Vanity Fair July 2009 : Johnny Depp by François-Marie Banier

I love it. The whole spread and photo collage are very Johnny Depp. So summer-y and delicious to look at. I love him and his life. Such ease, effortless charm, and peacefulness.

Bravo VF!

i love him and he´s so gorge, but that cover is no good. i can´t believe they made him look so bad. the inside is so much better.

FANTASTIC!

Thanks for posting Tasha. :flower:

I love his spread, LOVE the fact that he dosent appear to be airbrushed at all.He looks mighty fine, as always. But interesting that Marie Banier shot him, wonder if that was done by Johnny's request.......

johnny spread is way better than the cover (they've tampered too much with it)

he's a goodlooking and charismatic man but why is his hair like that? i mean, a different hairstyle could have been used on him. and the shot is so close-up, which i think, is not that good.

There are some good shots of Johnny there. Ones that would of made a more appealing cover.
Thanks for posting tarsha

Fresh photographer blood! At long last! I don't believe that François-Marie Banier has ever shot anything for VF before, unless I am wrong. I'm sure someone can inform me one way or the other ^_^.

I have to say that the one good thing about the recession is that its opening up space for newer people to take over the slots filled for so long by a very select group. This is especially true for photographers for big magazines. It doesn't have to be Testino / Demarchelier / Liebowitz, new people can come in and do just as well. I think (or hope, rather) that were going to be seeing more photographers who aren't as omnipresent (and probably don't charge 140K a day) shooting for VF.

That said I think this shoot could have been even better if they had also included Christian Bale. I assume this is part of the promotion for Public Enemies so I would not have been averse to a little Bale.

gorgeous. the 4th picture is killing me. (and now after looking at it for a while, it's disturbing me too. if you ignore his arms (as difficult as it may be) and put a blonde hair, you'll have kate moss. exactly the same pout.)
i still think they could have done a much better cover with johnny, but i don't think it's that bad. i also love the picture in which he's kissing the "bride" and the one called "the mad hatter"... someday god will hear my prayers and bruce weber will shoot him for l'uomo vogue.

the cover is really bad..he looks botoxed and overly bronzed. the ed is nice though, wish they had used the last pic as the cover. the ed reminds me of once upon a time in mexico

Johnny Depp! I love him. I like the close-up type cover.

Couldn't agree more.

VF needs to move away from this pseudo-pretentiousness that has been haunting this magazine for a very long time now. This cover, to me, looks perfectly fine, and maybe the reason why some people are adverse or indifferent to it could be because Depp's face is not airbrushed to death. It is still touched-up -I can see- but not in a way as deep and detailed as how these three photographers you have listed chose to pursue stylistically. I, too, hope that we'll get to see new photographers, but also new styles of photos and visual stories rather than only the distinct styles of the regular VF creative team.

That said, I do not know if it was necessary to create a story around Depp's private island in the middle of the Caribbean and fantasy life for a summer issue when so many people will not be able to take even a very modest vacation. That is another story, but then again: this is VF.

Conde Nast is suffering so much right now - shutting down magazines right and left, and maybe Si Newhouse is sick of footing the bill for these overpriced creative people, especially in these upcoming years. We'll see. The issues are getting thinner and thinner, or months do get combined as one issue like Details.

i can't believe the twilight guy has more votes than javier bardem, george clooney, leonardo dicaprio (very nice picture by the way), hugh jackman and, of course, johnny depp... actually i can't believe he has more votes than most men in that list.
