as for specific recommendations--there's such a wide selection of products and then colors that it really depends on what you typically like.
....so now my Entwined Lustre Lipstick will last a bit longer,because I can alternate with this...
and I don't really consider that a con. If I were going to rec just one MAC product to try I would say it would be the eyeshadows. They come in the most wonderful shades and are very highly pigmented so its a win win situation. I like to experiment by mixing some of the brighter colors with the nuetrals and playing with different textures but all the shades are good and eyeshadows are a good way to start with MAC. My alltime favorite MAC product is the Pigment. Pigments are just so versitile and fun but I've found they take a little getting used to for some people so I don't know if I'd say they were a good starter item.
