Une Fille Un Style - Paris Vogue

Thanks everyone for all your kind words!:flower:

I have a translation for MariaCarla Boscono's feature, 'coz sometimes it's nice to know what the hell they're going on about.

VIVA MARIACARLA. Moonlike face, fragile sharp, intense expressionism, sparkling 1,77m, Mariacarla, the Roman, has a little something of Giulietta Masina, the most emotional neorealism heroine. Physically made for cinema, she would have probably puzzled Fellini. She inspires to Fashion a Today Strada.

UNE FILLE UN STYLE. Mariacarla Boscono. She masters extravagance with grace, prefers dresses that tell a story, and dresses up as if she was in a fairy tale. Fashion heroine and full of imagination, Mariacarla makes her life very beautiful.

ONE GIRL. Mariacarla is a girl from Rome, who loves cooking for a lot of people. She was first spotted by Karl Lagerfeld, who requested her for Fendi. She started her supermodel career with an exclusive contract of three years with Comme des Garçons. Short hair, pale face, black eyes: the fashion, in a conceptual way. “That was my first job. Of fashion, I just knew Versace, Claudia Schiffer... it has been a shock and a great education. They taught me another way of creativity.” Then, she did many campaigns for such as Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace, shows, shootings. “At that moment, I had flight once a day.” She is obstinate, perfectionist, and lives this intensity as a chance: “I wanted to learn from everyone, receive the maximum and give the maximum. We have one life to live!” Today, she is inscribed to the Lee Strasberg dramatic art lesson in New York.

ONE STYLE. “Hippy style, for its concept of freedom. Not for its look. Bohemian, for the colours of travel. Eclectic, but never looking like trash.” She wears fur, vinyl, wears a robe du soir for breakfast, and has dinner wearing a country Vietnamese skirt. Her allure is always a surprise. She knows the secret of a rich and very personal extravagance. Because her style is a protection, too. Mariacarla hides her shyness behind this beautiful eccentricity, which allows her to push her boundaries ahead. Dressing herself, she invents a bit of herself, too.

INSPIRATIONS. Her mother, “a fabulous & chic woman.” pushed her to cultivate her own identity not to look like everyone. “When I was a kid, I always saw her finding the perfect allure. Then, it was normal to me to find my own style. She taught me not to dress and live as the others do.” She quotes, too, the fashion world which allows her to free her personality, and be confident.

OBSESSION. Vintage dresses. She buys some and takes some in her mother’s dressing. Mariacarla’s dresses are a bit crazy and tell a story. Summer or winter, seasons do not matter. She just adds a sweat or a pair of tights. Lines from the thirties or cuts from the sixties, she makes forget the notion of time with a pair of Alexander McQueen platform-shoes or a pair of black vinyl leggings. She is never retro.

FAVOURITE. “My mom’s blue dress, it has little straps. It is from the seventies. I love it. I wear it in evening with a jewel, barefoot on the beach, under a fur by a snowy day in New York.”

SECURITY. A long black and yellow Sonia Rykiel dress. “I feel so comfortable in it. It is like I am in a blanket.”

FIDELITY. The glamorous and theatrical dress oh her friend Riccardo Tisci.

ACCESSORIES. “My style is already too much, so I do the real minimum. As she is myopic, she collects glasses. She knows how to wear them by day or night.

TABOO. “These Ugg boots... horrible! Definitely not my style, and moreover everyone has them.”

SHOPPING. She is scared of. Then she finds a solution: she does a unique moment of it, which looks like an adventure. Mariacarla established her network. New York, Los Angeles, or Rome, she has contacts for vintage pieces and they call her every time they have very rare outfit. As instance, Giovanna, the old lady of the Portaportese Market in Roma, keeps for Mariacarla the best things she finds. “I listen to her telling me each story of each dress and I love that. Like this, I already have a memory for each one of them.”

PASSION. Travels. She travelled on the Transsyberien, 3000km in Mongolia and travelled through Vietnam. A passion-evasion which is fundamental in a garde-robe. “In those countries, you do not just buy in a store. You buy to someone. Someone that owned this skirt or this coat for several generations.” From a Vietnamese girl, she chooses the more used skirt. From Mongolia, she takes a little hat and five folk-coats. Her outfits have so many stories to tell.

SHOES. The only thing she does not buy vintage. She has a real passion for Manolo Blahnik. Lanvin, YSL, she can wear everything.

JEWELRY. Only two rings: the anneaux trios ors de Cartier. This is a gift from her boyfriend and a little family ring in platinum and diamonds. On the evening, she can wear a big afghan necklace but she can wear, too, a surfer necklace.

HAIR. Ashy blond at natural. “But I make them darker. My mom’s interpretation: it helps me to feel stronger.”

BEAUTY. Crealine lotion, Avène products, Crème de la Mer for her sensitive skin.

HOME. Ultra minimalist. Lighten white walls, big wooden table and plexi table.

