Vanity Fair July 2009 : Johnny Depp by François-Marie Banier

Very handsome spread, although his Brando-posing bad boy persona has always annoyed me...you have to grow up at some point

the cover is really bad..he looks botoxed and overly bronzed.

Exactly what i was thinking.

I never got the Depp appeal, although I can see he is good looking and a great actor. I'm not surprised Rob is getting more votes than all those men, he is in fact the most handsome man at moment, don't know how his looks will hold up in the long run, but at the moment he has no competition.

i can't believe the twilight guy has more votes than javier bardem, george clooney, leonardo dicaprio (very nice picture by the way), hugh jackman and, of course, johnny depp... actually i can't believe he has more votes than most men in that list.

Well by risking to sound like Mugatu on Zoolander, he is so hot right now.

I don't see what is so special about him still to this day and don't think I ever really will, but this type of celebrity is like a chain reaction among teenage girls. If one says that someone is hot, after a while everyone begins to see that person under a different light due to group mentality. Obviously these men are not ugly, Pattinson included, but beauty exists because we perceive it. He is way too hyped about now. I can list at least 20 men, young and older, who are more handsome and attractive than him, but a lot has to do with popularity and buzz. Not just with who or what is beautiful, but pretty much about any movement in the cultural zeitgeist/pop culture that is controlled by teenagers is mostly generated and galvanized through group mentality. I mean, we used to think boy-bands and teen pop were hot and amazing just because some clever PR guy could reach teens and Mtv!

Back on Depp and the magazine... I think he looks very healthy and up-beat. I cannot see what is so wrong with these pictures, other than being maybe a little boring as a story.

a good choice of cover man, but bad choice of cover photo, Johnny depp looks so old and blank on the cover, as if he's been suffering from some kind of disease for a long time, but when I saw his eds, he came alive, so real and vivid. I especially love the shoot he kissing the pin-up girl on the van, amusing but sensational

VF's online polls just get lamer and lamer...the fact that Robert is leading by such a huge percentage proves that the only people who would be bothered to take the poll are mostly female, and probably teenage. No offense to any Twilight fans, (I like Robert too), but I think this poll does not really reflect the general public's opinion...

Comments about a 45-year-old man looking old... is it a case of bad airbrushing in this one editorial, or the expectation that he'll look eternally youthful, because of his beauty, and the way we remember him from his earlier films?

I was wondering this as well. On the one hand its interesting to see this kind of talk about a man as opposed to a woman, on the other hand its kind of frightening the way we expect celebrities to look a certain way. Johnny Depp is nearly 50 years old, it would be much more unnatural for him to have the smooth skin of a 20 something. I also have never understood why looking older is automatically considered bad. I like the lines and wrinkles, his face has character and wisdom now, there is something more interesting and playful about the way he looks.

Its very amusing in a way. One day everyone is up in arms because there is too much airbrushing that it distorts the fantasy, the next day there isn't enough and it ruins the fantasy.

Oh god 'World's Most Handsome Man', I LOVE it. I complained about the most beautiful woman thing but this I love because its so utterly ridiculous that it makes me cackle. I hope next month's online poll is "World's Cutest Jonas Brother" or maybe "World's Most Hottest Tween Stud" because if were gonna go down that road lets sashay down it.

That's totally wrong and an incredible missconception, a huge part of his "fanbase" if not the majority are grown women, the Rob appeal defies explanation. If what you said was true, we would have Zac Efron topping all this polls for a while, Robert Pattinson has a wider much wider appeal. It's a totally different kind of phenomenon. You have to be on the inside to understand it, GQ is writing a series of artices trying explain and understand his appeal to women, and has been failing miserably, no wonder most people do...

yeah you're right. i just didn't think a vanity fair poll would have the same results as a teen vogue poll, but i guess that teenagers are the main "public" for this type of poll indeed, no matter the actual magazine public... and i agree with Fini, it's very lame.
changing a bit the subject, i can't believe a 45 year old man is considered old. especially a man like johnny, who definitely doesn't look older than his age... well it's just my opinion of course... i think he looks better nowadays than he did when he was in his 20s or 30s. or viggo mortensen for example, he's 50 and never looked so good.

^^I agree but then again i am never shocked by those kind of comments, some people (or should i say our culture?) are just quite obsessed with age, its how they define others, i'm glad i wasn't raised to think like that, and am not one of them.

To me Johnny looks fantastic, not even close to "old" and i dont think he was heavily airbrushed in these shots.

I think airbrushing older people is an art - I think sometimes magazines try to retain some of the wrinkles, but get rid of others, which means you end up with a face with lines in some places, but totally neat in other sections, which ends up looking 'wrong'. The selective improvements eradicate some of the character of the face.

No wonder some covers just go for the 'total airbrush effect' where older people look like they're made out of plastic. It's easier to get rid of every wrinkle, than try to judge which deletion will 'improve' the image while still letting them look human.

By "majority of women", you must mean twi-moms, aka cougars who have nothing better to do than to stalk, track, and lust after a boy half their age.

Yes Rob Pattinson has a much wider appeal. It's called the Edward Cullen-effect; meaning any girl who stares at him sees Edward Cullen, and fancies that she has a chance with Edward/Rob b/c in the books, gorg Edward goes for a plain Jane.

I remember when it was first announced, people were up in arms over R. Pattinson. Now all they see is Edward Cullen. They're in lust/love/obsession with Edward Cullen, not R. Pattinson. R. Pattinson by himself doesn't nearly have as much appeal.

I agree wish pasha's opinion.

Stalking, tracking and lusting after people half their age is men's raison d'être, so I wouldn't be too hard on any woman who indulges in it as a part-time hobby.

I have neither read the books nor seen the film, so for me, Robert Pattinson is merely the newest good-looking young man making it big in the movie industry. There's always another one.

I don't lie the cover. I think the tan is awful and I don't like that he is squinting with his eyes. The ed inside is nice. I especially like the shot of him kissing the imaga of a girl on the siode of a bus.
