Oh and there is another one going around who states that 3/4 of the win were either French or related to/talking about France (Hugo, Midnight in Paris) etc. It's even a bigger deal than last time with Marion

This must be the first time in years that I´m happy with ALL the wins.
My wishlist came true

chaky,i'm sort of on the same page as you....although my curiosity kept me intrigued,i honestly was bored the whole night. bitterly disappointed none of the films i was keen on received no recognition, especially "kevin". even the indie spirits the previous evening shut it out, which was a huge surprise given it was such a hit on the indie front. and a couple weeks ago our independent theatre/cinema was having a special "art house" screening of "martha marcy may marlene" and i got to see it and i was very impressed. definitely deserved a little more attention than it got.

^I'm the same.. I think 2011 was a great year for film but it doesn't show when you look at the nominees.. there were so many films and performances that were completely overlooked

I would have loved to see some love for MMMM (seriously not even editing?), Drive (though not the performances), 50/50 (the screenplay!) and Take Shelter (Michael Shannon)

I would say 50/50 was my overall favorite film with Drive being the best audiovisual experience

I also can't see The Artist surviving the test of time.. though I'm not sure what other movie in that lineup would

I can't express my disappointment after last night's Oscars.

 That French letter is so dumb to me for some reason. The Artist wasn't even about France!

I'm sorry guys, I had to post this :D :D

I agree with you guys, 2011 was a GREAT year for movies, but you wouldn't know it watching the Oscars last night. What they ended up nominating and awarding seemed more mediocre than most years. Drive (I watched it again and loved it, lol), MMMM, Melancholia and Take Shelter are four of the best films of the year - completely shut out. The Tree of Life, best surprise on the nomination morning, came away empty handed (not even the Cinematography :(). Moneyball and Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy got some nominations, but each too went home empty handed. At least A Separation took one award. Then there are stunning performances in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Tyrannosaur, The Guard, again, nowhere to be found.

Instead we got a love fest with Hugo and The Artist (both terribly overrated), which was just basically Academy petting itself on the back for the great movie business they have.

ETA: That picture of Angelina kills me every time, lol.

Like everyone else has said, 2011 was a pretty great year in film but the Oscars didn't really show this. I'll admit I am pleased that The Artist did well last night, the same with Octavia Spencer but so many other films deserved to be nominated/win. Please, tell me I wasn't the only one who was a little pissed about how many awards Hugo won. I know it's suppose to be quite good but still... at this point it feels like people are just kissing up to Marty Scorsese. I felt like yelling at the screen, give other people a chance (haha... I probably get too involved in award season)! Looking back at the films that were nominated this year, so many of them ended up walking away empty handed, it's actually pretty sad how little diversity their was.

Also, I have to say, I was really annoyed with the category for Best Original Song. I still cannot believe that they only nominated two songs. There were some pretty great ones this year; Lay Your Head Down (Albert Nobbs), The Living Proof (The Help), or even Masterpiece (W.E.). Yet, none of them garnered nominations and two other sort of silly movies were nominated. And as my mother put it last night, "I'd be embarrassed to win in a category where you were only competing against one other movie."

And, MyNameIs, I'm with you, Drive should have been nominated! I'm still a bit bitter that it wasn't. Anyways, the Oscars were predictable however I was pleased with Jean Dujardin and Octavia Spencer's wins. Both are too cute and really deserved to win. I was rooting for Viola Davis to win Best Actress but I can't really complain because it's Meryl! And it's impossible not to love her. Anyways... let's hope that next years Oscar's is more exciting! ^_^

I don't think 2011 was that great at all for movies, I think that it was "good" but I don't think anything is memorable.

YoninahAliza, I don't know why the first two songs weren't nominated, but I do remember reading that "Masterpiece" was disqualified because it was the second song played during the credits or something. I think the entirety of a song has to be played within the movie itself or it's the first piece of music once the credits start rolling. Madonna should have read the rules for that one.
