i felt like a little girl jumping in puddles  i loved it!

fellow runners....how long does it take you guys to run 5k? what do you think is an 'average' time, or good time, if there is such a thing? :flower:

I'm running about 3 times a week, but I feel like I have to do something besides just running, so I dance 2 - 3 times a week. I do feel a bit pressure on my knees, but nothing critical yet.
I don't think I could ever give up running, I just love it!!!

I currently have a knee injury from a ski accident in Switzerland but after I am fully recovered I plan on running every Sunday morning. My father bought me some new Reebok EasyTone trainers so I thought what a better excuse to go out and test them. Wish me luck and hopefully not too long now till I can go out and run!

^cool, thanks blackcoffee... i was thinking the same.. right now i'm doing it in a bit under half an hour (running fairly slowly)

another qu.. do any of you have troubles with your hips when you run? if so, what do you do to help?

I'd say under half an hour too. It takes me about 25-27 minutes to run 5 ***. I don't try to go super fast, just to keep a steady pace throughout.

As for hip soreness while running, I've never had that. Sometimes I might get a little stiffness in the groin/upper inner leg area but that's about it. It's possible it may be back related ??? I see a Chiroprator regularly due to other back issues....actually I've found since I've been running more, my back issues aren't as back as they used to be. Just a theory... :flower:

are those trainers good?

Well I haven't ran or walked in the properly yet because of my injury but when I do I will give you a full review. Just by trying them on though you can really feel the difference - more support around the ankle, comfy, the bottom of the shoe is more rounded meaning you have to use more muscles to balance meaning a full work out. I will let you know what its like to walk/run in the once I go out and do it!

^I have somekind of Reebok easytones for my work shoes and I'm not too impressed but i guess my shoes are also too big so that maybe reason. Still, I wouldn't buy that expensive trainers anymore..

That's great! I have a dream to run 5km in 30 minutes as my long time goal. I still have to practice! But being able to run thirty minutes would be amazing, I don't think I don't even want to run hours, I'm not that fan of running..

stannerslove Hope your injury gets better soon so you can test those shoes
I still love my asics running shoes, I think every running shoe I own have been asic...they just fit me so well.

Any of my fellow runners get hip flexor pain? If so, how do you handle it? Keep running? Give it a break? Heat/ice?

If you're feeling pressure on your knees perhaps you could try swimming (low impact) instead of dancing?

i've been trying to run for about a year and i do good for a while till i get shin splints.
i already have very good shoes (bought in runnung store) and insoles...
i hate that!

I go 3 times a week but I'll probably start going more now the weather has started to get warmer. I'm trying to make it to 5k as well at the moment.

^^I have had that too, light but painful, and I'm afraid of getting it again. I try to massage and stretch my legs and also not run everyday.

I found this little story about running tips from Harper's Bazaar UK April 2010. They seems to like running, I remember to read intervals last summer.

my camera.

I hate shin splints too. I run about 5-6 miles, 3 times a week. I would run everyday but I don't think my knee would be able to take it.

I've also been getting pain at the front of my ankles, maybe 10 minutes into a run which I have to shake off. I have good shoes too... the acis gel kayano which i bought maybe three months ago.

Does this happen to anyone?
