US Vogue - The Cover Archive

^those last two covers are really upsetting for US Vogue History ...

Cher looks like disaster and totally stupid ! and I had no idea Cher was actually "Chér" (which is I guess a mistake of french, right ?)

And Spice Girls on Vogue US ??????? NO idea, they made it ! Was Anna Wintour on Holiday ????? Was she on acid ?

^Yeah I know ... But they were the High School Musical of todays ....
sorry ! not really a band i would see on Vogue US ....

^ I guess they weren't... People used to have fun listening to their music... Well, at least in my memories  I kinda like that cover.
Cher's cover is a disaster! Awful!

I like Cher's cover, Vreeland loved her, and she did around 5 covers, and quite decent ones, plus she did plenty of eds for them with Dick.It was HUGE that they used her on the cover, since she broke the line array of blonde/blue eyed cover girls, and it was successful.

As for the SG, i was never a fan, but they were huge, and they all had connection to fashion with each having an individual style & interest in it from the start, so i see nothing strange about them on the cover. In fact they did a crazy amount of other covers like The Face, and few ELLE cover's.etc Wintour said she likes them because they are "straightforward fun". And lets not forget, she put them on the cover at their height of fame, besides Spears was once on the cover as well.I think when you look back at that year in Vogue cover history, it tells you what was going on, you had the SG, Oprah and Clinton jammed between the supermodel covers, it reflects the culture of that decade imo. So what do we have these days? The same cover girls for the last 15 years, i wish Wintour was more daring and upredictable with cover subjects like she evidently used to be.I'm not saying today's cover girls are not good enough, some are, but i would welcome more variety.Although they have been stepping their game this year.

It was an enjoyable cover at the time - a January issue, and indeed, a bit of fun. It felt light-hearted. Looking bad, it seems insane, but the mood was different then.

Besides tha fact that I really like the Spice Girls cover (I was/am(?) a huge fan) it's quite a significant one because it's Mario Testino's debut as a covder photographer for US Vogue.

Avedon himself may not have liked his own work for 80's Vogue... I can not get enough of his 80's covers
