Vanity Fair July 2009 : Johnny Depp by François-Marie Banier

b/c in the books, gorg Edward goes for a plain Jan
judging by this statement, i suppose it's the name of his character in twilight...

Who the hell is Edward Cullen?
Edward Cullen is the male protagonist of the "Twilight" series (RPattz plays him in the movie), and the upcoming generation's Romeo/Mr. Darcy/Heathcliff. I'm amazed that you haven't heard of him yet.

Stalking, tracking and lusting after people half their age is men's raison d'être, so I wouldn't be too hard on any woman who indulges in it as a part-time hobby.
Those men are just as bad as the Twi-Moms.

ROFL  I was kidding...

I mean who could forget this?

I feel bad for the kids who are stuck with Edward in lieu of Heathcliff and Mr. Darcy, its like requesting a bottle of the finest wine and getting served a paper cup with two grapes in it.

Back to the subject at hand, what else is in this issue? Any word on the contents.

Let's face it - Vanity Fair's main audience is proabably not going to go on to the internet and vote on the sexiest male poll.

This was probably posted an a Twilight forum, and all of the twihards are peeing their pants to vote more and more. Therefore this poll is invalid :judge: Because anyone who chooses Edward Cullen over Jakob Dylan's blue eyes is a little bit carayyyyzy

I think soon we'll see cover with Pattinson as most handsome man by VF online voting.

And maybe for September...

Has any subscribers received this yet? I really can't wait to see the Depp pictures, oh and read the final part in the Bernie Madoff soap opera that VF have created (Has he been sentenced yet btw? It's not getting that much coverage in the UK).

Many points I want to talk about after reading these comments:

1- A 45 year old man is not old. That is a middle-aged man. And Johnny Depp looks exceptionally well for a 45 year old. He is either blessed with extremely good anti-aging genes, or all that French wine he drinks really help his skin. Or he has a good surgeon. He look amazing from an aesthetic point of view: tight jawline, still high cheekbones and minimal sagging and wrinkles. Things don't usually look like that when you are 45.

What do you expect people? People do look like that when they are that age, if they are lucky. Plus, he is airbrushed here again. The reason why everyone is so obsessed with vampires of the Twilight books is because they are eternally young and beautiful, sexy and super rich. That is the values teenagers grow up with today. Everyone wants to be as gorgeous, blessed and rich as the Hollywood stars, or how we see them pictured in magazines. Cuts pretty close to the imposed notion of a vampire, eh?

Depp looks fine for his age. Better than fine: great actually. this is VF; I do not want to see tween or teens become the deciding factor of this established and high-brow magazine. Let's appreciate a wrinkle or two, instead of Jessica Simpson and Gisele's beyond retouched covers that said what.... 'nothing!'.

2- The reason why he looks 'old' to some is because all media around the world airbrush celebs so much, that once we see some image that resembles what they really look like in real life, we all think 'wow, all of a sudden he aged like crazy'... I call this situation 'the Brad Pitt effect'.

3- Before Robert, there was Orlando. Before Orlando, there were Backstreet Boys and Hanson. Before them, there was Leo. Before Leo, there was whatshisface some guy that was popular.

And these are the ones that I remember. Beauty is a gift, but do not delude yourself thinking that Robert Pattinson is a phenomenon larger than life. He is an actor who happens to be lucky enough to play the perfect character on whom teenage girls love to stick a certain pseudo-personality, huge expectations and fantasies. That is about it. Hopefully he will have a good career, like Depp or Pitt. That said, I do not see that many girls today going crazy for Scott Baio or the two Coreys anymore. And they were just as big in their time as this guy right here.

A teenage fan-base is the most fickle and forgetful group of the world, because all those girls do grow up eventually.

Plus, the most handsome man, the most beautiful woman??????? Granted, I do have ideas myself about who are the most beautiful celebrities out there, but really... VF's online context and content really leave a lot to be desired for some of their actual readers.

By "majority of women", you must mean twi-moms, aka cougars who have nothing better to do than to stalk, track, and lust after a boy half their age.

