The Most Overrated Designers...

Nicolas Ghesquière- He is doing the exact same thing that Cristobal Balenciaga did, no variation or interpretation or anything. What's so special about that?

Muiccia Prada- Is it just me, or is every Prada collection the same?

Tara Subkoff- Someone, tell my why this women is a designer? Seriously!

Tara definetily.
Versace: Well, Donatella is far overrated, but I also think of Gianni as overrated. I just never understood the hype.

Armani of today is overrated- It feels like I have been looking at the same show for about 10 years now...
Marc Jacobs- He is overexposed and does a horrible job at Louis Vuitton
Michael Kors- Makes overpriced sportwear.
I also agree with Matthew Williamson being overrated

^that's true.

kharma, you mentioned Prada....thank you. I had forgotten all about her. Should add that ego maniac husband of her's,Bertelli,to that as well. As the whole of that brand is truly overrated. She's a gimmicky copy-cat,anyway. Really,I can't stand when people say she's brilliant...as if she should be cherished and beheld in way like Rei Kawakubo. In fact,I think she, herself believes she is like her.

I don't think that Stefano Pilati is overrated. As a matter of fact, I think he is kind of appreciated. I remeber when everybody was bashing his first collection at YSL (The one with the cinched belts and polka-dots). I was the only one that I know who actually liked it... It is funny now to see that most girls now (and most shows at a time) are actually doing his "Look" now.

Frida Gianninni isn't overrated, she is trash... I hope nobody actually thinks she is that good.

I don't think this should turn to another "I don't think ________ is overrated"-thread. I understood the topic was about the designers members personally think are overrated. I think it would be good if everyone would provide points as why they think the designers on their list are overrated.

Just my two cents :flower:

I think Michael Kors is overated simply because his clothes are expensive and not once have I found an article of clothing that I liked.

Jil Sander is overated because all of the clothes from Jil Sander, I can find the exact same thing at banana republic.

Marc Jacobs: The basic feeling of his clothes seems to always be the exact same. I simply fail to see anything interesting in his collections, and while they are not always bad I do not understand why his collection is always hailed as the best of NYC fashion week. I'm bored of the "indie-preppy-socialite" clothes he designs and models on his famous friends. As for LV, he has turned the classic LV monogram to something matching the over-exposion of the Burberry check. I see nothing special in this house anymore, all I see is money, not clothes.

John Galliano: I think his designs are gimmicky and trashy. His shows are predictably "shocking" and while they are a show they lack in everything else such as creating beautiful clothes.

Luella Bartley + most of the other "Brit designers" showing at London fashion week: Everyone of these designers seems to be "indie" and "cool", while their collections look like Topshop to me. I just do not see any creativity in most of the London fashion week designers.

Nicolas Ghesquière: Some of his ideas for Balenciaga are ridiculous. His collections are not bad, but not exciting either. I think of him as a try-hard and definetily over-hyped; Time's 100 most influental people list? He gets recognition because of the name of Cristòbal Balenciaga, who in my mind deserves the hype and recognition. I do not see Ghesiquière as inventive, he just follows the footsteps of Balenciaga, and while he sometimes is able to produce good pieces in hin collections, I never see much interpretation or inviduality.

Matthew Williamson: He is a designer who got famous because of the boho trend...he should have gone after that.

Giorgio Armani: I give credit for his old collections, but the new Armani is awful. It does not look classy and is almost always uninteresting; as said, it is as if watching the same collection season after season.

Matthew Williamson: He is a designer who got famous because of the boho trend...he should have gone after that.

He got famous because he latches himself to the "IT" girl of the moment:innocent:

Michael Kors might just be the most overrated designer of all.

John Galliano for Dior.
To describe his Dior designs in one word: ridiculous.

And all these young Dior-ites of today constantly laud him for his apalling collections. Many of them assume that couture entails creating ridiculous unwearable getups. It's kind of sad really.
