Versace was not so much concerned with fantasy or practicality as direction. Espousing a bold, precise vision of feminity that centered on skintight pencil or sculptural trapeze shapes, Donatella Versace stuck to the basics, focusing on black and white with splashes of watermelon pink, chartreuse, and clay. Her all-white opening salvo provided a blueprint for the collection that followed, including clean-lined coats with oversized buttons in both bell and chic nurse shapes, as well as a sleeveless up-to-there rompers, skinny cropped high-waisted pants, LBDs, and a one-shouldered gown with accordion pleats. Though she tended to keep her looks uncluttered and individually monochromatic, her prints featuring watercolor-light tulips and lilies provided an especially eye-pleasing exception on lowcut, hourglass cocktail dresses cinched at the waist. It was an arresting a combination of the powerful and the pretty, a feminist stride from one of fashion's biggest sexpots.
