The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #1

^ Actually they had the same inseam (or so she claimed), which was the problem ... my, and nearly everyone else's, legs are actually two different lengths. On me, the whole left side of my body is bigger ... so in that case, one would think the left leg should have been shorter, when in fact it was the right.

I had them angled up in the front (shoe cut) so more of the detail of my shoes will show, and what I thought was that they angled the right, but failed to angle the left. But I didn't really try to diagnose the problem, I just took them back to be fixed.

I really can't wait until I am done uni, when I can get rid of some of my sweatshirts that are essential for the town that I'm in for school. It is so unbelievably cold in the winter and when I'm spending 12+ hours on campus a day studying the only thing I seem to wear are hoodies and sweatshirts. They take up so much closet space and are so uninspiring.

I'm really looking to invest in some nice knits this winter that can be used to transition from uni life to work life as I'm graduating in a year!

i come to this thread occaisionally and look up to those of you who are able to invest in a few amazing things and ignore that there is so much more to buy.

until recently i just bought my clothes in h&m and zara and that likes.
but ever since american apparel came to my city i started buying my basics there (needless to say that i really stocked up on basics -4 white tops/shirt 4 black tops/shirts...)
but after having a basis-wardrobe i now want to get only a few statment pieces each season. well, we'll see if i'm able of doing this.

however two things so far where quality went over quantity:
amazing black ballet flats -i have been looking forever to get the perfect pair after my old ones had both of the soles broken from one side to the other
i finally found the right ones for 50€ (marked down from 120€ ^_^ )
and yesterday i bought a bag from mandarina duck
same as with the shoes i have been looking for the perfect black leather bag that i can carry my uni-stuff (lots of books) in.
i usually wouldn't have spent 150€ on a bag -but this one seems so satisfy all the needs i put into a bag. (and again i got it on sale -original price was 230€!!)

so. conclusio  the first time that, during sales, i looked for pieces that will last...

Nice purchase...their bags are so well made and take a lot of punishment.

The only items I have on my F/W list are a pair of black (patent?) flats with a bow and a few knit sweaters to wear when it gets really cold.

Does anyone buy items that can be worn in more than one way? Such as the cozy cardigan from DKNY or the circle scarf from A.A.

I do, although I do not have the two particular items you have mentioned (I do want the scarf though), I have a number of pieces that can be worn several ways, and my favourite ones are; cardigan from Ilaria Nistri that I've found 4 ways of wearing so far - Complex geometries dress & tank - Annhagen vest - Ronit Zilkha wrap.
The majority tend to be winter like materials, but at least it gives me variety to play with when it comes to not buying too many pieces per season.

I haven't really seen many items for guys that are like that... = (

I am failing the 4-5 rule completely this season. I just bought a Benetton wrap around t shirt in white, a striped sleeveless top, couple of singlets from Sisley in yellow ochre and hot pink for layering. But the white wrap can be worn casually and to work. The singlets can be used under my black tops. Especially black and hot pink is in.

I've never realized how difficult the 4-5 item rule is in the fall/winter seasons  So many layers, wools, tweed and cashmere to consider.

But some things I'm leaning towards this year...

BDG convertible strapless dress
Be worn over as a top, skirt, and layered in cardigans, sweaters and jackets for f/w
Skirts in general, maybe in a tweed material
Tights (sometimes doubled for extra warmth), a boot and a chunky knit has always seemed to work out for me in the past while.
Black trousers
Had a lovely (black and navy) straight leg trousers last year paired with a boottie or flat, can be worn with almost anything for a top and keeps the legs warm. Though this year looking into a more relaxed, loose fitted black trouser, I find they can lengthen and compliment short legs like myself.
Shrunken jackets and cardigans
I love a cardigan and/or jacket that sits perfectly at the hips, I'm quite short so this usually appeals a bit better for me than the longer cardigans hitting at the bum. And great for harem pants I might be adventuring in this season.
Collarless blouses/shirts
From experience, short necks don't appreciate big collars so collarless seems to be the answer. Maybe in a linen, cotton mix material, nothing too stiff and in a creamy soft hue. Grays/Blacks work so well with creams and beige's, softens the inky look I think.

And the shoes of course, anything with a wedge and sturdy heel would do wonders for the cold winters here. Not to forget scarves... not that I need more exactly :ninja::P

Nemova I love your avatar! Go Sheldon!! (And not to be OT, I'm already planning on 4 pieces for next autumn: 2 cords, 1 vest and 1 top all from J.Crew!)

@aldn Mentioned this a page back but this convertible strapless dress can be worn as a simple dress, skirt, top and layer it with almost anything. Just ordered it yesterday in nude and gray, can't wait to see what the options of dressing it there are ^_^

I haven't posted in awhile, but I think I have made some progress. Actually, I've noticed that I feel more chic and true to myself now that I buy less, but more carefully.

After some serious damage during the Saks fall sale madness of last year I decided to try and only get 4-5 major or statement purchases a season, basically only things over $200 or so. For the most part this has been working really well for me.

Spring's purchases were 2 pairs of McQueen patent shoes with little skulls, one in black with a heel, and a pair of burgundy flats. A Burberry jacket, which will sadly be going back to Ebay at some point, and a grey LV Sprouse scarf.

Summer's purchases were a black Balenciaga First, Missoni flats, Tory Burch silver flats - wore out a pair of last summer. My husband bought me a Chanel reissue tote, but I sort of count that.

Fall is going to be hard. I love fall and fall clothing. So far I got a pair of Dolce & Gabbana black patent heels on sale and a Tom Binn's necklace (on order). I may sucumb to the Alexander Wang Coco bag madness, since it fits my aesthetic so well. There is a Chanel necklace I might get, since its black w/black pearls, and I'd love a pair of motorcycle style boots.

Chloe made a pair I'm eyeing. The price just about kills me though. Any thoughts?

Just got a great deal on Brooks Brothers pants on Ebay for fall and I'd like a dress for work and another pair of jeans. Otherwise I feel pretty good, since last year I finally found two fantastic jackets and a bunch of other fall basics for myself.

Tonight I'm going to do something scary, I'm going through all summer clothing and putting them out in a pile to see what I've worn and what I haven't. I moved about a month ago and honestly want to only keep things that 1 - I can fit into and 2 - I actually wear and feel good about wearing!

^ If you love the boots, I'd go for it  I think shoes & boots you really love are completely worth it ... I myself always buy the originals. And congratulations

I love those boots too. I was actually eyeing them too, though the heel is a bit too high for my everyday schedule.

One of my t-shirts died today, and I'm at the point where I need every one, so I went to go replace it with my Nordstrom Note (loyalty program reward GC). Well they didn't have any t-shirts I liked, so I ended up with a great Michael Michael Kors silk blouse in a black and cream abstract print that I can wear with black jeans, or dress up. Very flatteringly cut, but more than I had in mind to spend ... I need summer blouses, so this will come in handy too.
