chaky since i remember that you're a big fan of anna's,did you hear about this?

Nov 2, 2011 - When she burst onto the tennis scene in 2004 at age 17, Anna Chakvetadze was in a line of young guns joining the WTA tour with a win against No. 3 Anastasia Myskina at the U.S. Open.

The junior finalist at Wimbledon in 2003 went on to reach a career-high No. 5 world ranking, but eventually fell out of the top 150 due to injuries and illnesses.

Now, Chakvetadze has turned to politics. She is joining the "Right Cause Party" that stands for Russia's lower parliament. The election will take place Dec. 4. Chakvetadze's party will need seven percent of the vote to earn seats.

"I would like to develop youth sport. I was a sportsman myself so I know about problems in sport," the 24-year-old told CNN.

"I would like youth sport in our country to be affordable to people from all social classes. We have to give the same access to sport for kids from poor families. Ideally, my goal is to get the majority involved in sport activities ... sport should come to every family."

Chakvetadze isn't the only former tennis player looking for a spot in the next Russian government. Fellow countryman Marat Safin is also looking to take one of the 450 places.

Yes, I've been hearing things about this for a few weeks. It came a bit out of the blue and certainly surprised me and other Anna fans. Not to get into the details of the politics, but from what I read about the current climate and electoral system in Russia it sounds very unlikely that Anna will get elected.

She hasn't announced a retirement from tennis but has talked about having a firm focus on this new role for now. The problem is she's had a terrible time with illness and injury and basically wrote off the second half of the season to recuperate. I'm hoping that after the election she will refocus on trying to kickstart her tennis career in the new year.

i miss anna very much. it's too bad the things that happened to her....i don't think she was ever the same after that. i hope she comes back after this little break.

must post this because it really speaks to how exciting this year's championships really were-

LONDON, United Kingdom - The TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships - the 41st edition of the WTA's season-ending event which took place at the Sinan Erdem Arena in Istanbul, Turkey from October 25-30 - registered the highest attendance in 12 years and set record broadcast and digital audience milestones for the tournament.

"The TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships was an historic event in a new market, and having a full stadium of enthusiastic fans supporting our players at the WTA's crown-jewel finale has demonstrated the global reach and strength of women's tennis," said Stacey Allaster, Chairman and CEO of the WTA. "Sold-out attendance is also a testament to the Ministry of Sport and Turkish Tennis Federation's efforts in executing, promoting and organizing this great event."

Total Championships attendance reached 70,824, with the average session visited by 11,804 fans. The Sunday finals (October 30, 2011) won by Petra Kvitova and the doubles team of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond were watched by 13,676 fans.

The TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships broadcast more than 400 hours of live coverage in 164 countries through 22 international TV broadcasters, the widest reach of a WTA Championships to date. Among the broadcast highlights, the WTA's longstanding partner Eurosport once again telecast the Championships across its pan-European footprint. The previous high came last year at the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar through coverage by 19 international broadcasters in 162 countries.

Additionally, Eurosport.com and ESPN3.com, among many others, offered live streaming web broadcast of all matches, and TennisTV.com brought fans not only matches but daily highlights, shot of the day, player interviews and additional features.

"To see people out there watching my match, so enthusiastic, while you never quite know what to expect when you come to a new city for the first time….I think the attention that the tournament has gotten and the respect that the players have received has been really incredible," said Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova added: "This is one of the biggest tournaments for us, and for it to be brought to Istanbul in one of the fastest-growing cities in the world is a big achievement, not just for us as tennis players but for the country itself, for the young girls and boys that are growing up that have watched the sport on TV that haven't had the opportunity to watch this type of tennis."

"I think these Championships was a good opportunity for us to grow tennis, not only in Turkey but all over the world. The crowd was amazing and they showed us great support," said Victoria Azarenka.

Raymond commented: "The crowds have been phenomenal. I have never played a doubles match in front of that many people, even at a Slam. They love their tennis here. They're proving that and that's a very important aspect of when you put year-end Championships on. This was definitely the highlight for me."

The WTA's official website offered fans daily highlight videos, player features, scores and photos and registered record traffic during the Championships. Unique visits and page views were up by 67% and 56%, respectfully, over last year's Championships results. The number of daily visits peaked on Friday, October 28, 2011 - the highest since September 2010.

Next year's TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships will take place in Istanbul on October 23-28, 2012.

now i know it probably isn't safe to presume everything based on this maiden season at istanbul and as i was reading too that ticket sales were more moderately priced than normal but the attendance was definitely something akin to a major. but the television audience is what really stands out in my eyes. i think with so much intrigue with all the players....the major champs this season....the no.1 player.....i think it was one of the most exciting it's been in many seasons. just that unpredictability attracted a lot of interest i think.

btw, just saw that vera zvonareva withdrew from fed cup and tarpi has chosen svetlana to take her place and kirilenko/stasia the other spot. they chose kirilenko to open against kvitova and may use stasia in one of the reversal rubbers. definitely a major blow on russia's chances without their best player(that actually plays, that is)....

not sure what tarpi was thinking putting kirilenko up first against kvitova though. no offense, while kirilenko is definitely a scrapper she's hardly reliable in big matches. i hate to say but she's rather the habitual choker and with kvitova's power and serving prowess, not to mention her level of confidence,i can't see she doing a whole lot against her. and sveta she's certainly going to need to find some morsel of her old form again if she wants to give russian smidgen of a chance.

