This is a very inspirational thread. I wasn't sure if Steampunk had its day or not. I think there is much more to be developed in the genre. What I like about steampunk is that it takes influences from the days of prolific invention during the victorian era. I collect antique gadgets of all sorts because I am amazed at the range of creative solutions people once brought to market before mass global market homogenization set in.
I've been wanting to do a steampunk shoot with my designs for quite some time. I am now thoroughly inspired to do so.
Steampunk is great, but 19th-century facial hair isn't, except for sideburns... I am seeing some crazy sh#@! from these Sartorialist subjects on page 5: beards that connect with mustaches that connect with sideburns?? No, no more than sideburns or I'm out...
I loved the idea of Steampunk. There are some great items out there. I really like the goggles. However I feel for a guy they can pull it off to a certain extent with out looking like cosplayer or Halloween costume. Women though can defiantly pull it off with a little more ease and I must say I think women look great in the steampunk style.
It is a little odd that the trend is so ambiguous. Things like LCD monitors fitted into an old suitcase lid (see Warehouse 13 on the SciFi Channel) give me pause because it's such a generic contemporary technology and the suitcase lid doesn't really do much for it. I wonder how one might nail down the ends of "steampunk," or at least break it down into definable sub-genres.
That is awesome, Deborah. It made me laugh, all of the self described steampunk crap that's somehow steampunk because it has some hardware on it or an old piece of a watch is pretty annoying.
