The Indie / Emerging Designers mega thread

thanks scott...
cool !!...

but i can't get the link to work...is it me?...

Yay Catherine! I like your synopsis, Scott. I'm particularly impressed by the fact that she's able to incorporate goth influences in her work - even the clichés - without devolving into tackiness, and while maintining a strong identity. I particularly love her accessories, very inventive and romantic...here's a closer look at that felt ribcage-piece.

(btw the website-link doesn't work for me either)

G+N: Gerritt Uittenbogaard + Natasja Martens, a Dutch couple working out of Arnhem. They started out in the late 90s and are still working but have been pretty quiet for the last few years (I think they had a lot of difficulties with sales recently). Their website has also lain dormant for a while now, so there are no current pics, but it's still worth a visit...and afaik the little e-shop is functional: www.fashionfugitive.com

(pics are from from the website, 1998-2001)

bleh...it's the other way round...sorry 'bout that *sigh*

droogist,I so agree. I think those aspects are exactly what I found interesting when I discovered her on Disciple's coverage. Of course, learning from MMM,you tend to learn how to execute things in a different and unpredictable manner. I've never been one myself for the clichés of Goth but she executes the influences rather brilliantly.

G+N...yesss!!

Yeah,I haven't heard about them in ages...since they did those really cool pin cushions.

Oh yes....there's a site link on Catherine's site to her menswear she designed for Swedish punk/Goth band,The Spitts.

I'm glad you brought up Catherine, I love her stuff, I always like how she takes teh spirit of Goth, but dosn't make it look steryotpicall or liek the cliches.

i completely agree...
esp liked scott's little description...very descriptive without being flowery...
seems to have hit all the relevant points very succinctly... :flower:

thanks for the detail droogist...seeing that detail really made a difference...didn't realize the 'ribcage' was made of felt...i liked it much better now...very interesting use of materials...and i like the idea of a 'soft' cage... :flower:

i'll take a look at the new link scott...thanks again... :flower:

yes... i like G+N, very clean and arcitectual.. its modern

i wont share the excitement on Catherine Giacomini..
the wouned-medical theme has been around for ages in Paris,
pure product of the Parisian student scene since at least three years now..
of course she's working on it, in a real inspired vein but still, it seems so 'done' and graduate class to me, i simply cant go 'wow' :ninja:

Well,Catherine's taken a slightly different direction in the last couple years since I first saw her wrapping those clamps round the legs of her models....by injecting that sweetness I mentioned by doing these 50's-style dresses and floral patterns. I mean,it was really heavy beforehand...now there's a slight whimsy in the work now. Her style is still progessing, though.

wow, just seeing the pieces posted here, I'm very impressed by Catherine....I'll check out her site when I have more time....

thanx Scott:flower:

I think australia has a lot of "indie" designers, one americans might know is Tsubi they are some cool blokes!

argentum

There's a jewellery label from Singapore that i really like. It's called Argentum and the designer was trained at Central St Martins. Pieces are mainly done in oxidized silver with a battered and raw finish. She also accepts commissions for wedding rings It's been around for quite a few years and it's not too expensive. Currently, it's only stocked in Singapore and Sydney.

Her website's www.argentum.com.sg

there's a brand called universal utility by caryn mansfield. sold in dover street market. i checked with a staff...he said the brand is based in london but designer is from south africa, and that's where the stuff is made. she usually makes for the japanese market only, but has been picked up by dover street. anyone knows more about the brand? i really like it!

I haven't heard of Hansel before. Is it only stocked in Australia? any website or pics?
