^go to the moss store in soho. www.mossonline.com it's pricey, but if you can afford it, it's the best in new york!

moma store is good to visit too. don't go too minimalistic modern... i'm a big fan of lighting btw..so if you can invest in a few awesome lamps such as the tord boontje garland one at the moss website that's half the work !

what would be considered too min. mod? I live in soho, very close to both Moss and moma. I've actually been to Moma like 5 times in the past few days, making a list and doing some online drawings. So far I have my eyes set on a midsummers night shade hanging light they have a moma for the lower level of my loft, which I plan to make as a "chill" area which I plan on making all white (white shag rug, white body pillows, white shelf, white record player and a contrasting covered book)

I haven't checked out the moss store in person yet but I have looked through the site, though I really do love their stuff its just way out of my range for the most part. I have a budget of about $2,000.00 I would like to spend to redo my place. I do not need a table or work table as I already have those. I was lucky enough to have the previous renter here leave his amazing platform bed so I do not need a bed. I was just wondering how smart it would be to blow half my budget on a nice sofa.

A friend of mine directed me to White on White which is over on broadway and white. They do nice reproductions of designer furniture with solid pricing. I'm eyeing this sofa in a dark charcoal gray. $1,000.00

They also have some barcelona chairs but i feel that would be a little TOO generic in terms of a modern themed interior.

i don't know how expensive the midsummers night shade is, but if it isn't too pricey it would be cool to have a couple. i don't know the dimensions, but it would make quite an impression to double it up...

i guess by minimal i mean a lot of modern design is very clean, and imho, lacking warmth and personality. i think if you like a piece don't be afraid to buy it even if you think it doesn't match. i think being varied and eclectic is a strength... both in the feel of the place and in visual interest. also, i think it is also really important to see the pieces in person before you buy it, esp. if you are considering buying furniture online...

i really like those pantone chairs posted in the last couple pages of the industrial design thread. i'm not sure if they are being sold...but they rock!

I purchased the Midsummer Night Shade at MoMA for less than $70USD. They are very easy to take care of and hardly gather any dust. I like your idea of gathering up, travolta. I might try that sometime. I also have the Garland Shade in Black, and those are even less expensive.

Winged lamp by Ingo Maurer - image from mossonline.com

I know this lamp has been around a while..I still think its cute, but cant bring myself to pay what it costs when I could easily make one myself. I've actually thought about making some for Storms room.

I've loved this lamps ever since I saw it years ago, but the price is just ridiculous! Will you make one for baby faust too? :p

Have you seen the chandelier?

The only problem with a lamp like that though is the light is diffused, because there is no lamp shade, and it'll hurt your eyes every time you look at it directly. Whenever you see it in a store, they'll put a low watt bulb in it  .

I have seen it..my doctor has it in her waiting room.

Last christmas I bought angel wings for the sole purpose of attaching them to a bulb..but I haven't gotten around to going it yet...if you end up as my secret santa recipient next x-mas I'll make one for baby faust ;)

ahh, love this thread. it's so interesting.

love that lamp hanne and agree with faust is that you would definately need a low-wattage bulb so you don't burn your eyes everytime you look at it. however, my concern is would you need to put a protectant on the wings so that they (or what is attaching them to the lamp) doesn't burn? though maybe if it's a low wattage bulb there really isn't a risk for that....

I saw that chandelier faust  very pretty but would be worried that it might look threadbare in a room that was too large.

love that Midsummer night shade....am thinking about ordering it from Moma in the pink (realized in the airport how flattering and soothing pink light can be) but am curious....can you just attach it to a bare bulb on a cord or does it need some sort of special frame? From the looks of it, I would think the former, but am just inquiring.

Yay! I want you to be my santa and I want to go to your doctor! My doctor has vinyl chairs.

Meg, the material from which the wings are made is fireproof.

oh problemo..the angel wings I found last x-mas are from real feathers  ..I'm hoping that if I strip the end of the wings and wrap it with plastic coated wire it'll be okay...don't want to burn the house down or have it smell ...erhm funky.

may be you can coat them with something

perhaps instead of attaching it straight to a bulb you could attach it to the socket the bulb goes into. that way you would be able to change the bulb if it burnt out and wouldn't have to go through the entire process of making it again. that would also eliminate any danger of burning the feathers.

or am i looking at this entirely the wrong way? i've only seen that one picture so i can't really imagine how it exists in reality.

Any suggestions ? what would make it fire-proof  ?

hmm, i'm not sure. i'm positive that they could help you at any hardware store.

Hanne, I've heard of fire-retardent sprays for things before, so as faust says, you should be able to get them at your local D.I.Y store...

I agree, there must be some sort of fire retardant spray out there. Missed the post where you said your doctor has it at her office. what a waiting room that must be!
