Sugarholics Anonymous

Thanks to everybody for the advice and support! Tomorrow I am going to start mouku's plan; luckily I only drink water, green tea, and peppermint tea so pop has never been a problem. Unfortunately I am not going on vacation until the beginning of June, but hopefully I will have some success anyway. What are the healthiest fruits to eat?
Sorry, mouko, I accidentally misspelled your name and for some reason can't edit my post. Day 1 without sugar is going fine so far but it is so hard!

I don't smoke, I don't do drugs or use farmaceutica, and now that I'm pregnant I don't touch alcohol (and before pregnancy only drank alcohol in moderation).

Sugar is my vice, and I'm a firm believe that all sane people have atleast one vice...^_^

Ok well just a few facts about getting over sugar:
They say it takes 3 days to get over a temporary sugar craving in the short term - ive tried it and if you dont touch ANYTHING with sugar in it for 3 days by the end you start to not actually feel like it that much.
If you can manage that fine and you really want to get over sugar then it takes 21 days to get over it in the long term - i am actually in the process of doing this now.

A few tips tho - try reducing gradually - remember 'deprivation is the mother of failure' so be careful with denying yourself with the whole 21 day thing - this might not be for you. You don't want the oppsite to happen!
Substitution is also a great way - but do not substitute sugar for dried fruit - it is very fattening and jsut becasue it is a form of fruit does not mean it is healthy or no fattening - the same with packaged fruit juices. Honey is a good substitue if you're cooking or in tea.

Hope that helps - after a while sugar will seem

ps. great thread

I am of the same belief :ninja: Mine is caffeine, followed closely by sugar :ninja:

Sugarholics! Wow!
I've been "sworn off" sugar for about thirteen years now. Anything with processed sugar I wont touch. There are lot of good alternatives out there in terms of sweet treats etc, if anyone wants to PM me for details :flower:

Thanks ele! And LariatGal - I am seriously impressed! All day I have been battling inner voices that tell me "It's okay if you want a Frosty/Cadbury egg/bar of chocolate, you deserve it" but so far I have won! I think it really helps having this thread to report back to :flower:

"The Addiction Gene"

I`m one of you...:ninja:

Only one thing helps: iron discipline - ditch it completely & it will get better after 3 days.

But that`s not it...the worst thing is the everlasting battle during Grocery Shopping...I seriously started to cry in front of the Chocolate once... Walking by the Candy is just the hardest thing (especially in our times of "psychological Product Placement" in Supermarkets).

Another thing that has not been mentioned here: "the cause".

These Cravings are often more than "a bad habbit" - studies showed that it has a genetic background. People who crave sugar often have a chemical Mis-Balance in their brain (f.e. lack of Serotonine) and compansate that with sugar. ->"Self-medication"

Other studies showed that people who crave Candy often have close relatives who are Addicts - there is an "Addiction Gene"! In addition to that "compulsive behaviour" is "learned" from experiencing addicted relatives, as well as lack of coping-strategies with Cravings and lack of impulse-control.

Interesting input:flower:
Researches show that being full while grocery shoppping reduced the risk of picking up unhealthy foods.
We basically buy more foods and specially unhealthy foods when we are hungry.

Oh yeah! Same here!

I think it`s just the hunger that builds up to a point where you`re like willing to eat -anything-.

Oh damn, did I have many days in the past where I ate NOTHING all day and then binged on Candy at night.

Theres just one way out: having no sugar around! I finally live on my own so I`m in control of what`s in the house (and I love my "Model fridge" which only contains fruit and Champagne :D )

Hmm maybe you should eat something at 5pm lol but something healthy like a fruit and/or a yoghurt and then you'll be able to wait till dinner time.
In plus it'll make you eat less at dinner. Well it works for me anyway.

lol Heroin_Chic I would love to have a model fridge but unfortunately I still have a year of high school and 2 little brothers who eat nothing but garbage! Thanks Jadee I think I will try that!

^Hope it'll work. And try to drink a lot too. :flower:
Apparently researches (gosh I read too much of these things ) show that we often mistake thirst for hunger .

Really?! I never would have thought that, but it's good to know :flower: I think I might finally have the motivation I need to kick my butt into shape (as far as nutrition and exercise are concerned) because I just found out that 1 of the top worldwide agencies is interested in me! :woot: But I don't want to jinx it or sound like I'm bragging (I'm just really really excited and had to tell someone or I would explode!) so I'll shut up now!

:woot::woot::woot: is all I say lol

i made it through yesterday (i  reduced sugar yogurt)...and so far today i've been good  :woot: B)

I am joining up too. When I was little we were not allowed to have candy. The minute I was out on my own till now I have always had a sugar stash hid away somewhere. Somedays I don't even touch it but I feel better knowing it's there. I know this sounds a little sicko but members who love sugar and junk food will know how I feel.

I'm working on it too. Usually, I'm craving sugar all the time, but eating fruit instead really helps. I haven't had candy for a week now and that is... quite impressive for me!

i am exactly the same way, model_mom, as is my mother - but i'm trying to get her to be healthier with me. i didn't even have sugar until i turned 1 yr old, and then i hated it:yuk: ! but now...well, i'm a sugarholic...i have read that it's better to face your temptations and resist them, so i tried keeping my sugar stash around, but that completely backfired because after a day or so of no sugar i would break down and eat everything  HepburnDivine, that is awesome:flower: ! i hope i will be able to say the same thing in a few days :D
