The Acne Thread

I swear by shea butter as well. I'm glad to hear you like it!
As for the smell, some places sell mango shea butter lotions, or apricot but I would stick with the unrefined personally. I actually don;t mind the smell. Shea butter is heavy but it doesn't clog your pores at all and absorbs directly into the skin, instead of laying on top of it and not allowing the skin to breathe. A lot of people also use it in their hair, post-shaving. It is truly a miracle! My son has a slight case of eczema and the shea butter has reallly worked!

As for the scarring, don't expect fast results, but I had a sizable scar on my knee from hiking and noticed some improvement like 9 months later or so....to the point where I have to hold my leg up to the light to see it...not too sure about an operation scar and it always depends on your skin as well......

 Ok... here is the story...

I bought into the african shea butter story... so I went and got some...

and OMG... after just 2 days use... I see my skin got better already, alot of my pimple scar has lighten a lot... Thanks Theory... I am hooked... except.. I don't like my shea butter smell.. mine is unrefined so it has a weird smell, but bearable.

Works great ... I wonder how long it will take to work on the operation scars...

One really interesting thing I did notice is that I usually get acne because the moisturizer I use is too oily. BUT with shea butter... it is pretty heavy.. but for some weird reason.. it is actually my answer to the cure of my acne... it actually helps to calm it down...

ABSOLUTE LOVE IT

Chemical peel burns my skin... ugh

A new acne treatment call Blue Light photothereapy was approved by the FDA last year. FDA research shows 80% of patients have positive response within 8 treatments. They see 70-90% of acne clear up after the 8 treatment sessions, but may need touch up treatments after 4-8 months to maintain the desired effects.

Unlike acne meds, there are NO adverse side effects, but since its a fairly new treatment and its expensive...insurance doesn't cover the costs.

I've tried a number of acne meds and nothing has really worked for me. Most make me sick and have little effect on my skin. The phototherapy thing sounds cool, but its like 1600USD for the 8 sessions and then maybe another $200 every 4-8 months...

so I guess this is an opinion question...if you have moderate acne would you spend the money and try this new treatment?

do some more research on it before you make a decision. it's pretty pricey so at least know what you're spending your money on.

i bought the butter today, at a health fod store near to me (there was me thinking i was going to have to search everywhere)-it says 100% shea butter, is it meant to be really, really thick and kind of grainy in a way? It melts really easily though, and spreads on thin on the skin.

Does anybody know of a good Cocoa Butter brand I can get in the U.S. at places like Walmart and Walgreens that is 100% natural and spread evenly onto the skin? Will it alsp help with pimples?

There are different things you can do to combat acne scars. If the scars are bumps or discolorations of the skin its easier....then it helps with different lotions or creams to fade them and peelings helps making them smoother and more even...Just remember to use a high sunscreen whenever your exposed to daylight, the discoloration of the scar is your bodys way of protecting a damaged area from sunlight......if the scars have left pits in your skin the most effective way to get rid of them is peeling, chemical peels, crystal clear, blue peel, laser peeling...there are a lot of good peels to choose from.

If the scar is a really deep hole in your skin you have as far as I know two options....either let a surgeon cut out the inside skin of the scar and put a stitch in it...or fill it from underneath either with restylane or fat. I dont know if restylane is on the marked in USA yet, I know surgeons has been working to introduce it to USA.
If you choose to let the surgeon cut it out for you, you will end up with a small line instead of an "icepick scar" and that makes you able to work on it fading it with creams and peelings

The consept of filling it is quite new to me and I havent talked to anyone whos done it yet....

All this talk of African Shea Butter got me intrigue and I ordered some from eBay, hopefully I will get it by this weekend!

If it doesn't work for my skin, apparently its a great moisturiser in general so hopefully it will work wonders on my dry legs

In your opinion do junk food (that is chocolate, chips, soft drinks....) cause acne?

Derms will say that there is no proof that it does..., but it all depends on the person.

Despite what dermatologists/science says, chips and fries still make me break out.

I don't think it's an automatic truth, but for some people, it does seem to cause breakouts.

too much caffeine (soft drinks, tea, & coffee) & not enough water is what causes my breakouts.

totally off topic but becky i love that damien rice song. I have it on constant repeat.

ps the shea butter totally works!

too much chocolate can make me break out in hives... but not pimples...

I believe it even though there's no scientific evidence :ninja:

Nah, I don't see the link for me.
Maybe it's cuz I'm not keen on junk food anyway, other than chocolate.

nope, no link for me, either. The only time I get a pimple or two (I never had acne real bad) is when I'm a. stressed, or b. PMSing
