Can you guys help me?

My acne is gone and I'm not breaking out anymore, but I have some areas of clogged pores/little bumps and they're driving me insane. I'm gonna get an AHA product if I can, but what do you guys recommend for this?? They're so stubborn.

My skin has been breaking out like nobody's business ever since I got laid off from my job back in October. But it's not the zits themselves that bother me, it's the dark brown spots they leave behind. They take so long to go away and make it look MUCH worse than it really is.

I did a bit of investigation for a product that would effectively treat current pimples, prevent new ones from forming, AND fade the old spots. I've been using mandelic acid to help with the spots, but I can't stand the flaking skin on top of everything else. I just end up looking like a mess. I did find something promising that I'm going to try on myself next week.

Niacinamide (aka vitamin B3). Paula Begoun's site (www.cosmeticscop.com) has this to say about Niacinamide:

Topical application of niacinamide has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, as well as stimulate micro-circulation in the dermis.

2% niacinamide was shown in one small study to be more effective than petrolatum (Vaseline) for reducing water loss from skin and increasing its hydration levels.

Procter & Gamble, whose Olay skin-care line sells several products with niacinamide, published a double-blind study involving 50 women. The subjects used a product containing 5% niacinamide (whether that amount is included in Olay's niacinamide products was not mentioned) for a period of 12 weeks. Results included an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, skin discolorations, less redness, a reduction in sallowness, and improved elasticity.

Another study seconded P&G's findings that niacinamide is a helpful ingredient to address skin discolorations. It appears that topical niacinamide has an inhibitory effect on the transfer of melanosomes to skin cells, thus it can interrupt the process that causes irregular pigmentation to form.

In addition to niacinamide's growing reputation as an excellent barrier repair and skin lightening agent, some existing animal studies and in vitro studies on human fibroblasts (cells that produce connective tissue such as collagen) have demonstrated that niacinamide may have a mitigating effect on skin tumors.

Fewer studies exist to examine niacinamide's anti-acne properties. An older study compared a gel containing 4% niacinamide with the prescription acne medicine Clindamycin and found it works just as well as the prescription, but without the risk of antibiotic resistance."

There are lots of info to be found with a simple Google search regarding niacinamide if you want to know more.

But to use it, it's as simple as buying high quality B3 capsule supplements and vigorously mixing it with a non-acidic base in the palm of your hands (non-acidic meaning it's pH neutral and doesn't contain vitamin C - can be water, serum, Visine, etc). Then just smooth it over your face and give it a gentle massage, let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Rinse it off or use a cream or sunscreen over it to blend it in if you prefer to have it on all day.

okay so i havent been breaking out but i have some reviews for you guys that i thought might be helpful

i got the Biore Detoxifying Daily Face Scrub and i really dont like it. i normally dont like creamy type face cleansers in general but this is especially bad because i feel like it never rinses clean . it is oil free but i see that one of the ingredients is a wax...so that is probably the culprit. i dont think the residue is a good thing, im scared it will make it break out if i continue using it. also as a scrub, it was gentle to the point of ineffectiveness. there is more cream than scrubbing particles, i think you could use everyday and it still wont do its job. the scent is kinda meh, i dont know how to describe it. the scent seems okay at first but if you try to smell it you get a whiff some weird musk undertones. and the smell always stayed on my hands, yuck!

i might repurchase Clean & Clear Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub, its also oil free but in gel form which i prefer and rinses clean. i got a sample of this with the oil absorbing sheets that i ended up giving to my sister because i dont know i bought those because i dont have oily skin. i guess i bought because they looked like it would be fun ;) so this scrub is a nice mild one that tingles, not a rough as homemade aspirin & honey masks(which you shouldnt do more than once a week). the only thing i dont like about this is the scent is kind of mediciney but it doesnt linger on my hands so im assuming it doesnt on my face. i used the whole sample and it didnt make me break out.

I know it's different for everyone, but I started BC a month 1/2 ago and felt no negative side affects whatsoever. And I was SO nervous starting them because of all the horror stories I'd heard. Two weeks in I did have an initial breakout which is only now calming down (with the help of Ziana--really good stuff, BTW).

But with the BC pills, right from the start my skin was about 70% less oily. So I know it's working to sort my hormones out, blocking the androgens, etc.

Anyway I just wanted to share my positive experience so that you don't think, based on what you've read, that BC is all bad :flower:
That's awesome! Everyone always reads about the bad effects of birth control and honestly, I am still quite fearful of it myself. After reading reviews on acne.org it seems like if you breakout severely and it is due to androgens then it would help it a great deal. But if you only breakout lightly then it makes it worse and people don't really understand that.

I just bought Clean and Clear Persel-5 Gel to see if it really as good as Paula says. ahhhhh

I have had no negative effects from birth control i think its up to the person..
I went to the doctor today and she gave me some anti biotics which is the 3rd step in trying to fix acne.. has anyone been on doxy? or also known as doryx?

okay so the Biore scrub did make me break out but its minor. i think because i stopped using it in time! one small pimple thats easy to cover with makeup. im just mad because i was thinking "lets try something new" and now look what happens. i'll just stick to what works which is my basic C&C cleanser and homemade aspirin-honey scrub only when i need it.

I haven't heard of these, how long have you been put on them for?

My skin is a little confused. It's pretty good at the minute, but I'm getting the odd small whitehead that just won't dissapear, and when it does, either another one pops up or it returns :ninja:

Well the doctor said it takes about 3 to 6 months to see improvements so hopefully I'm 3 months lol There are some side effects but i havent had any yet but its mainly just an upset stomach and maybe nausea but you have to have the tablet with a meal..

I have the opposite problem with taking them, mine have to be taken on a completely empty stomach and since I started them in September I don't think I've been able to manage that  Good luck ^_^

I'm on minocyline and it doesn't matter if you take them with or without food which is such a relief - maybe you should ask about switching to it? :)

Well it doesnt bother me because I take it just after breakfast.. I think it just helps to keep the stomach calm.. its taken yeas fr a doctor to tell me about this one so I'm not going to change it now hehe She said its the step before a dermatologist and then roaccutane so lets hope all goes well :)

hmm. It's probably too soon to tell, but my skin looks really good today, with no new breakouts whatsoever in the past few days. I think the vitex is working! I hope I don't jinx myself by saying that now. Haha. *crosses fingers*

I have no idea where to post this, but I'm having some really bad skin issues! I usually never get pimples so I have no idea what to do... Last weekend I got my eyebrows threaded (I usually just pluck) & the lady said that I should also do the forehead area so that it would look super smooth, I was like okay whatever, so she did it. The next day, I wake up & I have SO many pimples all over the area that she threaded. Literally like, 30 tiny zits. & they still haven't gone away, 5 days later! What should I do? I have no idea how I should treat it, bc my regular cleanser isn't doing anything for me!

roisin, i guess your skin wasn't clean enought, so all the dirt which was on you skin at that time got into the open pores... I have only thing to say, don't pick those pimples, also, don't use anti-acne produkcts on them... let them heal by their own and other time before threadening, make sure that yout skin is clean :flower:

^Agreed, don't do anything. It's just irritation, and I know some people's skin reacts the same way when they get threaded. if you must, I'd recommend some aloe vera gel because it's gentle.

i mixed lemon juice with tea tree facial wash from body shop and put it as a mask on my face for 15 minutes. did great!

^ I'm using a glycolic acid cream right now, hopefully that helps. Witch hazel is supposed to calm redness too...I'm in the same boat as you, so I'm looking for things also. I read that if you mix together egg whites and a bit of lemon juice and use it as a mask daily, that the red marks will fade.