HOT LIST. Manolo Blahnik, is a total addiction! 31West 54th St., New York. Corso Como for the Ricardo Tischi's dress, Corso Como 10, Milan. The parfumerie Santa Maria Novella has just been opened in New York at Lafayette Street, but the original one is magical, 16 villa Scala, Firenze. Don't forget Frederic Boudet, my hairdresser. I'm drinking a glass of redwine while he's doing my hair. A very cool place. Salon Robert Kree, 375 Bleecker Street, New York.

I know no French practically so I will do my best to translate the features with the help of my dictionary. God help us all!

Here's the very rough translation, but enough to give you the gist for Helena Christensen's feature:

UNE FILLE UN STYLE
An obsessional collector, a monomaniac for all things Chinese, the ex- top model decorates her place with items that each have a story behind them (some amusing, others sad or just plain strange) . Masculine or feminine, vintage or label, her style looks as though she just stumbled off the runway. With elegance.

ONE GIRL
A Christmas surprise of the year 1968 (she was born on the 25th December). Helena Christensen is Danish from her father's side and has the dusky, darkish complexion from her Peruvian mother. She oozes with a mix of fire and ice and therefore it's really not surprising that she became a supermodel star. She has something of the sexy and melancholic about her which is also reflected in her style. A photographer, she has also opened Butik, a unique space in her part of West Village in new York. Somewhere between a concept store and a closet of curiosities, it is here that she sells ( among others) the first pieces from "Christensen and Sigersen," the collection which she has just launched with Leif Sigersen. Dresses in linen, skirts and pants all of which are modest. " A feeling of country-style vintage along with a lot of details ( such as pleats, ribbons...), all with a very pure spirit."

ONE STYLE "No style. I like mixing it up." In her wardrobe is a good dose of high-street (TopShop, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitter) and a solid base of faultless designers (Marni, Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Chanel). The idea is never to be literal. " I always need to wear clothes that suit me, even if it means sewing a dress." Then she will wear an evening dress by Calvin Klein with an embroided, vintage top or a big belt with flowers.

DAY Dresses and flat sandals for Summer. And possibly a pair of jeans, but no always.

NIGHT At night she goes for dressing-up.Shorts which have been re-cut into a very mini skirt by Blumarine, embroided Mexican dress or just her black men's suit from Dior Homme by Hedi Slimane.

TROUSERS
She poses in her skin-tight jeans, but consistently opts for the masculine types, as she finds them to be more flattering. Her choices: Helmut Lang or Ann Demeulemeester.

SHOPPING "Nothing for weeks and then one day I'll return home with 10 second-hand dresses. I also like to go to Marc Jacobs, since it is just down from my place, or to John Derian, in East Village, as it shares much of my own aesthetics." Otherwise, she goes down to her shop for the Danish labels Norgard, Camilla Stark, Baum und Pferdgarden or Ivana. " When I buy for Butik, I do so as if I were buying for myself."

ACCESSORIES
She wears a little jewellery, that she finds slightly damaged when going through treasure-troves when she's bargain-hunting. " But I always have the impression that I go over- the- top."

SHOES
Many flats and an obsession this season: for sequins ( she has accumulated three pairs of Marc Jacobs , a pair from Miu Miu and another from Top Shop, all of them sparkling).

TABOO Freaky nails. "But it's just a question of taste."

BAGS (Couldn't make any sense of this bit. )

PARFUMS Grey Flannel, the new edition from Jeffrey Beane; Prada, Marc Jacobs and Eau Noire by Christian Dior.

MAKE-UP
" I like to keep it to a minimum, because whenever I make a mistake I have to take-off the makeup. And that is a pain in the neck." Her preferences: A red mouth and whatever gives the face a healthy glow.

BEAUTY
" I've only just come round to buying my first pot of Creme de la mer. Apart from the price, it is very nice." Dr Perricone's Day Cream, Kiehl's cucumber tonic, C.G Bigelow's Body Cream.

ESSENTIALS
A Konika, a Pentax, a Holga , a Leica (all camera models). Helena is preparing an exhibition for the Groninger Museum in Rotterdam for this forthcoming November.

HOME A loft in West Village which opens up onto a patio of blooming roses. The atmosphere is one of an enchanting second-hand shop. A welcoming and well thought out bric-a-brac, in essence of crisp details. " It's not neccasary to pay too much attention to details, it's the overall look that works."

Mimiko, you seem to have an extensive collection. I don't suppose you have the feature on Sarah Lavoine from 2004? :flower:

I'll just help with the translation .For the paragraph about her 'bags' (Helena Christensen's article), it says :'I always find it strange that people need to get into a fight for a bag'(she means that people get crazy over trendy bags). She's no fashion victim then . She likes what is special and yet simple, like those three purses by Martin Margiela (to which she added a strap in black satin to be able to carry them on her shoulders), and the YSL model with big ties. She's particularly proud of her latest purchase : a velvet schoolbag by Marc by Marc Jacobs.'

I have the Sarah Lavoine article, I'll scan it whenever I can.

Thanks for clearing that up about the Bags (it was doing my head in trying to translate:wacko: ). I hope the rest wasn't too bad!

And that would be wonderful if you can scan the Sarah Lavoine one. I look forward to it! :flower:
