Thierry Mugler F/W 11.12 Paris

I actually had high hopes for this; given the title of the collection, I was expecting full on Mutant Alien Goddess looks, but it was all relatively timid. I hope they will step it up in the future, and do something over the top yet beautiful, because this seems neither wearable, nor spectacular.

Ugh, this is Cartoon Mugler - there is no design in this! I own a few vintage Mugler, and the genius in construction is jaw-dropping, a highly complex dress that wraps impeccably around the torso in curved seams could hang on just one little hook. Sorry to say, this shows a stylist should not fill the high-heeled shoes of a legendary designer!

I agree.

This show is a publicity gimmick gone wrong.

The attitude of the model in this day in age could not pull of that sort of voluptuous model of the 90s. Lady Gaga overworked it that it was hard to pay any sort of attention of the garments. Even the garments were so...half baked.

Horrible collection. I plan on forgetting this collection ever existed....

Good or not, this show is all over the news. CNN just showed an interview they did with Gaga and Nicola after the show.

Morale of the story...if you want media attention, book the Gaga.

PARIS, March 2, 2011

By Nicole Phelps

With the Twitterverse buzzing that Lady Gaga would perform or at the very least walk in her pal Nicola Formichetti's Mugler womenswear debut tonight, extra barriers were set up outside the Gymnase Japy in the 11th arrondissement. But while there were more hangers-on than usual, it wasn't quite the mob scene people were predicting during the long day of fashion shows leading up to the most anticipated collection of the Paris season.

Gaga may be famous for being late, but this particular extravaganza got started without much delay. There was barely enough time to take in the set (an elevated runway lined with wooden arches built to resemble a grand cathedral nave)—let alone read the extensive show notes, which detailed Formichetti's many collaborators, including designer Sébastien Peigné, late of Balenciaga—before the lights dimmed and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem vamped her way down the catwalk, clutching at the church columns. Her outfit: a black pantsuit with the exaggerated, peaked shoulders that design superstar Thierry Mugler made famous in the eighties, accompanied here by a pair of positively towering platform stilettos.

There was another pantsuit in radzimir and a trench in patent; at least that's what they looked like—atmospherics being the order of the night, the stage wasn't well enough lit to know for sure. And then, 11 tailored looks into the show, Gaga emerged from behind the photographer's pit in molded black bra, sheer bodysuit, and long black hobble skirt. She sported platinum-blond extensions underneath a triangle hat, and she was smoking—in both the literal and figurative senses. In fact, Gaga had better balance on her platform wedges than many of the professional models did on their own precarious heels.

The pop icon came back later for another round all in white—corset, bodysuit, long skirt, and a stole that she flicked and twirled like a whip. In between, her supporting cast appeared in see-through knits and latex pants, furs with the Mugler shoulders, body-stocking dresses with sheer insets on the torso, and pieces of wearable sculpture by Rein Vollenga. Dubbed "post-human android-goddess" in the show notes, the latter sometimes looked not unlike a football player's pads. It all came out at warp speed to Gaga's "Born This Way"—and, like we said, the lighting wasn't great—but it didn't blow you away, either in its affinities to Thierry Mugler's originals or with its future vision.

The collective vibe as Gaga's magic spell dispersed and the crowd shuffled into the night was one of bemused disappointment. Backstage, though, was another story. There, Formichetti was surrounded by the kind of clamoring mosh pit you're more likely to associate with his collaborator. "Fun is making a comeback," he said. "Mugler was a fashion god for me. It was more than fashion, though, it was entertainment." In that regard—and it's not one you can dismiss easily in our wired world—Formichetti and co. nailed it. But will Gaga be available next season? Maybe so. Formichetti also informed us that his biggest fan has already "bought the entire collection in every color."

^ Although Derek Blasberg tweeted
Please note @LadyGaga's finale caused Anna Wintour to smile, an event I haven't seen since Lee McQueen's They Shoot Horses show in Oct 2003
, this Style.com review doesn't show that this collection was much of a success and shows no admiration for the clothes themselves. I wonder if the label will witness a 'Balmain-ia' like success. Only time will tell!

That said, I'd wear many of the fur jackets and striped turtlenecks... The tailored pencil skirt cut from the front and back is quite sexy - something Carine would be wearing for sure!

One of the best shows I've seen in my life. Everything was beyond perfect from the soundtrack, models and runway to the clothes.
It was so intense :woot: Reminds me a lot of McQueen to be honest, but still... soooo amazing!!!

the CLAWS are out on the fashion spot, per usual:smile: You guys have so many zingers in this thread I literally read all the comments, special props to "Magagaler" X) and
"comparing thierry mugler to this schlock is like comparing rick owens to hot topic"

I watched the livestream, and the PURE energy from this show was off the charts. I do however have to agree with most by saying it was a bit off, there were wayyyy too many pillars on the stage, pity the poor editors, lol. Who could See anything?
Very few of the models brought it, aside from the black girls as someone else stated earlier. The shoes were soooo unnecessary. The show hinted at Mugler, but as far as the designs, none of it was special enough. It was almost like watching a student show with a Mugler theme. Should I hurt anyone's feelings by suggesting what Theyskens would do at a Mugler show? Snark aside, won't we ALL be watching next season?

Lady Gaga Bought the Entire Mugler Collection

Her dramatic runway walk-smoke-hump culminated in an even more dramatic purchase: We are told the diva bought the entire fall 2011 Mugler collection, her stylist Nicola Formichetti's debut women's line for the house. Well, that ought to get her through about a day and a half of dressing herself.

^yeah im sure she will pay for those clothes she'll be wearing out in public

I don't get this "energy" that's being talked about, all I saw was a series of young girls who looked like they'd gone crazy with a credit card in a gothic outfitters - god bless them, some of them could barely walk - while Lady Gaga started out by hanging around the catwalk doing an Amy Winehouse impression.

When it comes to editorial coverage, the pieces will probably look much better - but somewhere out there, a real Mugler woman is beginning to consider where she can most forcefully place the sharp tip of her stiletto heel.

Yowza, spot on! B)

Lady Gaga buying Formichetti's collection is probably a sad attempt to try and resemble Isabella Blow buying McQueen's collection.

it's fashion shows like this that really make me abhor aspects of the blogosphere. seriously, why do so many feel the need to bash new designers fresh out of the gate at new houses? there exists nothing in this collection that so offends the legacy of thierry mugler that it warrants such outrage and backbiting. most of the pieces in this collection could walk right off the runway -- and, with the appropriate undergarments -- and walk directly into a boutique and onto a very fashionable woman's back. but for a direct archival collection, i'm not sure what people expected.

theatrics aside, i do believe there's an appetite for this type of dressing again and for his debut collection, he pretty much hit the nail on the head. between the buzz, the accessories, and the sales, i believe he's set himself up for a pretty good run at this house.

Yeah, because everyone who buys a whole collection copies Isabella Blow.

this is sad as Mugler is such a legend... one of the great theatrical, technically-skilled saints the fashion world will ever see. he never needed such hype; his work was the statement and show all on it's own. this whole spectacle is a real shame... if Gaga and Formichetti had souls at all, they'd stop reducing the grand legacy of artists like McQueen and Mugler to nothing but insipid gimmicks.
Absolutely the truth. I love how you put to words exactly how I've felt about Gaga and Formichetti and their bastardization of Mugler and, especially, McQueen. They've turned these two fashion greats into nothing more than silly and soulless theatrics.

Everyone who thinks they know anything about fashion have learned what little they really do know from Gaga. It makes me sick. Those who are tattooing McQueen armadillo shoes on their wrist probably wouldn't even have the slightest idea what "Eshu" means. Just as likely, they would wonder what gibberish you were speaking if you were to mention the "Chimera" gown...

What a shame. This is literally no better than the Lohan at Ungaro fiasco, and I can only hope that this marriage lasts half as long (although I can't help but foresee this partnership lasting quite a bit longer).
