Ive definately seen this trend popping up on the streets recently.
although its quite frightening to see for the first time, its actually quite genius too. definately reflects the mood of a lot of young people.

Definately also a bit scary.. I guess it's the perfect outfit if your planning a gass attack, robbing a bank..

When you say it reflects the mood of a lot of young people today Acid.. what do you mean exactly.. soem sort of statement ?

The item looks like something that Garth Pugh would think of.. just slightly less cartoonish and dark..

.

i think that a lot of young people feel like they live in volatile times, especially with the threat of terrorism, rise in gun and knife crimes amongst young people etc... i think that a lot of people want to create a barrier between themselves and other people.

how can total anonymity in clothing reflect the current mood of young people?

argh frightening. thankfully i haven't seen anything like that where I live...

I think that the 'cocoon' trend was attributed to this feeling as well..but where as 'cocooning' yourself is rather cosy.. forget sharp tailoring and holding in your gut if you have one.. this strikes me as being different, a more negative take on that feeling..

it's almost an anti-individualism...making yourself a non-canvas..? A paradox.. a statement about rejection of the styled exterior..but as the same time (inadvertently?) one that looses humanity.. if that makes any sense at all.. I'm just babbling..

As for the barrier part.. that's paradoxical as well is it not.. when we have people spending hours a day upkeeping their Facebook etc..

Well fashion is in fashion , this could be argued as a reaction against branding logo and individual style.

Hm, I can't see how this could help young people to feel better. Are we not longer willing to show ourselves in public? or just another cry for attention?

Oh, that second picture reminds me very much of a gas mask. I think I like it. ha ha.

I haven't seen this trend, but I have had an idea about finding a ski mask in a nice color (i.e. not black, not bankrobber :ninja: ) and some large pink ski goggles and wearing those on the street. But that is because it gets damn cold around here, not so much because of my feelings toward society... ;)

I'm not sure how far could this take off. wasn't the UK even implementing an anti-hoodie policy for certain areas a few years back?. I remember Kit posted an article about it.. not sure if it was the UK anymore but regardless of the trend purpose, I think there is a danger for everyone in dressing like this.. I might fear kidnappers but I certainly wouldn't like to be mistaken for one of them.

having said that.. I do appreciate the idea from a fashion point of view.. :meow:

I think the former. I can't remember the name but it's a "phenomena" that cropped up in Japan where young people just lock themselves away in their rooms. It reminds me of that. I personally can't say I've seen it where I live , I think youth moves towards a more sort of tribal approach to dressing intimidation etc.

Were i live .. this trend popped up a few years back .. a street wear brand called bear started to sell these .. but with your £90 price tag the adverage teen couldnt afford it .. so it wasnt long before the markets were flooded with copys in every imaginable prints and colour .. camo etc... some scarily enough even had hidden pockets for guns n knifes inside them.

You woudl see gangs of 40 plus kids all in these matching hoodies .. this was the one trend were individuality was no issue .. as long as you could hide your face.. the idea of hiding away seemed very popular .. ideal to hide your identity when comiting crime.

Hoodies are not really aloud in alot of places in britain with hoods up .. but with hoods down not a problem ... these have a zip down the front of them .. so you can zip it inot to .. almost like a parka hood ... so the hoodie rules is no problem as its tecnically not a hoodie.

Some of the newer oens even have a mouth piece on them .. they look almost exsactly like a gas mask

I even saw some kid around by myn were the mouth piece had a voice changer in it

I think these is some what a fashion statement between kid gangs/ those who like to think they are in gangs.. those who comit crimes and those who want people to think they are.

This trend around by yn is entirily one for the lads .. i have yet to see any girl in one of these .. is that a nationwide thing ??

On a slightly funnier note though .. all the mums around by myn love them .. gets the kids in a waterproof warm dry sensible jacket for once haha  not the look they wanna go for im sure haha

I've seen a lot of ski masks, kitted caps that cover the face on the streets of san fran lately, mostly b/c of the cold I assume... always in colors or ivory, not black, to avoid the criminal look. I havent seen any gas mask looks, thats more than a bit frightening to imagine seeing walking down the streets. I would think that lots of people would be calling the neighborhood watch if there were. It would bring much attention rather than anonymity to the wearer.
