i'm disappointed with the sequins highlighter. it has been done by Chanel before and better too.
does anyone know when the sky line nailpolish is supposed to come out? it was supposed to be a july release. is it online only?
my urban decay pencils turned rock hard rather quickly, so i dont think i'll be repurchasing them.
Blue Illusion de Chanel Makeup Collection
‘The juvenile grace of an almost nude face showcases eyes with marine depths, mellowed by the radiance of blue tones. On eyelids, ILLUSION D’OMBRE takes on a scintillating and satiny effect that makes eye makeup glow with each bat of the lashes. Two airy shades of grey blue, one pale, DESTINATION, and the other more intense, APPARITION, adapt to all faces. Eyeshadows are applied according to inspiration: in sheer washes or deep colour blocks, in monochrome or gradations.
Mascara-laden lashes accentuate the graphic tracing of the eye contour with a sophisticated note. LE CRAYON YEUX BLEU AÉRIEN borders the eyelids with an intense stroke, like a horizon line over the ocean. The effect can be optimized with LE CRAYON KHÔL and le STYLO YEUX WATERPROOF, chosen in the MARINE shade, perfect to intensify the depth of the eyes or create evening makeup.
The natural complexion is simply dressed in a tender pink blush with JOUES CONTRASTE ROSE ÉCRIN. LE CRAYON LÈVRES NATURAL becomes one with a subtle shade of ROUGE COCO SUPERSTITION, a golden beige, the favorite colour of Mademoiselle. For the final step of this chromatic journey, LE VERNIS SKY LINE sweeps nails with a delicate shade of pearly blue that captures and softens the light in its pearly reflections.’
Available exclusively in all Chanel boutiques, Harrods, Selfridges W1, Selfridges Manchester Exchange, House of Fraser Glasgow and Fenwick Newcastle from 13th July 2012.
Sky Line is part of the Blue Illusion de Chanel makeup collection, from Chanel's spring/summer 2012 Haute Couture show. The entire Haute Couture collection featured the colour blue and was inspired by the glamour of air travel in its heyday.
One thing that Chanel does very well is linking its fashion shows to its makeup line - something I have yet to see in other French fashion houses with their own cosmetics line. Sky Line was another case of 'oh I want that' after seeing backstage beauty photos from the Haute Couture show.
I wanted to buy Sky Line (from seeing the backstage photos) but was apprehensive as blue nail polish doesn't sit well with my olive/tanned sallow skintone. My worry was that it would be too close to Riva, which did not complement my colouring. But as you can see, Sky Line is completely different to Riva and in my opinion much more beautiful.
With Riva next to Sky Line, you can see Sky Line is a blue with purple undertone. Nails Inc Blue Bell in the background is a pastel lavender and looks more in tone with Sky Line.
Sky Line has micro shimmer and is similar in texture to Island from the summer collection. The finish is pearl metallic, and the shimmer is not perceivable to the eye - I can only really capture it in super close up macro shots.
Colour wise I find it hard to describe Sky Line. At the counter under department store lighting, Sky Line definitely looked like a light 'sky' blue. However when viewed under natural daylight, I see it more as a lavender blue.
Initially, sight unseen, I thought Sky Line was going to be one of those cult Chanel colours that won't look good on me (Paradoxal & Riva springs to mind). I really really like Sky Line - it's a colour that works with my colouring and just looks very fresh and elegant (for an unusual colour).
In fact I'd put it out there and say I like it better than all of Chanel's recent releases that I picked up this year - from the spring collection (April), the Roses Ultimes de Chanel collection (Distraction & Frisson), the summer collection (Island, Delight & Holiday) and the Bombay Express collection (Diwali).
The Harmonie du Soir Quadra Eye Shadow palette ($65) offers shades of bronze gold, taupe, violet plum, and pink. I think it looks covet-worthy.
The shimmering soft pink Joues Contraste blush in Star Dust ($43) appears to be an absolute must-have. It's my kind of color.
