UK Elle February 2016 : Kylie Jenner by Jan Welters

I know I'm sounding like a broken record, I'm even getting bored of myself but again: WHY!?

Just got my digital copy, and the cover story starts with:

"Meet Kylie Jenner and Lucky Blue Smith, the Insta-stars of a powerful new brand of celebrity culture. She is one of the most influential 18-year-olds on the planet, he's the most sought-after male model in decades. With 72 million combined online followers (and counting), both are regularly mobbed on the street by obsessed fans, have staggeringly profitable careers, and are in demand from all of the biggest brands..."

So, the answer is pretty self–explanatory: in today's digital era everything is about numbers and social influence. Sex have been selling for almost 150 years, nowadays it's # & @.

To me, numbers like that are a bit like counting grains of sand on a beach. If you stop to consider it, it's impressive on one level, yet so fleeting and insignificant on another.

In today's digital era, whatever a magazine writes about a cover star can be rendered out of date before it even hits the stands, especially in the case of people who can ruin their 'careers' in an afternoon with a hasty post.

The still photos vs. the videos are like night and day... she doesn't look "fresh" at all in motion.

Lmao!!!!

What I take issue with is the overestimation of their worth in that quote. Kylie Jenner is in demand from all of the biggest brands? Since when? I mean, show me the brands waiting eagerly to book a 18yr old who looks like some second rate 'Real Housewife'! Even Lucky Blue's 'demand' claim could be taken with a grain of salt - he hasn't had a proper blue chip campaign to date.

Whilst I'm not particularly a fan, would we not called a Tom Ford campaign 'blue chip'?

nice editorial

shame about kylie, i'd never purchase something with her in/or on it

This issue also has 'Closet Confidential' with Rosemary Ferguson, and a 5 pg article about a girl who visits a psychic. It's so long, I'm going to stop right now and read it - although I'm currently receiving a message from the future telling me I'm never buying Elle again after the March issue. Oh, someone's partner died, and they turned to a medium for comfort.

There's a piece about being a feminist and still watching p*rn, which is basically a short list of places online where you can go and be entertained (or bored) by 'empowering erotic content'.

Kylie Jenner doesn't really have much to bring to any interview. She's only a teenager, and the real fascination lies in how she's moving to the fore as part of the Kardashian empire, rather than in her personality. Even when it comes to her looks, people are more concerned with what's plastic and new, than the attributes she was born with. So even if she's profiting handsomely from her current lifestyle, there's no shaking off the sense that she's a pawn in a much bigger game, a shiny new 'product' that's been rushed to market but left rather unfinished on the inside.

The March issue is advertised as being on sale on 28 January. Three weeks away.

The beauty section contains a range of bad backstage looks - not deliberately, but it's featuring the buzz cut, micro-fringes and chopped layers - and a staff editor's recommendation to try blue-coloured products.

Lucky Blue's cover are even worse than Kylie's. How old is he actually? It almost feels wrong to see him featured like this, without his shirt on, on a cover.
