The Acne Thread

Does anybody have a list of foods/liquids which cause break-outs? I've found that vinegar causes me to have break-outs over periods of times and act as a trigger.
On the same note, what foods can help prevent a break-out?

i have pretty acne prone oily skin but lately my skin has been really really clear, and i think its because for the past month or so i've been trying to eat vegetarian/organic whenever i can instead of fast food on my lunch break, and also i've been drinking a glass of carrot juice a day on most days, and drinking tea instead of sugary drinks. i think the carrot juice really really helped because of the vitamin A.... usually i have at least one zit or whiteheads or a breakout every once in a while but nope, lately its been pretty damn clear! haven't had to wear much makeup at all!

oh and also i read that when you wash your face, you REALLY have to use some force and massage your facial muscles to get the blood flow going and to proper cleanser your skin, so i've been doing that and i think thats helped as well :)

^I wouldn't use too much force so that you don't risk doing any damage, but I do think it's true that most people assume cleansers just aren't working, when really they're spending no time actually encouraging it into the skin. Something really gentle like Cetaphil will work wonders without doing any harm if you spend more time and apply a little more pressure while cleansing.

^whats the main ingredient in cetaphil? is it salicylic acid? i'm thinking about trying it...my current cleanser (clean and clear pore scrub with the "Smooth! Round! Microscrubbers!") feels nice while scrubbing but i find that it makes my face feel relaly dry and tight afterward. i hear cetaphil is really gentle?

No, Cetaphil doesn't have SA...In fact, Cetaphil made my skin a lot worse. It doesn't foam and it left a film on my skin even after rinsing.

Cetaphil is gentle, but in my opinion, overrated.

Have you tried Purpose?

^Cetaphil is definitely for people who don't have much acne.. It's very gentle and more for people who worry about irritation, in my opinion. It's decent, but probably a little overrated (I agree).

At the moment, I'm loving some sort of mud cleanser that my sister brought back from the Dead Sea area when she went to Israel. I've definitely fallen into a really good little routine (for me) and haven't had any problems with my skin for a while.

I can rec Joesoef Skin Care. They have a great sulfur based line. If you go to their website and request samples, they send you a nice sized box full of products to try for no charge!

I don't know if this is just my crazy idea, but I sometimes wash my face with salt water to help eliminate the pimples. I find the salt dries up the pimple. I take a cotton pad, soak it in a salt & water solution, then wipe my face with it. I leave it to dry for awhile then use toner in the end to wash away the salt. Be careful because this IS salt, and if you have open wounds it will hurt. My skin is not sensitive so it works for me, I don't know if I can recommend it to anyone else.

I have started using baby face soap from Lush, and then using the Lush Tea Tree water toner.

This has had a nice effect on my cheeks, but my chin is quite bad and my forehead is getting better. I suposse it just takes time.

I have an issue! I often get my eyebrows waxed because well... I'd have a unibrow otherwise... and the stuff they put on my skin afterwards to moisturize the skin always makes me break out on my forehead. I have really sensitive skin so the wax makes me turn very red, thus the moisturizer is kind of necessary. Am I just destined to forever have pimples on my forehead? Or do I have to live my life with a unibrow? :-P haha

my skin was turning into CRAP recently with all the stress and transition i was going under...my skin was showing it BIG TIME....cystic acne is horrible...so i upped my regimen....i dont take in sugar.....i take like 30 mg of zinc (it helps the skin healing process, i read that on www.skintactix.com) and i started using skintactix every night....my skin has improved about 85% in the last month...i love that stuff....it doesnt just clear the acne...it heals the weakened and traumatized skin so its no longer suceptable to infection.....its a lil pricey, admittedly....its like $47-60 with shipping depending on what kit/products you buy-BUT SO WORTH IT!!

i think its crazy, i only have to buy this stuff like every year and a half, or whenever i flare up...i LOVE it

as soon as the acne goes away, im going to buy the scar kit i always get from university medical... that is another awesome product....and only $20 for something that helps pockmarks and hyperpigmentation fabulously! AWESOME

GUYS! CHECK IT OUT!! www.skintactix.com

Thanks for the recommendation, especially since your acne is stress-related like mine is. :flower:

I'm going to try it when I have some spare cash.

^or on your nose too...I would like to know. But I've been using the same product "ProActive" for 6 years now and just recently I've been breaking out so much even when I use this product daily (once a day) like I've done for years. I did start taking birth control pills that could be one possibility as to why my face is breaking out...or could it be that my face is getting used to the product? I was thinking of trying the new clean and clear kit...anyone tried that?

I have a lot of acne scars on my face and it sucks. :yuk: How can I get rid of them?

Hope this helps, but I would recommend you to ask a dermatologist who could prescribe you the right stuff for quicker results. :flower:

Natural Remedies for Treating Scars

skincare.lovetoknow.com

Many people swear by vitamin E oil. Either they use the oil purchased from a health food store or break open a gel cap and apply the oil that way. A number of dermatologists warn, however, that topical vitamin E is unproved for this sort of treatment and has in fact been observed to worsen an acne scar.
Other natural remedies that seem to be safer and more effective include camellia oil. This is a light cooking oil not commonly used in the States, pressed from the camellia seed. It is available either online or in natural food markets. Many users attest that massaging it gently into the scars twice a day will make acne scars vanish, although the results will not be noticeable for many months. After a year of solid use, however, a number of scars - even older, deeper scars - may disappear.
Emu oil, derived from the Australian flightless bird, has also been known to help lighten acne scars. Anyone wanting to use these oils should be mindful, however, that they must go lightly and massage thoroughly, because oil can also promote acne. These oils are generally reported to be non-acne causing, but it’s good to be aware.
Whole milk plain yogurt can also help lighten acne scars. A yogurt mask contains AHAs, so it is healing and stimulating, as well as lightening. For further lightening and treatment, mix fresh lemon juice into the mask. This gives your skin a blast of pure vitamin C and lemon juice is a natural bleach.

Bleaching Acne Scars

Traditionally, what makes acne scars vanish is topical bleach, like prescription-strength hydroquinone. This has been very effective for a number of users, but people also report burning and even deeper reddening of the scar. Furthermore, it may be associated with more serious medical problems, although this is still under debate and study. If a dermatologist suggests you try it, ask to use a sample first to determine your skin’s initial response.
Prescription-strength retinoic acid (Retin-A) has also been seen to make acne scars vanish, along with tackling the active acne itself. Be aware that when using Retin-A, you will look worse before you look better, because skin will initially be very red and dry. However, this should only last two weeks or so.

Peels and Lasers

Lactic and glycolic acid peels have been shown to improve the appearance of acne scars, as well as discourage further breakouts. They won’t be effective while you’re still having big active breakouts, but a series of peels once the acne is under some control will brighten skin and tighten pores.
For severe scarring, laser treatment has been shown to be effective. This is expensive, but if you’ve tried everything else, it might be a way to go.