The photo shows Rouge Allure Velvet ($32.50) luminous matte lip color in L'Impatiente - a shade that will be too dark for me. However, there will be a Lèvres Scintillantes Glossimer ($29.50) in Allégorie, a sheer, shimmering pink that looks gorgeous.
An eye shadow duo in Nuit-Claire ($42) will offer shades of rosy beige and deep black. Even more exciting to me is Apparence ($36), a Long-Wear Luminous Eye Shadow in gold bronze.
The Ligne Graphique de Chanel ($34) liquid eyeliner will be introduced in Rouge Noir, a deep red black. I'm going to have to see that.
The deep black-red Les Vernis ($26) nail lacquer in Malice appears perfect for the holiday season. All of the products I've listed will be limited editions. The collection also features lovely re-promotes. I think there will be something for everyone.
I'm a bit disappointed with the varnish colors that have been released recently, the only one that even remotely interests me is Vertigo.
Chanel Vertigo Le Vernis / Nail Lacquer ($26.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described as a “grey-black.” I’d like to describe it as one weird color that’s impossible to describe! In the bottle, it’s like a deep, dark smoky plummy brown with bits of shimmer in it. In natural light, it’s an inky brown with a hint of gray and touch of burgundy. In bright light, it’s a plum-tinged brown with bronze and red shimmer. Cult Nails Enigmatic is redder, lighter, purpler. Rescue Beauty Lounge Recherche is purpler, more eggplant than brown. Illamasqua Baptiste is definitely purple. Chanel Paradoxal is purpler, less brown (but it’s kind of the closest in “feel”). China Glaze Bogie is duller, more purple.
Oh, Vertigo is a complex one, which is what you hope for when Chanel debuts a new shade. I don’t know if it’s a pretty shade or one of those pretty-ugly kind of shades that people either love or hate. I see myself closer to the love it crowd, but I don’t think it’s particularly flattering against my skin tone, so it’s not something I’d end up reaching for. I always appreciate it when a brand manages to come up with a color that’s more nuanced or harder to dupe. I wish the shimmer was more noticeable, though, because it’s nearly invisible under most lighting conditions!
Chanel’s formula wears a full week on me with minor tip wear but no chipping. The consistency of Vertigo was just right–not too thick or too thin–and it applied easily and evenly. The color was fully opaque after two coats.
When the fall collection will be available in Europe?
Chanel Suspicious Le Vernis / Nail Lacquer ($26.00 for 0.40 fl. oz.) is described simply as “fuchsia.” It’s a pinky-red–a little more red than raspberry red to me, though it seemed like it was going to be raspberry-colored based on the bottle. NARS Anardana is warmer, less red. MAC Toco Toucan is pinker. China Glaze Ahoy! is darker, more raspberry. Chanel April is dustier, less red. Butter London Blowing Raspberries is a smidgen darker, pinker. It’s a little summery, even though it’s new for fall.
The formula on this is insanely good! It’s thin without being watery or anything like that; just thin and extremely pigmented. One coat almost produces opaque results, but I did swatches with two coats just to be sure! The coverage is top notch, while it just applies so easily and beautifully–no pooling, bubbling, or streaking. It even has a semi-shiny finish when it dries down, though for anyone who loves a high-shine finish, I’d still opt for a top coat. I typically get a week of wear with Chanel’s formula; no chipping, just minor tip wear. Suspicious is not the most unique shade out of the three shades in the collection, but the quality is impressive.
has anyone else noticed bubbling in chanel nail polish? that happens to me sometimes. is it because of oil on my nails? or is it because my applications are too rushed? or could it be my basecoat (another brand)?
Chanel Rose Initiale Joues Contraste / Blush ($43.00 for 0.21 oz.) is described as “peach pink.” It’s a subtly yellow-toned medium pink with subtle peach shimmer that translates into more of a sheen. Tom Ford Frantic is much lighter and warmer–less pink. Bobbi Brown Nude Pink is much more blue-based. MAC Subtle Breeze is a smidgen darker, no shimmer. Chanel Blush Horizon de Chanel is lighter and looks a bit warmer on cheeks. MAC Stunner is much lighter. MAC Mighty Aphrodite is less pink. Chanel Pink Explosion is a little lighter and blue-based.
