The 4-5 piece French wardrobe #1

for those who are 'cutting down'
their wardrobe

what do you do with the stuff you've weeded out?

^I think this is the problem for me. I already cleaned out my closet twice this year and had PLENTY of stuff to sell (from the past 6-7 years..yes, this thread was one of my inspirations too ^_^). I 'donated' the highstreet stuff and 'middle market ' clothing like (Diesel, replay etc.) to someone I know who gives it to people in need. The more high end stuff was actually a problem. I have an ebay account but to be honest, I don't have time to sell all this clothing (it is a LOT). I tried a consignment store in my town to sell my a/w stuff, and believe me, there were good pieces and big names; like new Jil Sander shoes, Fendi baguette, Ysl bag, in fact every piece was very high end (only a few pieces from cacharel). Well, they were so called 'specialised' in high end clothing but in the end I almost got nothing (compared to ebay). I know, in England, they have this trade fairs or maybe you can sell your clothes to other fashion lovers. I think that would be great because frankly, most of the time those consignment stores don't know anything about the real value of big names and on top of that keep most of it for themselves.

^^ Firstly, my younger sister gets the pick of what she wants. Then either its goes to a charity shop or to the clothes recyling bank. (Bearing in mind all of my clothes are either high street or no name vintage, if I had any high end things to give away they would be ebayed!)

I donate almost everything to Goodwill/Salvation Army. On the rare occasion I have something that's higher end, I try to pass it on to a good friend, relative, or coworker who'd appreciate it. I'm too busy to deal with Ebay, and there's relatively few places here where I'd get any money for the pieces.

if any of you really want to get rid of high end clothes let me know, and i'll pm you my adress. you can send all in :innocent:

I have my sister and my mom go through the clothes first if they want anything, and then I donate it : )

the chloe heeled bikerish boots first mentioned by salomelovesjohn. ...so I decided to return them and get the Chloe boots which were cheaper and fitted so much more easily with my day to day wardrobe.

We are now Chloe twins! ^_^ I just picked them up from Intermix over the weekend. I'm a US 8.5 and ended up in a 38, but it fit really well so I guess that's good! I found the Chloe boots really comfortable for the heel height, I just have to step outside my comfort zone and wear them with something other than boot cut jeans....:innocent:

^What?! You MUST show those gorgeous boots off, what a shame it is hiding them under jeans :(

^ they look wow with skinny jeans and leggings! I agree you can't hide them under trouser hems. I'm no longer a heel person but these are so comfortable they won me over.

^^
Lol, I know, but my problem is that I'm rather pear shaped and live in horreur of skinny jeans. I do realize though that I need some leggings or something to go with these.

Salomelovesjohn - don't miss out on a potentially cool look. Why don't you try on various makes of skinny jean, some are definitely better than others and play with proportions too. A body skimming longer, tunic top or jacket that hits just below the widest part of your thighs looks great with a narrow fitting pants.

Personally, I tend to favour styles like Acne Hex which aren't overly skinny and don't grab your legs all the way down to the ankle but simply skim the lower leg and ankle balancing out the wider upper leg.

^^
Thanks Grill, I think I might take a trip to Intermix again and talk to the nice SA who helped me with the shoes. I do need some wardrobe updates to really show them off. I also much prefer the skinny jeans that aren't overlly skinny on the calf.

I used to live in little dresses, black tights, and combat boots as a teen. Perhaps I could resurect that look. :P Of course I do live in DC, not NYC, unfortunately. (DC fashion is more staid).

I love this thread, since I've started buying less but more seasonally and more at full price I've gotten things that I really use more and my wardrobe is more compact, with less "holes." I'm finding, for me at least, that 1-2 pairs of the right shoes a season works out better than 5-6 pairs at the sale rack at the end of the season.

^ So true about the shoes ... I find that when there's something good on the sale rack, it's often because it lacks versatility ... lately the economy has done something to change that, but stores have also really reined in their buying now, so it's evened out ...

really nice Chloe boots salomelovesjohn and grill! You guys will get so much wear out of them.

I love this thread as well, although I'm not always great at sticking with the philosophy! I'm reminded by ta-ta's beautiful post in the winter coat thread to really be more careful about my shopping ... as she put it, take only what you will use, which applies to pretty much everything! My problem is that I get tempted by beautiful pieces that lack versatility ... a really pretty dress, for example, that I would wear only a few times. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but I have enough! I personally really want to focus on filling out the staples in my wardrobe for the next few seasons, the things that I will wear to death. And at least for a while, I want to focus on separates, as I think you get the most wear out of these items. I think focusing on staples will also help me avoid mistakes ... items that are beautiful but perhaps not really my style or have no real place in my wardrobe. Buying only staples can get a little boring perhaps, but I already have plenty of "special" items in my wardrobe that I should try to appreciate and get more wear out of.

So far, I bought one short coat, almost like a blazer and a pair of suede ankle boots. I'm due for a new purse, and I'm aiming for the most practical style for my lifestyle, a cross body bag (no fuss for handling a baby!). I bought a pretty silk dress that I've decided to return, since I just don't think I will get that much wear out of it. Oh, and almost forgot, I'd like a new pair of jeans, since I'm unlikely to ever fit into my old pairs again! Besides some basic tshirts and tights, I'm hoping that will be it for me this season. But of course I will be tempted by many other things!

Hey, it looks like I won't have to go 4-5 piece French wardrobe for uni after all - I got the biggest room in our student accomodation house!

Bought PJs on sale at Nordstrom ... had some bite the dust this week. Capri length so I don't have to mess with alterations ...
