Simply Vera : Vera Wang for Kohl's

it's available at the kohls in jersey city right now. they have a good assortment of things. quality is hit or miss...some items i thought were so nice, others were just blech. most of the 4s and 6s were gone when i was there. they did have that lovely dark blue dress with the plum ribbon inset at the bodice and blue satin straps and it is very pretty. i loved it; it's very feminine and flattering, and the details are nice on it but i already have so many dresses. i also liked the jacket with the gathering at the neck as well, but didn't get it because i have so many black jackets. i did pick up a sleeveless knit tunic/top with a satin pin-tucked bodice in black...it's very soft and drapes nicely on the body. i do think the collection is overpriced, but luckily my sister sent me a 25% off coupon :)

oh, and thank you for posting the WSJ interview. she sounds like a very smart woman. while i think they might hit a few bumps with this, i hope they work it out and she succeeds...

i just went to my local kohl's and got some stuff. the quality is better than i expected but IMO just right for the prices.

^ Quite interesting the average income of the Kohl's shopper that Vera mentions--that was my impression too.

^^
I was surprised by the average income, do you think its accurate? I thought I read that the average at Saks or Neimans was $200,000 a year? Then again I've never actually been to a Kohls so I don't know what they're like.

How did you get the 25% off coupon? Any chance to find one in a paper or online?

i think that sounds about right about the income. i think a lot of families that have two incomes and kids shop at kohls. i think the orderliness of the store appeals to them.

After I read the WSJ article, I was intrigued by this collection so I checked it out today. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But the sizes tend to run larger than normal. A small or size 2 was still very loose. So if you buy the clothes, you'll probably need to get them altered for a more flattering fit. But I still like the ads for this collection more than the actual pieces...

Agree, sounded right on to me as well. I think they are choosy about where they locate them. The merch always looked to me like stuff I might be interested in elsewhere, but at a discount. I knew people who bought stuff for their kids at Kohl's, or shopped there when money was tight.

IOW, if I could bring myself to darken Wal-mart's doors ... the stuff is ugly. It's not stuff I want to bring into my house at any price ... completely different. Last time I was there it was to spend the store credit I got when I returned a dog crate I got as a birthday present a few years ago. It was very much the wrong shade of brown :innocent: I have never worked so hard to spend $40 in my life  I think I ended up buying tuna or something ...

I went last night to the Jersey City store, I was so disappointed. The cuts run very large for the tops, certainly giving that "pregnant" look that I can't deal deal with. They are also longer, which I just rarely find flattering on anyone - like they hit mid hip. I'm sort of a pear shape, much slimmer on top, but with a waist and hips. Nothing worked for me. The smalls were too big, even larger then an Ann Taylor small. My friend picked up the smallest size left in the dress with the inserts - it was a 10 - that looked smashing, it was black with the plum insert & straps with black faux gems, but it also suited her body type because she's larger on top with less of a waist and tiny hips. The dress didn't work on my because of the way the insert didn't go around the whole dress, it left my waist looking worse rather then better. The dresses and jackets seemed to be more true to size. The short sleeved coat that came in black and top didn't look right on either of use, it ends up looking very bulky unfortunately.

The brocade skirt is very, very long, below the knee and has an unfinished seem. I'm 5'6 pr 7' for reference. Would have been really cute if it was shorter. The purses were too faux leather for me, and while some of the hats and skirts were adorable I can't wear wool - too itchy - so I passed. My friend did get a cloche and a pompom topped hate.

I did get two pairs of shoes, but on second thought I think they're going back. If the tall boots fit your arch right and aren't too tall they do look much better than they're price. Note some shoes are real leather and some are faux leather. The shoes were somewhat true to size but the raisan satin flats I had to go down a size. I bought them but on second thought I think shoes and bags are something that generally need to be spent money on for quality.

The jewelry was rather dull and a little bit too David Yurman.

I totally agree with this. But I just couldn't see altering some of the pieces, maybe if they went on sale or something.

That jacket and dress were the best pieces in my opinion. I couldn't wear the other ones because they gave me that bun in the oven look. While the jacket was pretty fabulous, my problem was that it did nothing for me, it was a great piece to look at but didn't make me look better.

my mom checked out the collection at her local kohls. she was pretty impressed with it. she liked the bathrobes, lingerie and the modal long sleeve tops. she didnt see the gold skirt or the grey leggings (which i had asked her to search for). my mom also really liked the black brocade bubble skirts. she thought the garments were all well executed.
my mother spoke with a sales assistant who said the stuff was selling really well. the sales assistant told my mom that there would be a promotional 30% off deal next week. i hope that this is true and the SA wasnt just talking out of her butt. the sales assistant also said that more items would be out next week.

im looking forward to seeing this stuff for myself.

I checked it out today. I feel bad. I ended up blowing my budget and buying the short sleeve coat in both the tan and black. I had saved up to buy some Temperley for Target and Bitten by SJP. That's all gone. That said I love the coats!

Other than the coats I saw a couple of beautiful dresses. I was really looking for the croped black jacket with the ruffle collar. It was on the mannequin but I didn't find it on the floow.

Simply Vera Vera Wang Kicks Off at Kohl’s
Kohl's Corp.'s nationwide launch Sunday of its new Simply Vera Vera Wang line was low-key at best — although early sales are anything but.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisc.-based retailer ran ads for the collection in Vogue, In Style and Cosmopolitan, trumpeted Simply Vera on its Web site, hung banners over store entrances and received plenty of editorial play, but crowds never materialized.

