Vogue Germany June 2010 : Claudia Schiffer by Karl Lagerfeld

One of the most distinctively boring issues I've seen in a while. Neither the photography nor Claudia are able to carry this issue. Tedious, from cover to cover.

There is no denying Claudia has a very exceptional, almost refined face, but most of this issue is just one celebratory portrait of the fact after another. Perhaps, in the case of Claudia, that might be fine in one editorial in an issue, but Akrans' and Welters' respective eds in particular rely solely on various angles on Claudia's face, looking mainly mildly bewildered. [insert yawn here] Although Carrozini's ed has its moments (and the last shot is undeniably strong), it has a lot of the same thoughtless adoration of Claudia's beauty as the other eds, and I for one have long since grown tired of the Brigitte Bardot vibe Claudia so often exudes in her work, whether it is intentional or not.

Surprisingly, though, I don't hate Ellen von Unwerth's ed. It's -- quite literally -- the only spot of color here. Although Claudia's presence here is as underwhelming as before, shots #3 and #4 are actually rather gorgeous, and none of the shots are quite as in-your-face as I've come to expect of Unwerth.

But then Lagerfeld, as per usual, decides to pick a theme only to miss the mark completely. But at least he's consistent in that way.

All in all, too much of Claudia, too little fashion. Or in fact anything that might provoke interest.
