US Vogue September 2006 : Kirsten Dunst by Annie Leibovitz

Wow I'm really glad I didn't pick this one up. Teen Vogue is way better, I'm 23 and I'm glad I'm subscribed to that

mini preview of vogue sept 2006 preview review
mini preview of vogue sept 2006 preview review

edit #1: testino shoots natalia. love the pictures artful backgrounds & landscapes. grace coddington's high-style fall & evening looks are great, as she almost always is. natalia is good of course but its her 'stupid' look, when shes like a dummy that is moulded. contrast with august & sept W edits by mert/marcus & mcdean, nativ was far more humanized & sexy & lifelike in W. still this is a strong lead edit, it might be the most all pro in the ish. 8 of 10.

edit #2; lily d , gemma, hilary rhoda shot by meisel. what music are they dancing to? these birds are contorting more than even your usual studio meisel edit. ed enninful edited usually I love his work but this fall/winter lineup looks fussy, overdone, not concise as EE usually is. pg 628 w/gem & lily is a winner howevs, its clearer than the rest. I think its an example of meisel when he isnt giving 100% in us vogue. i think the pieces are good clothes but not put together succinctly enough & the contortions make it less pleasing to the eye. oddly average work from meisel EE & even the girls, altho lily & gemm are fine even when not at their peak. 6.4 of 10.

edit #3/cover. kirsten dunst by liebowitz at versailles. some of your are going to love this. I dont. its a liebowitz vanity fair high production shoot. dunst is simply not a model. her demure personality is dwarfed by these over-produced history set pieces. Yes the backgrounds & the settings are incredible, liebowitz did better work at lanscape & architectural pics here than fashion. I hated her deadly metroopolitan museum french thing 3 years ago with gisele & elson etc & this is only a bit better. remember drew barrymore with the dead animal heads? liebowitz does these egotistical incredibly expensive shoots & its just a vanity fair promo for a movie- sofia's marie antoinette in this case. pgs 640, 650 & 656 have incredible perspectives. the setting is extraordinary but dunst cant stand up to them nor the top level designs. the cover is a dud. most of you will find the cover still born and sleepy. I would put lil dunst in a cute bikini somewhere & se her natural charm & appeal. liebowitz uses her as a theatrical prop & despite some amazing compostions this elaborate edit is simply a promo for the movier & another deadly granny dressing drab edit in anna's vogue. and many of you will agree with me even if some of you like the high antiquated concept. 5 of 10, the backgrounds are the only great thing . another high concept production misstep from ego annie l.

edit #4. gemm sasha lily shot by penn. usually penn does no wrong with me but these looks by posnick are so severe that its a bit in your face scary for us vogue. also the girls are pretty invisible. its an interesting challenging edit but one of penn's least satisfying in many years. if you just ignore the headless models its 6 of 10 for penn';s signature costume photography.

edit #5 picasso show at whitney. lichtenstein, johns & furnas are most interesting pieces chosen to contrast pablo. actually the johns comes off best, and of course picasso's seated woman with watch from 1932 is so great it dwarfs the rest, as versailles dwarfed everything in the dunst edit. 6 of 10 ive seen much better art edits in vogue.

edit #6. mr chow by shiela metzner . somwe good architectural images here by metzner. pg 687 best. 679 and 681 also good but halard & boman have shot better architectural for vogue in 2006. its ok though. 6.5 of 10.

edit #7. doutzen by demarchelier. doutz is good & she has that blank cute look that anna loves. this is not an importnat demarchelier edit, its even duller in the studio than meisels. tonne goodman also just phoned the editing in. its only got doutz and that is just good for 6.2 of 10.

edit #8 rachel alexander [?] by arthur elgort. this & the testino are the best in the ish. love the settings [long island?]. love rachel great new face for vogue. more great fall looks from coddington. she & elgort are money in the bank. only this & testino are up to the high level of a great vogue ish & that is the minimum youd expect for sept ish.
8 of 10., lets see rachel MUCH more!!!!

edit #9. whats the brunettes name? seen her & like her. ray meier shoots santisi styles bag edit. the model's really good but ray & elissa have done tons better than this. another oddly average edit in a supposedly most importanish of the year. good girl tho. 5.5 of 10, lets see this cute girl more.

VERDICT: as you may guess I was not blown away by this sept vogue. testino and elgort rocked, both with grace coddington & 2 good girls, nativ & rachel alexander, i think thats her. liebowitz high concept antoinette edit was turgid except for the stunning backgrounds. dunst did not step up to these clothes & Id rather see her in a bikini or being herself. Im not seeing the movie & I bet a lot of you hated this edit too despite the stunning scenery. anna's granny dressing once again with liebowitz' huge ego. = crap. meisel penn & demarchelier also phoned in dull shoots & usually i love penn & the girls in meisel's deserve better than jumping jacks.
for a sept issue this is actually surprisingly dull except for testino & elgort & the girl in the meier/bags edit. ONE THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE both W & bazaar were better this month.

The cover I got barely has any wording on it, only something about Kirsten/Teen Queen and then at the bottom is says something about Fall Extravaganza or something like that. barely any wording on it.

u.s. vogue is such crap. i didnt renew my subscription and im probably never going to buy another issue :ninja: never anything new- the editorials from each month just blur together in my mind.

I was flipping through it yesterday to see the editorials, and I was pleasantly surprised. The Irving Penn/Junya Watanabe editorial was just very eyecatching, and a welcome hard edge to the normally sterile pages of Vogue.

The Kirsten editorial had some beautiful shots within it. Photographically it's nothing amazing, but for instance, the shot of her on the stone steps in that massive Galliano gown spread across it narrowing up to her petite looking shoulders was shot beautifully. Same with the shot in the pink and grey McQueen dress.

I also liked the Natural Selection editorial. It was basically the same premise as every start-of-season Vogue edit, but something about the styling and the look of the girls made it stand out to me.

i really love the bob too-- i thinkshe looks so much better than before.

and i agree teen vogue is dependaby good--- they offer innovative interpretations of styles instead of just regurgitating the trend forecast for their readers

well, it seems like the postmaster have lost my address AGAIN for this month issue, I`m patiently waiting for my copy...

I love the Marie Antoinette photos.

and WoW...........Kate Moss is everywhere

Versace
David Yurman
Burberry
on and on and on.

finally recieved it and the ads were more interesting than the photo or the feature eds themselves. The article on Marie Antonniette was interesting....no further comment on this issue since it wasn`t all that great for the annual FALL issue!! The 2004 and 2005 Sept issues were better than this year!!

Can anyone tell me who the models are in the "Fur For Fashionistas" ad? Is the brunette Coco?

I'm not sure who the models are, but I know Coco isn't one of them  I'll go check again now.

The August issue was $4.50.

I didn't renew last year after subscribing for over twenty years. I like it well enough, just don't agree with their politics. When I want fashion I want fashion, not Hillary Clinton.

Finally the Marie Antoinette HQ's and the articles:

Well, I have to say I'm quite disappointed with this issue. I prefer UK Vogue over US Vogue anytime, but the "754 pages!" in big letters caught my attention. Now I'm pretty sure that half of the 754 pages are advertisings and publicity! Yeah, I was a bit pissed...
Also, IMO the rest of the articles weren't "great" either, just fine.

I don't think I will buy US Vogue again.

i'm not really thrilled with this issue either.....most disappointing was probably that "erotic intelligence-recharge your sex life" article. if i wanted to read such articles, i'd rather buy Elle or Cosmopolitan. when buying Vogue all i want is FASHION, not flimsy articles like that. it wasn't even an in-depth look at the issue, just boring bla bla bla......