Kei Nishikori beat Djokovic in Basel 2-6 7-6 6-0!

Nole's shoulder is flaring up again. I think his participation in Paris is in doubt. And of course everyone is mindful of the World Tour Finals in only a few weeks. That's his fourth loss this year and the third while not 100% fit. At least he didn't retire. I suppose he doesn't want to tarnish his excellent record this year by playing events where he knows he won't be fit enough to win.

Good news for Fed of course as he's into the Basel finals and will play Nishikori.

I see in Fed Cup that Kvitova demolished Kirilenko. Pretty much expected. And Sveta's levelled up the tie against Safarova. If Sveta loses to Petra tomorrow I wonder who Tarpi will put in for the fourth match. Possibly Pavs instead of Masha. I still think the Czechs are favourites overall. They do have the second best doubles player in the world on the squad.

I'm really enjoying the Raonic/Benneteau match. They seem so evenly matched. But it looks like Ranoic is going to end up on the losing end with Benneteau up a break in the third set.

Well I just watched Federer annihilating Nadal at the O2. As someone on twitter just said, I bet Roger wishes the Olympics were going to be held there instead of Wimbledon.

So Federer's through. And I guess with Murray out it's looking better for Djokovic in his group.

Scratch what I said about Djokovic. Ferrer thumps him 6-3 6-1. Is it burn-out after an amazing year? His backhand was going nowhere except the bottom of the net. He can still qualify for the semis I think depending on how the rest of the round robin goes.

And well done to Ferrer who's really taken his chance here and is playing some very good stuff.

Did anyone expect none of the top 3 in the world to make the semis of the World Tour Finals? Bad way to end the season particularly for Djokovic after his incredible year.

And Nadal... well perhaps a combination of tiredness, one eye on the Davis Cup final and a bit shellshocked by continual defeats to Novak this year have left him low on confidence.

Was no-one else on tfs watching the World Tour Finals this year?

Well I got the final I wanted and kinda expected after the first lot of matches in the round robin. Gotta say congratulations to Jo for coming back from the brink in the final. Match point down and he hung in there and got it to a third set. He really made this more than a routine match; it was great entertainment. I'm hoping he can get in the Top 4 rankings next year.

But I'm thrilled for Roger! :woot: It's a record sixth WTF title in his 100th career final. Not bad!

I didn't get a chance to watch any of it, but I followed the matches/results. Congrats to Roger. Great end to his season with those couple of titles and now this.

Can't wait to see how the Australian summer of tennis will pan out and also how Novak will hold onto his no. 1 spot this year. He has so many points to defend.

First proper day of the new season today! The off-season felt too long (but it was too short if you know what I mean).

Sad to say the first completed main draw match of the new season was Pervak retiring with a migraine after eight games against Schiavone. Not the most auspicious start.

Biggest news so far is Andy Murray signing up Ivan Lendl as his new coach. Does everyone think it will work out? I can see why a match-up would work. Lendl was in a similar position to Murray in that his lost his first few slam finals. Definitely a good thing to have someone in your corner who's been there and done it.

I just wonder about any potential personality clashes. That's always been Murray's problem before.

i know exactly what you mean.

interesting first event though on the women's side. most of the top 10 is absent....4 players at hopman cup, maria withdrawing and a few not participating at all. sam stosur is the no.1 seed i think for the first time ever at a big event.....fitting it's essentially at her home tournament. but the wta says they're fining those players who chose to play hopman cup instead of brisbane $100K which i think is a rather outrageous since these players were committed to playing that event prior to they changing brisbane's position on the calendar. i really hope they all appeal that. next year hopman cup will have to think about changing their dates for a week earlier if they want to keep their long-standing tradition of participation of star players.

That's one hell of a big fine. But I'm pretty sure the Hopman Cup will pay it on their behalf so the players won't really see it. Looking to the future though, it does seem essentially like blackmail from the WTA to force them to move.

it's exorbitant, needless to say. and quite unfair,if i say so myself. basically like you've stated, they're basically trying to force hopman cup to change or face the risk of becoming obsolete. and for an event of this nature, with the kind dedication and support it's had from star players for many years.....it's a slap in their faces, really. since it is an ITF sanctioned event i would honestly fight that decision on both accounts....the change of the brisbane start and the fines on these players.

It's such an intriguing pairing and I have a good feeling about it. Lendl was a hard worker and often misunderstood, seen as dour, an outsider etc. Murray has some similar qualities although because of his association with the LTA he is more of an insider than Lendl (being eastern European) ever was. I wish Muzza the best.

Good start in Abu Dabi by Nole. Hard to know what to make of Federer's poor showing as it was an exo, and Nadal is apparently injured again (shoulder).

Anyhow, looking forward to a great season on men's and women's tours. i hope Kvitova really makes herself a force throughout the season. watching her!!

Happy (tennis) New Year All.

Really happy with the way Tomic and Stosur played to day.

Tomic seems to have worked a lot on his strength and movement on the court. Although he stills seems to have issues in maintaining his momentum. In the first set he was up 5-0 and started losing momentum to end up with 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Stosur seems to get stronger/more powerful with every season. While Stosur won 6-2, 6-3 Yakimova did put up a good fight with some really good rallies.

I'm not reading anything into Abu Dhabi whatsoever. I'm sure Nadal was trying to avoid playing Nole there anyway. It's just appearance fees.

I'm with you on Kvitova. I hope she has an excellent showing in Oz and takes world no.1 from Woz asap.