New and not listed as limited edition (!), Rose Initiale will be a lovely go-to, everyday kind of color on light to medium-dark skin tones, regardless of undertone. It’s not too warm or too cool-toned. On deeper complexions, it may disappear somewhat, but I think it’s going to be a color that’s right on the edge, so if it really appeals to you, still check it out. The pigmentation is true-to-pan, and it’s buildable but blendable, so you can achieve the intensity you desire up to the color in the pan. Because the shimmer is very subtle, it looks and acts as more of a sheen; it doesn’t emphasize pores.
The texture of Chanel’s Joue Contraste formula (including this shade) is soft, silky-smooth, and a wee bit powdery because of just how finely-milled it is. Thankfully, it doesn’t look powdery at all on the skin. It has a very natural consistency and texture once applied. When I wore Rose Initiale, it managed to look good for a solid eight hours. It was starting to fade after nine hours.
Chanel Infini Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as “silver.” It’s a light silver with a frosted, metallic finish. Guerlain Les Aquas is similar but more metallic, slightly darker. MAC Misty is very similar. MAC Filament is a bit darker. Bobbi Brown Tinsel is similar in color but chunkier in texture.
The color payoff was disappointing, and I absolutely had to use it wet in order to get a somewhat smooth finish. I tried to apply it to the lid, and it was sheer and patchy, despite trying to pack on the color. It feels so soft to the touch, but it just doesn’t come together for me. I still attempted to wear it, even if it did look awful from the get-go, and it was slightly creased after eight hours when worn alone or over a primer. When I wore it over a primer, the pigmentation was better, but it still wasn’t great. The texture, for as soft as it is, doesn’t seem to hold together, which is what causes sheerer color payoff and patchy application.
I was excited for my order to arrive, but this is a far cry from the excellence that was Complice. It’s surprising to see a silver shade like Infini fall so flat, because I feel like there are so many silver eyeshadows on the market and plenty of them have rich pigmentation. The metallic nature of silvers also means they often go on smoothly, too.
Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “rose brown.” It is a rosy plum with subtle gold micro-shimmer. There’s a soft, muted quality to the overall color. MAC Offshoot is pinker, redder. MAC Oh Oh Oh is redder and has more obvious gold shimmer. MAC Sophisto is sheerer but similar in color. Clarins Blackberry is a bit darker, less pink. Chanel Stunt is a touch less pink and lighter.
It has full color coverage, and the finish is just barely frosted–a little sheen, a hint of shimmer. The texture is creamy without being thick or slippery–there’s enough give so it slides and doesn’t pull or tug at lips. Rouge Coco isn’t the most hydrating formula I’ve tried, but this particular shade was moderately moisturizing–not drying at all but it felt like I needed hydration shortly after this wore off. Caractere wore for four and a half hours. Chanel’s lipstick is perfume-scented (maybe rose?) but I didn’t detect any taste.
Caractere is such a beautiful color for fall! It's dark and sultry without being vampy. It doesn't dominate a look, but it certainly helps to add definition. The formula had great color coverage and wore well.

Chanel Furtif Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as “silver-grey.” It has a light-medium gray base with a silverish shimmer-sheen; it almost looks a little brown-toned. Guerlain Les Gris is similar, perhaps more metallic. Giorgio Armani #22 is more metallic. Tarina Tarantion Mr. Silver is lighter. MAC Electra has more of a satin finish but is similar in color.
I wish I could say Furtif was better than Infini, but it’s only marginally so and infinitely worse compared to Complice. It’s noticeably sheer swatched, and it acts the same way when applied to the lid, with or without a base, wet or dry. It adheres better than Infini, and it doesn’t make the lid look dry almost by clumping up in places, but you have to pack on the color, and if you blend it, it easily fades to oblivion. It wears for about six and a half hours, and after seven hours, there’s noticeable fading.
There’s one more shade for fall, Eclaire, which I’m in the process of testing, so it is with fingers crossed that it fairs better than the last two!