Yes Rob Pattinson has a much wider appeal. It's called the Edward Cullen-effect; meaning any girl who stares at him sees Edward Cullen, and fancies that she has a chance with Edward/Rob b/c in the books, gorg Edward goes for a plain Jane.

I remember when it was first announced, people were up in arms over R. Pattinson. Now all they see is Edward Cullen. They're in lust/love/obsession with Edward Cullen, not R. Pattinson. R. Pattinson by himself doesn't nearly have as much appeal.

I agree wish pasha's opinion.

Well At least it's agreed that a huge part of his fanbase, are not teens, like Pasha as insinuating... And It's amazing when women lust for a man it has always to be for some sort of reason, not simply because lust. I can assure from my part, and be sure I'm not alone, I couldn't give a damn about Twilight,Edward, or whatever and I still think the boy is delicious.

I think it's interesting how judgmental people can be when faced with women lusting from a younger man. It's unbelivable, You have GQ covers with women after women of twenty and no one bats an eyelid, and then suddendy everyone woman turns into a cougar if it's the other way around. It makes me sick how women are judged. Well but after I've heard Natalie Portman called a cougar for talking with the same Pattinson, I guess i have to believe in everything...:innocent:

^ Are you joking?

Maybe in Britain he is well-known, but I bet if you ask about this guy to middle-aged women here in the US, few would know the name of a guy who cannot even grow a beard. There are names like Depp, Clooney and Pitt for that role.

His fanbase IS teenage girls, look at the Mtv movie awards. I do not see Twilight being recognized anywhere else as a good movie and him as a great actor with his role in that bore. In fact, every young male actor's main fanbase is almost always teenage girls. Do you really think women all around the world care about a 21 year old guy whose only claim to fame is to model in a romance movie and also do a cameo in Harry Potter the 4th film?

Please.

He's not that well known in Britain actually, Pasha You don't know what you are talking about, so this discussion is useless...There is nothing I can do to make you change your opinion, you had to be on the inside...Well drop on IMDB and ask everyone's age and you will see, he's been on top on starmeter for ages.

I do realize that the discussion about Patinson may look 'off topic' but he is featured on the VF website this very month, so the discussion and the actor are not really unrelated to the issue.

Thank you.

You do not need to change my opinion, my dear. He is 'that handsome kid from that vampire movie' here in the US. He has no name really. That is his fanbase and both of his movies were geared towards teenagers. That is his audience.

I think you like him a little too much as a fan who is not a teen perhaps, so you do not see the big picture. I understand.

Hopefully he will grow out of that phase like Depp, DiCaprio, Pitt, Franco and Bloom, but that is where he is right now.

i had to be on the inside? imdb?? ask for their age?? lol.

Let's go back to the main issue: this VF issue.

i hate to continue the off topicness but pasha you really shouldn't talk about what you don't know. i'm not a teen, i'm a 22 year old law student, and i really don't fit the twihard profile. the only reason i watch twilight is for Robert. the movie was really bad but i love him. you should go to his thread. most of people posting regulary on that thread are over 20. he appeals to everyone, at very age. if you don't like him it's a matter of taste. you make it sound like everyone that likes him is vey stupid. and i think is quite the opposite. he is a very smart and charming young man and attracts a lot of smart grown woman. i'm not going deny that there is a lot of tweentards following him just because of twiligt though

Call me crazy, but I'll take any of the gorgeous "old" guys on a cover any day. Craig, Clooney, Depp, Owen...they all work for me. I think Johnny looks great here, and I actually think he's become more attractive as he's aged. There's something rugged but still kind of borderline pretty about him.

First of all, I was not responding to you. Secondly, I am not saying his fans are foolish or immature, nor that he cannot have any fans who can possess driving licenses. What I am saying is the majority of his fans are that age- 'teen' group and they imagine Edward, and there is nothing wrong with that.

And for all the rest of your post, good for you. I am not going to indulge you or any of his die-hard fans with these types of banal arguments on tfs. I do not know him, neither do you. He is just some actor: everyone who serves your food in NY is one.

The reason why he is number 1 on that lame poll? Because he is the new toy, the new kid on the playground, the new shiny object. That until he gets replaced. I am not going to respond to any of these posts about this guy anymore, so you may feel uninhibited to say whatever you please.
