US Harper’s Bazaar September 2021 : Beyoncé by Campbell Addy

Campbell Addy did a good shoot a while ago for WSJ I think? And his shoot for UK Vogue a few months ago was nice. Otherwise he's yet to live up to the hype. This just proves it, but could be worse.

As you've all said, I never see the woman behind some of the most forward-thinking and timeless pop music, and yes she is a visual artist as well, in her editorial work. It's like she puts a lot more effort into photographs and moving image directly tied to her album covers and music videos because she views fashion as a bit menial? IDK...why start a leisurewear brand then (and let's not forget House of Dereon as well)? Well, we all know the answer to that one :innocent:

BTW why did the set designer bring back that wooden log in a studio thing from like 2006/2007? I remember it was in an ANTM winners shoot with Dani Evans and then Michael Thompson also did a similar set up with Cate Blanchett in W and Cassie etc. in Allure .

^I can't get that rotten log out of my mind either, so random and out of place...however that's the better cover, the bad retouching/makeup/lighting combo notwithstanding.

That's my problem with it as well.
Very often it's the only prop in the set design, and I just don't get it.

Btw, ANTM 6 was the best cycle ever if only for 'I AMMMM the undiscovered supermodel' LOL

Beyonce's US Vogue's April 2009 cover and accompanying feature by Mario Testino stays winning! And I'm convinced it will be remain to be the best she's ever looked on the pages of a fashion magazine, because this is an embarrassment. Yet ANOTHER non-event of a cover under Nasr.

That about sums it up. Every time I open a Beyoncé cover thread, I have the US Vogue April 2009 cover in mind with my fingers crossed, which means I'm even more disappointed when the results end up being like...this.

Beyoncé's always been very vanilla to me, but there's no doubt she's a beautiful woman. Testino really captured her perfectly for that April 2009 cover. This just feels....messy. And I blame the photographer for a lot of that, but also the obvious tussle that happened behind the scenes to get as much Ivy Park gear as possible into each shot.

I forgot about that Vogue by Testino in 2009. So for me that and The Gentlewoman will be her best cover/editorials and the W by Demarchelier too.

In general i don’t like Beyonce, some songs yes but her OBVIOUS desire to be a fashion queen and control everything behind that “i don’t do nothing” mask, it’s something i just can’t.

Gotta love

“My name is Jade, the Ace of Spades
Furonda, my dear
I know your skin is bumpy
But my skin is flawless
And you look really lumpy”

LOL

Will always love Bey but in the interview she mentioned she discovered CBD on her last tour

One couldn’t help but wonder if the team behind the making of these covers and editorial was under the influence of CBD as well.~

I saw Beyoncé live once many many years ago (her first solo tour) and I thought she was a goddess. truly.

but as of late (couple of years now), the whole Diva thing got a bit out of hand IMO even if I praise the whole empowerment associated to it.
Beyonce is a mogul. no doubt about that.

now the covers: everything was set for perfection but the result… her expressions on the covers and most of the shots instead of looking commanding and fierce (well…) make her look austere and severe.
the styling is a bit OTT but I don’t actually mind.

I love the pictures with the horse because it seems to me these are the ones she’s not trying that hard.

and it’s a shame because she’s a beautiful woman. maybe in the newsstands it’ll look better and if so, might grab a copy.

That styling is really questionable… Those brown boots with the Bottega fur?
The Gucci cape over the denim look?

That photo on the floor is great maybe because we finally got something. When I think about Beyonce, it’s about stage, movement, dance, energy…Not those contrived portraits.

What’s the point on having her in bodysuits (aka her stage outfit) to have her being static?

Of them all, I think that would be my favourite image, with the fabric looking like flower petals around her.

Insultingly juvenile and amateur.

One would think in her 20 years of being at the limelight top, she’d demand only the best for her brand. She’s always been on the messy and tacky side, and it was always the Greats that managed to bring the best out of her. Now that they’re banished from fashiondom, and the less of lessers have taken over, her brand is hilariously and childishly cheap. The styling, photography and whatever it is that’s trying to get by as creative direction is on the level of 12yos playing dressup. And this could only ever appeal to 12yos. This would be rejected by Tyra’s ANTM and ModelMayhem in 2007. In 2021, it’s a September coverstory LOL How impossibly low this rag has sunk since the revolutionary vision of Liz and Fabien for Bazaar September 1992.

This can only be Samira trolling.

Can someone direct me please to an iconic Samira shoot? Serious inquiry. From any year. I can't think of one. She was always a name I was familiar with but it always seemed she was more of a freelancer ,somehow, making her way through fashion from one post to another. It seems this is how she got the fashion industry to familiarize her name, and one once people became familiar with the name, they assumed "she must be good" and hired her only to move on after lackluster results. She was never a "big get" stylist like Karl Templer or Alex White. Her biggest success has been building her name, not a brand.

Why did we not appreciate Glenda's "Fabulous At Every Age"? She only done it every issue.

@A.D.C. She is very good at networking. No one says a bad thing about her. She is nice, professional, polite, her assistants love her and she was a former assistant of Grace Coddington who really likes her.

80% of success in this industry is thanks to your network. She pushed it to 99%.

I agree, and I don't doubt she's a lovely person. She certainly came across that way in her introduction video when she was appointed EIC and it made me root for her even though I found the news very underwhelming. Unfortunately, the talent just isn't there.

^ Yup. I wanted to remain open minded because I could see her revamp of Bazaar from an angle where it could work - becoming more diverse, less cheesy and perhaps even a bit more editorial. But nope. The one editorial I like from her tenure is the Annemarieke/Ludivine Poiblanc story with Signe and Amrit. I remember a Saskia and Nobis editorial being OK too but forgettable.

On the B editorial, there are some nice pictures, particularly the ones with the horse. Her body looks insane, of course. Then you get to that monstrosity of that purple cape of...things (tails?) Trash. Very convoluted set ups as well, but with two stylists and two hair stylists on set alone, I'm not sure that's Campbell's fault.

Now that I see it all I actually like all the covers and editorial. Would have wanted more of the fashion we see in her the visuals and album art but at the same time the sportswear brand has to be pushed whichever way.
