Tips on Bag Cleaning and Maintenance

there was this cleaner called DIDI 7 in the market before-- used to see it on all those darned infomercials then it just disappeared. maybe you can still find it in hardware stores. i used that to clean my white bag and it cleaned it right away. but too much rubbing of that stuff can also cause the color to fade off or discolor. so use that stuff sparingly. i used that on thicker leathers (pebbled) but nver on the thin leathers.
i dont really know how else to clean a penmark. especially if its on a white or cream surface. too much rubbing for sure will cause the color around the mark to become uneven.
i betcha if some chemical company found a solution for penmark problems, theyd be hella rich :bounce

regarding that jelly bag penmark, did you try soap and water?
if its really that stubborn, try going to your neighborhood hardware store and ask for stain remover.. they might be abrasive stuff (like some white cream that just stinks big time) but it just might do the trick. (ask if they have something similar to didi 7).

^ Aw, I couldn't get it out, so I just eventually gave it away.

='( I got eyeliner inside my Louis Vuitton purse... It's suede. How do I get it off?

How to clean vintage Gucci handbag?

Hello,

I recently purchased this vintage Gucci bag. The exterior is very clean and there are no signs of major wear but the interior has showed signs of aging as you can see from the pictures. What is a good way of cleaning the bag interior and exterior without damaging it. The bag also has a weird smell, not a particularly bad, but weird. How could I "freshen" it up? Would Febreze work?

Thanks ahead of time!

hi...i just got a almost brand new LV croissant bag! its gorgeous and the leather is just barely darkening...i was wondering if i could put anything on the strap to keep it from getting uneven or dark water spots or anything. and has anyone uses leather moisturizer on their LV's before? (the leather parts of course) thanks! i love you guys and gals!

I'm not holding my breath, but is there anything you can do about a water stain on a leather handbag???????

^ You could try a natural cleaner like beeswax, a leather lotion or leather cleansing wipes with lanolin. Just received my appleguard products from leatherstuff.com. It costs a ton to ship to the Uk but I didn't want to risk any other brand. So far I've tested the Leather Care Lotion on both my Paddington and Balenciaga and it doesn't leave a mark. Waiting for the rain and stain spray to dry....

i don't know what to use on my louis vuitton's to clean the leather...but it know what NOT to recomend using... Wlison's leather cleaner lotion. my trouville has orange colored handles:shock:

Apple Guard

Hi, can anyone tell me about Apple Gurad? I have a new Louis Vuitton bag. The leather is very light, no where close to patina. I am afreaid to use it because of the strap. It is a very wide large strap, Croissant GM. If I were to apply the apple guard to it now, would it darken the leather and protect it safely? If so, where can I buy the apple gueard? Thanks!

good question...i just got a croissant pm and have been super paranoid about taking it out, because i want an even patina.....if anyone knows about apple guard from experience, i'd like to know too!

I am actually going to go to LV today and ask. I am impatient and really want to use my bag. I normally let it sit in the sun to let it tan or turn patina. I want to use it for the fall though so I do not have the time to do so.

Well, I did not have any luck at Louis Vuitton. She looked at me like I was crazy when I said Apple Gurad. That is the name isn't it? I use saddle soap to clena an older LV bag that I have. I would not use it on new leather though. Even on the tanned leather I could tell where I put it. I am going to call the dowtown LV boutique tomorrow, hopefully I will have an answer then.

i think its called " apple guard" check out mypoupette.com, she mentions it on there. i have used a leather lotion on mine and it doesn't make any marks or anything, blends right in...but i think apple guard protects against water stains and stuff....although i may be wrong. i dont have an LV store anywhere near where i live, so i cant go into one and ask...i'd have to call. if you do find out, please post it. im sure there's more than the two of us who'd like to know

Having received many emails on how to clean and maintain Louis Vuitton items, I thought I would address this issue, here!
Let me start by saying to clean or not to clean is a personal decision. Angie states in her Guide that she lets her bags "have a life of their own," but then she lives in Sunny California, where it never (or hardly ever) rains and she is super careful with her bags. I, too, let my bags have a life of their own for many years. What happened? Why did I change my mind?

