The Etc Etc of Perfumes & Fragrances

Guys, I need your help. I want to buy my boyfriend a perfume for Christmas and I can't decide which fragrance is the best for him - all I know is that I'm going to buy something that I love, because he'll use it for me . I managed to narrow the choices down to:

-Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Eau D' Été
-Azzaro Now
-DKNY Be Delicious
-Paco Rabanne Black XS

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate the feedback. :flower:

never tried Azzaro now.

YSL L'Homme is such a... common fragrance. it's one of those a guy can wear when he just wants to smell nice, inoffensive and not stand out.

DKNY Be Delicious is super yummy in the topnotes. but with the basenotes, it's awfully boring (at least to my nose)

Black XS is super yummy, in general. i don't get a lot of development from it, to me it's very clean and fresh strawberries. not real strawberries, but also not the articificial kind, it's a strange kinda strawberry. very creamy.

^Thanks, I was actually looking forward to your input, you have such great taste and knowledge about perfumes. ^_^ Do you recommend any particular fragrance? My boyfriend is a neophyte but he really loves to smell nice (I gave him CK's Euphoria for Men and Hugo Boss' Hugo and he wears them all the time). I wanted to give him something that is also a bit sexy.

lol, me? how come? you need to elaborate further via PM cause i don't think we ever talked a lot, did we?

actually, both choices of yours are really good on a novice level. manly, inoffensive, good for guys.

you wanna dig deeper?

YSL Body Kouros. basenotes.net members say it's very medicinal, but i don't get that. to me, it smells really rich, yet clean, in a non-clinical way. a bit on the stuffier side, not if you like your man to smell fresh. got a sexy edge to it.

Lancome Hypnose pour Homme. smells "grown". not a young frag, but sophisticated.

Joop Jump. one of my standard everyday frags. similar to Chanel's Allure Homme Sport, which seems to be very popular with guys, but with a slight edge to it. i guess it's the Tonka Bean, which seems to be in basically every male frag these days.

Terre D'Hermes. it's really spicy, but also in a light and clean way. hints of leather. if i should describe it, i'd say it smells like spicy air. it's a lovely scent for every day use.

Chopard Casran. sweet, but not a gourmand (non-foody). also spicy, not as light as Terre. reminds me of beige cashmere pullovers (don't ask me why ) and also makes me think my hands are dusty (also. no idea why ).

Bulgari Blu Notte. mmmmmmhhhhhh..... i love this one. people say "baby wipes" or "baby powder" and yes, i do detect that powder, but it's mixed with slight chocolate. very seductive IMO.

try those and see which direction you'd like to go with. we can take it from there ;)

I just got that impression from all of your posts in this thread. ^_^ Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely take them into account while choosing my bf's new fragrance.

So I ended up buying 212 Sexy for Men for my boyfriend. It was either this or Hypnôse Homme, which is indeed fantastic. I thought they were both quite similar, the only difference being that Hypnôse smells slightly more sophisticated.

On a side note, I'm seriously holding myself back from buying Escale à Portofino by Dior since I already have Arancia di Capri by Acqua di Parma and they're probably ridiculously similar.

Anyone smelled Lancome Hypnose?
I have a little bottle of it, and I am definitely a fan. It is a total evening/winter/romantic fragrance for me, and it's definitely not what I normally go for. It is a very sophisticated fragrance but it definitely has a few quirks to it...and quirky is my nature.

So...what do you guys do with empty perfume bottles?
The only perfume I have ever finished was a little bottle of Chanel Chance EDT, and I binned that because I toted the bottle around-and it got all beat up. Most of my bottles I will keep as suncatchers, or get a little display and backlight them all because all my Escada bottles will look amazing that way.

Yeah, have to say that I have so many perfumes that it's very rare to finish them.. but some I have, and i throw them away.

i LOVED the entire Sorbet Splash line from last summer.

from the previous collection i got Amber, which is really like. great for fall winter. best part: i got my 300ml bottle on sale for 20 Euros! w00t w00t!

^I'm thinking of buying either Splash Orange or Grapefuit. The fact that it's a 300mL bottle is a huge plus (esp. for a summer EDT).

Same here. I have lost them amongst each other I have so many and I cant wait to throw away the Jo Malone's! Not a fan so much of these, they were a gift. I need to go to Barneys soon and I know I'll gravitate to the new Frederic Malle "In Your Arms" Dans Tes Bras, but I'm needing to venture out of my Barneys fragrances, my favorites being Serge Lutens and Malle and the Creed ones.

Does anyone like Fracas? I need some suggestions myself. ^_^

I love Fracas - on someone else!

Have you ever tried Mona di Orio's Nuit Noire? I think you might like it. My favorite description of it is "the smell of 500 beautiful things rotting." Sounds nasty, maybe, but I think it's beautiful.

Burger King Flame cologne
Burger King (yes, you read that right) has launched Flame, a new body spray for men:

The WHOPPER sandwich is America's favorite burger. Flame by BK captures the essence of that love and gives it to you. Behold the scent of seduction, with a hint of flame-broiled meat.

How do you guys feel about the Marc Jacobs Splash series?

i've tried Rain and Basil. both are good but Basil is my favorite of the two. it reminds me of freshly cut grass in a strangely good way. they don't last long but they're nice for warm days.

in general though i'm not a fan of Marc Jacobs perfumes. i think it's the gardenia that bothers me.

^Thanks for the tips. ^_^

Well, that is... disturbing... :ninja:

I'll look into it...is it in stores? What do you think of Rouge Hermes? I'm obsessed with it! I loooove this, but I cant find it anywhere, other than Hermes.com (Nordstrom no longer carries it )

What are the other Hermes fragrances people appreciate? I havent smelled their men's but I was interested in Equipage perhaps...

I don't think Mona di Orio has wide distribution... I bought a sample from Perfumed Court and then bought a bottle from Aedes.

I haven't tried Rouge; in fact I am woefully unacquainted with Hermès scents in general. I like Bel Ami. I liked Ambre Narguile when I smelled it in the store but I never actually wore it. I like Concentre d'Orange Verte but rarely wear it.

Terre D'Hermes. wonderfully light spicy

else i'm using either women's
(Eau de Merveilles. i can't describe it and i'm not getting any "orange pop" notes. but i love it. and Kelly Caleche. so wonderfully leathery. it's more of a soft leather scent to me than an actual floral.)

the unisex ones (Mediterranée. mmmmmmmmmmhhhhh. smoky, sun drenched, light, simply gorgeous)

or Hermessence (Vetiver Tonka is perfect for everyday wear. as are Poivre Sarmacande and Osmantha Yunnan, tho the latter is clearly a summer frag. Ambre Narguile is PERFECT for this season. and basically no other season ).

i am wearing boudicca wode....and i am not wearing anything else. unless something is as close to that scent, nope. extraordinary work from them.
