On the positive side, over the past year, Vanity Fair has continued to make an effort to feature new people - for them - on the cover, rather than use the same faces over and over again.

On the other hand, some of these covers are far from being images that would enter any Hall of Fame.

This one looks like the start of a private shoot in a hotel room, random curtain included.

What was the makeup artist doing? Her face is shiny in all the wrong places. They should have edited that in post. The styling is tacky.

I feel like there's an attempt being made at Vanity Fair and I have to appreciate that. Does it make me want to buy the magazine? No. But the covers are less horrific than before. They seem to be choosing celebrities who make sense to have on the cover of Vanity Fair (vs other Conde Nast editions).

Bored glamazon doing housework is a formula I like, for a fashion spread. Not sure Selena is selling it, though. She’s looking very…. baby-faced. I admire the attempt to do something different, though. And congrats to her on making it to the Billionaires club.

My favourite Selena Gomez cover remains the April 2017 issue of American Vogue, which is proving hard to beat. However, I don't mind the sight of this. Those brown tones are gorgeous, love the warmth, the lighting, the slight sultry mood, the Prada and the beauty styling. For me, the image itself just needed rotated slightly to the right.

I see a lot of negativity in the comments, that is unneccessary. This is cute, and well done.

Her Vogue covers of the past were super fire, this is VF, so let's consider the source and keep it moving.

The digital copy of the UK edition is showing 108 pages. Maisy Stella is the Vanities person, there's a few short articles about American politics, then it's the Serena section, where the shoot seems to look better as part of an article than it does as disembodied images on the internet. Melinda French Gates talks about giving, along with other women involved in philanthropy.

There's an article about the source of the family fortune of a German industrialist, Klaus-Michael Kuehne, a profile of America's Solicitor General, Elizabeth Prelogar, an article about American Catholicism and its association with celebrity right-wingers, a look back at Saturday Night Live's first episode, and then a piece about Tim Mellon, one of Donald Trump's biggest donors. The back page Proust Questionnaire is Stanley Tucci.

It's not Vanity Fair's fault, but I cannot relate to any of this content. The magazine occupies a strange place in the Conde Nast stable, in that it's an American publication - but it doesn't take the form of an import magazine in the UK. It's printed and appears on the newsstand priced in £, as if it's like UK Vogue or any other home-produced magazine.

When Conde Nast had more money, it did contain more content that spanned the two nations, but that's since been reduced to various supplements and insert sections that are directed to the UK audience.

Speaking of which, in the UK, this issue comes with the Autumn edition of the On Time watch supplement, which has cyclist Sir Mark Cavendish on the cover.

I actually really like the shot of her sitting on the kitchen counter, and makes me wonder if they were trying to do something a little spooky? (October, Halloween) A bit Morticia.