I hate water spots. Water spots on LV leather grate on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard! I started asking around, making some phone calls and emailing people. Louis Vuitton's staff graciously fielded my questions, in a manner befitting a politician. The only direct answer I got was to wipe Monogram/Damier canvas with a clean, damp cloth.

They politely hedged on my leather cleaning questions, which is all they can do. They cannot recommended cleaning the leather at home, since that might require recommending products. Once they start recommending products, then there is the potential of angry customers returning with stories of how something went wrong when they followed LV's advice. So, I don't blame Louis Vuitton a bit. Now what?

I have written about my personal care and cleaning of Monogram products only. I have not treated any other types of LV bags, but I am confident that my methods will work on Damier canvas, as well. I am not sure about Damier's dark brown leather.

The products I use are the Apple Garde brand found at http://www.leatherstuff.com. This brand was recommended to me by one of Poupette's Recommended Sellers. I purchased the Leather Conditioner and Rain Repellent Spray. There is also an All-in-One Conditioner which I hear is very good. Now, I am not paid to endorse Apple Garde nor do I guarantee results. I just personally like the stuff.

If you decide to use these goods, test the Leather Conditioner on an inconspicuous area first. Do not start this process if you feel rushed. If you are satisfied with your test area, then FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTER. Don't apply the liquid directly onto the leather. Use a clean cloth. When I use the Leather Conditioner, I apply it to the monogram canvas too, even though it is not really necessary. I think it helps keep the canvas supple in areas that tend to crack as the bag ages--for example, both sides of the zipper on a Speedy. Let the bag dry according to the product's instructions. Then buff it with another clean cloth.

If you decide to use the Rain Repellent, do so only after conditioning the bag. I spray in steady sweeping motions, so one area does not get more saturated than another. If sprayed too steadily in one area, it will stain! I don't trust myself on this step because I'm too heavy-handed. So I have to cheat!! I put my fist inside the bag, holding it at arm's length. In the other hand, I hold the spray, not pointing straight out, but at a slight upward angle. I sweep the bag through the spray while simultaneously twirling it for even coverage. I put on spray perfume in the same manner—spray the mist and then walk through it.

I also treat drawstrings and my Pochette's strap. I only treat the smooth side of the drawstring. I have treated all of my LV bags and small pieces. The leather has not changed color because of it. I have noticed that my 1983 Noé is not aging as rapidly.

Another tip to help protect your leather is during storage, undo all buckles and Noé straps, etc. This helps prevent buckle marks. When not in use, store your bags in dust covers or pillow cases. Plastic storage cases or dry cleaning bags are anathema to your bags. I no longer store my Speedys flat. Seems the canvas has a "memory" for creases. I stuff all of my bags with towels and my husband's old t-shirts.

Feel free to post your questions or comments on Poupette's Bulletin Board! I look forward to hearing from you!

treating and feeding new bags!

hi there, i am expected to recieve my new purchase on tuesday, a MJ stam bag:D and admittedly, this is the most expensive bag on my bag repetoire:blush: . im a little anxious to know if i need to treat it with anything when i get it. i have two LV's which i use leather lotion on and am planning to get some of that apple gurad soon to waterproof them...but i was wondering if there is anything anyone would suggest doing to this bag, once i get it, to protect it...it is a lot of money, and i really want to treat it like a treasure....so any sort of advice anyone can give me, or if its okay to just take it and go...are there any MJ bag owners out there that can give me any care advice? anything would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations on your new purchase. Enjoy the bag. I own this bag and never treated it and it still looks like the day I purchased it. Post photo's when you receive your bag.

oh i definately plan too! i wanted this bag SOOOOO bad and i didn't think i was going to be able to get it and then a twist of luck for me and i ordered one in taupe right before they sold out... and so you wouldn't use any waterproofer or anything? im really super excited! but i was a little shocked that i couldn't find more stuff online about this bag...i tried googling it, to tie over my anxiousness in the wait to get it...and i couldn't find much at all...
