What designer produces good quality materials without hurting checkbooks?

Italian made shoes are still the best in my opinion

Yes and no. Italy has the best in the world, but also many of those "best" companies have to eat and pay the electric bills. As such, many of them produce for other designers and lower the quality (at the designer's request, of course) to such a degree that they actually don't want anybody to know that they are producing the items. Not to mention that even "Made in Italy" is subjective; not every Italian can afford $500 shoes.

So, much more than "Made in Italy," I like to know WHO in Italy made the stuff. That generally gives some clue, but again, not always.

To mention ole Valentino again; I have a pair of $695 boots that have the soles glued on them, not sewn, and cheap zippers that like to fall off half the time. Luckily, they were on sale. I'm sure Valentino uses a famous maker to produce them (so that they can say, "We only use the best!") but they also probably ask them to use cheaper materials so they can make more money.

Diors are hip and chic and young
but those canvas (most of diors) is just plain low quality
they still dare to say "your bag is made in dior atelier in 30 ave montaign blablababla with strict quality control blablablabla with best materials blablabla...
it's time for Dior to look after their quality

i can see great quality and workmanship only in LV, burberry and Hermes and celine too

I completely agree with you on the Dior comment that you made... they apparently think that they can get away with anything as long as they have the Trotter series smothering the whole bag.

I must admit though, that I like the design of the gaucho bag.

What do people think of Diane von Furstenburg...

some of her designs are really cute, but some are just atrocious. I guess she wanted to get into the whole "monogramming" thing, so she made a bag like this:

I haven't seen the price tags of her clothes, but what range is it?

DvF wrap dresses retail between £250 - £350 in the UK. Although it's more expensive than high street versions, I find they have really nice cut. I think they are made in China

Funny thing is, I still think most of the designers mentioned are expensive. I'm a teen, so I'm a bit more into quanity than quality because for variety, which is a factor, but I think designers charge too much.

cheap and good:
Uniqlo is great for how cheap it is. A store just opened in Soho.

For something a bit pricier A.P.C. is also great, I get all my denim from there (around $140 a pop). DKNY and Marc by Marc Jacobs can be good too when they are on sale. I have a pair of amazing DKNY dress pants for only $70, they were on sale from $129.

fantasia is right, definitely "contemporary" pricing ... I have never owned any DVF (and never seen this monogram line :innocent:), so can't comment on quality for money.

I believe I mentioned Kate Spade earlier in this thread ... went with her again for my fall bag ...

Kate Spade does have some great bags...

I have her canvas bag that she collaborated with Maira Kalman (sp?) and I love it!! You can get great deals at outlets. I got mine for 100 dollars.

I was just doing a search & found this thread ... I believe we have a newer thread it needs to be merged with ...
