The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #1

Does anyone buy items that can be worn in more than one way? Such as the cozy cardigan from DKNY or the circle scarf from A.A.

Hi!

I just bought black merino cozy cardigan from DKNY. That makes me so innovative, it´s so perfect for my wardrobe!

I've been pretty good this season, and sold/donated almost all of the clothes that didn't fit me, or that I never wore.
I bought around ten things (some were basics, though), but here's the things I wear constantly, that were perfect purchases for my wardrobe:

5 Purchases for Spring/Summer

Jil Sander Patent Flats - $125 (ebay)

timber ~ love the simplicity and elegance of everything.

grey is a great color for flats.

Though I fail miserably at sticking to the 4-5 pieces plan I'm definitely buying less...and putting more thought into prospective purchases. I just bought this cashmere/silk top from Acne which is a great "basic"...now if I could only limit myself to only buying 4 more things for Fall

Absolutely adore those Chloe boots you posted Salomelovesjohn... However, they were not at the top of my wishlist as I tried them on and found them to be to high for everyday wear.

I have been doing a lot of autumn/winter shopping already - as I am living with the threat of moving from Paris (which is for me a shopper's paradise) and going to London (which is my home city but is not so nice IMO for shopping) hanging over my head.

So far I have purchased -
Black wrap coat from Miu Miu
Dark grey herringbone tweed jacket from Bottega Veneta
Bordeaux classic cashmere cardi from Prada
Black with navy stripe mariner boat neck sweater from Lutz & Patmos
Chloe flat boots in tan
Zara strappy boots in rusty brown with a low heel
1 pair of Acne Hex jeans in mid grey
1 pair of Acne Hep jeans in dark grey
2 sprouse leopard scarves from LV in rose pale and bleu nuit

This is so bad when I look at the list I have broken the 4-5 rule! Please tell me accessories, jeans and footwear doesn't count and then I will be a little more content!

Still on my wishlist are black leather skinny jeans (not sure, not sure!?) as I would want to spend some $$ on them for a great fit and longevity but hope this isn't going to be a flash in the pan trend. However, I really need an alternative to jeans which I live in as skirts and dresses I find to be too fussy on all but the hottest of days! Also a chloe top with crystals in grey and maybe the Chloe boots but these things can wait as they aren't every day things - I rarely dress "up" as I work from home and had black tie overkill when I was at Uni!

I would def say basics like jeans etc do not count... has to be statement type pieces like your tweed jacket etc...

Hope you are doing good!?!? PM me for a catchup if you have the time!

WSG x

Thanks! Actually, it was a SS09 piece so it's currently on sale. I was lucky and found it for 70% off...I've seen it on other sites for between 30-50% off (original price was around $275).

This was the perfect thread for me to stumble upon right before I start editing my closet. This is my least favorite chore to do but I'm about to move and I need to cut out all the filler stuff I never wear.

I'm really starting to buy into the whole idea of Quality over Quantity. In the past year I have started buying higher quality items and I find that I don't tire of them so quickly. They have lasting appeal... and they last! What a concept!

^ I'm starting on my editing process as well. A couple of days ago, the bar in my closet from which I hang all my stuff from fell down (oh!!!!) so I thought maybe, mayyybe, I had too much stuff in there. So, alas, I'm forced to edit. I'm not looking forward to it because I'm very attached to a lot of pieces that I don't wear often and I'm not sure how much I want to pare down, although I love this thread and the whole idea of a more functional wardrobe.

^ Another one of those subtle messages from the universe

You could try giving yourself an assignment to wear one of those pieces a week ... find new ways to incorporate them.

ok well i started meeting a few french people in my city and i am in there with them and able to observe their lifestyles...

i do notice they wear the same thing several times a week

but what i find actually strange is in the beginning of this thread, people thinking it disgusting to wear something twice in a row. and i was thinking they were just worried about people seeing them in the same outfit, but as i kept reading they actually believed it was not good hygiene! and then with some friends i stayed over at their place, they too were quite odd about wearing the same thing more than once

i don't know if maybe people build up 'odours' quickly
but for myself i can wear the same thing over and over and not wash it.. and there's still no smell! i've even had a shirt i wore out in the heat-- i just hung it in the middle of the room to air it out and it was fine the next day
which surprised me too, since usually the smell of the sun seeps into the fabric but not this time. some of my other clothes also keep in the smell of the detergent for about a week or so (lavender  )

i am sure i have worn a shirt more even more than a week without laundering it and still not experiencing anything bad. and i have a good sense of smell because many people tell me i can taste things in dishes they cook up, tiny amounts of spice or lemon grass for example they put in by accident

funny i am actually helping a person from france create a 4-5 french wardrobe right now XD
formal clothes though

good idea fashionista-ta, I'll do that!

gius I don't think it's bad to wear the same things repeatedly but when it's skirts, pants, jackets...it seems one can get away with not washing those items after just one wear. But I just can't do it with shirts, hahaha, I'm not as lucky with shirts as you.

I hardly ever sweat or develop odours :ninja: so my tops or shirts never smell after I wear them...and I don't wash my clothes very often because it's bad for the environment, bad for the clothes plus detergent makes my skin itch.

that's interesting then.. two cases.. i guess it just depends on the person

how do you guys feel about dry clean-only clothes for this 4-5 piece wardrobe?

i've met some people who rarely or don't even wash their clothes. especially if it's expensive clothes. they say the fabric never feels the same after washing

The clothes I wear out of the house mostly go to the cleaners--and not every time I wear them, on an as-needed basis.
