Theyskens confirmed at Nina Ricci - updated

ehh maybe this was all part of a major plan? When did the GM at Ricci (formerly of Rochas) leave? Maybe they all knew it was coming and he jumped ship and wanted to secure a new place for him and olivier? Just a random musing.

Regardless, I don't think this is that bad of a thing. Nina Ricci is really NOT that established. It's only the past couple of years the line has started to come back into it's own. In fact, I would say it's only this past season and possibly the season before that. It's still not well known at all as a fashion house outside of fashion circles. Olivier is good at reinventing. Yes his own line would be great but I don't think this is terrible or some sort of fashion apocalypse as people seem to be making it out to be. Nilsson would be good at de la Renta as well. It's a shame they sacked him just as Ricci was becoming good (though I wouldn't pay those prices for it).

^ Yes, Nina Ricci is so "uninteresting and old" in my eyes:-P. I just can't imagine anyone around their 20s and 30s wearing NR. But I haven't seen anything NR from a long time, tho.

Nina Ricci is a staple of fashion just like Mary McFadden. Once old can be new again.

It would be redundant if Olivier starts his own line when the economy is unstable. He's still young and have lots of time to even think of branching on his own.

Just to avoid confusion....I'm not saying nina ricci is a new label. i'm saying I don't think they have been well established for years as a forward fashion label.

i'm a bit dissapointed from the confirmation of this 'rumour' (if we read it at wwd , its somehow confirmed)

somehow Theyskens seems a bit desperate at the moment, i can fully understand his fear of staying without a job but still..
if he 'waited' a bit longer maybe something more suitable to his style could eventually turn up for him, i find his decision a bit 'insecure' and 'rushed'

anyway, good luck to one of the most charming boys in the industry :lucky:

but Rochas wasn't too 'forward' either

i believe that both fashion houses fall in the same 'comme il faut / middle of the road' category and somehow i believe this may be bringing a creative restriction to Olivier Theyskens :(

exactly, that was my point Lena. Someone said Nina Ricci is a fashion house with an established look and I was arguing against that. I think there is time to mold it still. Tricote, you might have said this? It might bring him creative restriction but so what?! I mean.....I think he is still so young.....yes he is an amazing designer but I think one of the good things about working for the corporation is it gives designers a good grounding in how things really need to happen. He can be as creative as he wants but if he doesn't know how to run a fashion house then it doesn't really matter. Sorry if this post doesn't make sense.

maybe that is just what he is doing..
waiting for something better....
but better to be employed while you wait ...
than starving to death while you sit on the couch waiting for the phone to ring...

i think it shows a lot of strength and character...
i am glad he is not as 'fragile and precious and delicate' as some of his followers would like to imagine...
because he would not survive at all if he was....

and it means he gets to stay in Paris- which i believe was a priority for him!!...

Yes, because waiting could be a risky game. Any vacancy is being "realeased" at the moment? Chloe? Nah. I think he might fit better the "old" HC houses, rather than dynamic and, sorry for the word, commercial driven houses, accesories, second lines and such.

I think he made the right decision (in regards to the current announcemnt). For practically sake it was wise of him. The guy is not unhappy with restrictions to his craft. He's just happy to design. B)

right, but one just not jumps into a two/three year contract while 'waiting for something better' to show up..

thats why i liked the way Sophia Kokosalaki treated herself. She stayed focused for years resisting jumping on offers which didnt mean too much for her, until she signed what she was really aiming for

on the other hand, maybe Theyskens really likes his new position at the house of Ricci

i don't think we know that kokosalaki was actually OFFERED anything...
we don't know that she turned anything down, do we...?

we only know that someone else always got the jobs she was rumoured to be considered for...
do you know something we don't lena?

:D well, as a matter of fact i do :ninja:
she turned down the Givenchy position while waiting -and working- towards her dream design chair, and now, its her's

anyway, it was just an example and as i said, maybe Theyskens actually adores the house of Nina Ricci..
we'll never find out

I've always thought of Nina Ricci as being a very soft and romantic house. Theyskens certainly does romanticism with an edge, it could work.

Isn't it wierd that "everybody":-) I mean Kokosalaki and Theyskens himself turned down Givenchy's offer. Bad McQueen's experiece? I mean is LVMH too hard to work for?

I just found this on vogue.co.uk
THEYSKENS ARRIVES

EXPECT an announcement from Nina Ricci any minute to confirm that Olivier Theyskens has taken up where Lars Nilsson left off last week. According to WWD, we can expect 29-year-old Theyskens - left jobless when Proctor & Gamble announced it was closing Rochas last month – to reveal details of his contract by the end of the week. The new job would put him in charge of creative direction at the 83-year-old house - which ceased its haute couture collections in 1998, a year after being sold by its founding family to the Spanish Puig Group – as well as its substantial perfume franchise. Nilsson, meanwhile, is keeping fashion watchers guessing while speculation mounts that he is close to finalising a contract with a fashion house in New York. He is refusing to comment on rumours that Oscar de la Renta may be next on his resumé. (August 30 2006, AM)

Hmm, isn't it true that Puig has already closed Paco Rabanna?