The company actually put Simply Vera into stores early last week, which might have stolen some of the official launch's thunder. Sources close to the retailer said sales were trending four times ahead of expectations and added Simply Vera Vera Wang was selling five times better than Chaps, which Kohl's launched in 2005.

At a Kohl's location in the West Hills community of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, shoppers benefitted from a roll-out earlier in the week. The store prominently showcased the line, displaying the collection at the front of the store in the Misses section and gave it corner play with three mannequins wearing a purple scoopneck tank dress, a lavender beaded shell top and bubble skirt and a purple ruffle blouse and black ankle pants.

A sales associate said the collection was selling well, from blouses to coats. Smaller sizes were sold out in some styles, such as the long one-button, short-sleeve coat in ash and black; the white, button-down shirt, and long-sleeve, crewneck T-shirts in lavender, ash, white and black.

Because the store was in the midst of inventory week, "Do Not Inventory" signs were plastered on mannequins throughout the collection, prohibiting associates from selling items from the display. That left one customer who couldn't buy the long coat on the mannequin disgruntled and she left empty-handed. The sales associate said those items would be available Sept. 17.

At the Nanuet, N.Y. store, the Simply Vera collection was sandwiched between racks of apparel by AB Studio, Nine & Co., Stamp 10 and Axcess. While a display with three mannequins wearing styles from the collection had a bit of breathing room, the Simply Vera fixtures were so close to racks holding the other brands it was hard to tell things apart. Four shelves with scrunched up Simply Vera sweaters occupied one corner of the display and tops were hung with skirts that didn't match.

During a two-hour period Sunday morning, only four women visited the display.

"They did a terrible job of promoting [Simply Vera] and it's not merchandised particularly well," said Amy Nadel, who traveled from northern New Jersey "where everything is closed on Sunday."

Nadel, who heard about the launch on the Internet, said she was surprised more shoppers hadn't shown up. However the jackets, pants and sweater she saw in a Vogue ad and came to buy were nowhere to be found. Nadel was also disappointed the store didn't have the shirred flyaway jacket in her size. "Considering that over half the women in America are a size 14 and above, they should have more sizes," she added. The line goes from size 4 to 16.

"When I see Simply Vera at Kohl's, I'm like, 'Wow,'" said Mary Lynch. "I can say, 'I'm wearing Vera Wang.'" Lynch, who was shopping for her son, continued: "I didn't hear about [the launch.] I wouldn't necessarily look at ads, but I'd notice it walking by." Picking up a camel-colored long textured coat for $128, she said, "This is adorable. It's cute stuff. What I like about it is that it's not everywhere. I think it will last."

Christine DiRese made a special trip to Kohl's expecting the lines and chaos that sometimes attend designer introductions at moderately priced stores. "It's definitely not Vera, Vera Wang," she said. "But it's nice. The dresses look nice and I like the pintuck tops. I shop at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. The short sleeve black coat is beautiful. The prices are very affordable. She has a few very nice staples for working women. They're all chic."

"We're here for this," said Susan Moroco, referring to Simply Vera. She arrived at the store at around 9:15 a.m. with friend Alex Mikos. "I had it on my calendar."

"I'm surprised," Mikos said, noting the lack of crowds. "We were expecting a huge line." Mikos, who was wearing a black puffed-sleeve blouse from the Libertine collection for Target's Go! International series and jeans, said that most of designer introductions at downtown Target locations sell out so quickly she has to call on her mother to scout suburban locations.

Moroco, who saw early images of Simply Vera in fashion magazines, recalled thinking that "it was gorgeous — simple and romantic with classic Vera Wang cuts. And I loved the rich jewel tones."

Moroco bought a black skirt with satin pleats at the hem, a black satin topper coat, a white blouse with Empire waist, a sleeveless teal pleated top and a pair of black jewel-embellished flats, all for about $400. "I spent more money than I thought possible," she said. "All the little details seemed to be there. I was impressed. We'll see how it wears."

At Kohl's at the Medallion Center near downtown Dallas, the Simply Vera Vera Wang display near the front of the store and the beauty department was empty of shoppers at 10 a.m. Sunday. Some time later, a shopper was browsing the styles. "I like the sophisticated colors and feminine styling that thankfully doesn't include a lot of loud prints," said the shopper, who declined to give her name. "The home selection is very Upper East Side with all the muted tones of purple, vanilla and gray."

Michael Stone, president and chief executive officer of the Beanstalk Group, a brand-licensing agency, believes Simply Vera will resonate with customers. "Vera Wang is not a made-up name," he said. "It's not a tired brand that's being reintroduced at mass. It's a vibrant, robust fashion brand that's living upstairs and succeeding upstairs."

Stone didn't expect a feeding frenzy for the collection because "the Kohl's customer knows it's there and going to be there for a while. It will bring customers to Kohl's."

I completely forgot this was launching on the 9th. Ugh. Curse this flu. :furious:

I'm going to try and get my mother to hit up Kohl's tomorrow for me - I want that gold skirt so badly  I hope its still around in my size. I don't see it on the website at all.

Yeah, its worse in the store....also for shoes they don't have any full length mirrors anywhere in the department so you have to wander over to children's to have any idea what they look like on.
